Baptizm With The Holy Spirit
Holy Spirit at Salvation
We Need Power
The disciples were transformed into different men after the Holy Spirit came upon them at Pentecost. In John 20:19, they are portrayed as huddled together behind closed doors “for fear of the Jews.” After Pentecost, that same group of men could not be kept behind closed doors (Acts 5:17–20). In fact, in the power of the Holy Spirit the disciples became as bold as lions. Peter and John, before the threats of the Sanhedrin, fearlessly proclaimed, “… Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you more than to God, you judge. For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:19–20). The prayers of the disciples demonstrate that they fully understood the source of their power for ministry: “Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word … and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness” (Acts 4:29–31). Stephen’s ministry was empowered by the Spirit: “And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and signs among the people … And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spoke” (Acts 6:8; Acts 6:10). Paul preached in the Spirit’s power: “And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power …” (1 Cor. 2:4)
