Beware of False Teachers Jude vv. 11-16
Beware of False Teachers Jude vv. 11-16
11 Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion. 12 These are hidden reefs at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, shepherds feeding themselves; waterless clouds, swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up the foam of their own shame; wandering stars, for whom the gloom of utter darkness has been reserved forever. 14 It was also about these that Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord comes with ten thousands of his holy ones, 15 to execute judgment on all and to convict all the ungodly of all their deeds of ungodliness that they have committed in such an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things that ungodly sinners have spoken against him.” 16 These are grumblers, malcontents, following their own sinful desires; they are loud-mouthed boasters, showing favoritism to gain advantage.
Introduction:
Jude, the brother of James and a servant of Jesus Christ, wrote a brief but powerful letter to warn believers about the dangers of false teachers infiltrating the church. In verses 11-16, Jude provides vivid descriptions of these false teachers and their ultimate fate. Let's delve into this passage and explore its contemporary application for our lives today.
11 Woe to them! For they walked in the way of Cain and abandoned themselves for the sake of gain to Balaam’s error and perished in Korah’s rebellion.
1. The way of Cain: Cain's story reminds us of the danger of jealousy, resentment, and pride. False teachers may exhibit these traits, seeking their own agendas rather than God's truth. (Genesis 4:1-16; Proverbs 14:30)
30 A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.
2. The error of Balaam: Balaam was enticed by greed and compromised his integrity for personal gain. Similarly, false teachers may distort the Word of God for financial or selfish motives. (Numbers 22-25; 2 Peter 2:15-16)
15 Forsaking the right way, they have gone astray. They have followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved gain from wrongdoing, 16 but was rebuked for his own transgression; a speechless donkey spoke with human voice and restrained the prophet’s madness.
3. The rebellion of Korah: Korah's rebellion against Moses and Aaron highlights the danger of challenging God-given authority. False teachers may sow seeds of discord and rebellion within the church, causing division and strife. (Numbers 16:1-35; Hebrews 13:17)
17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.
Contemporary Application:
- Beware of teachers who prioritize personal gain over spiritual truth. Stay vigilant against greed, materialism, and the distortion of Scripture for financial profit.
- Guard against jealousy, resentment, and pride in your own heart. Cultivate humility and a willingness to submit to God's authority and guidance.
- Support and uphold godly leaders within the church, respecting their authority and seeking unity rather than division.
1. Hidden reefs: False teachers may seem harmless or even attractive, but they can lead believers astray and cause spiritual shipwreck. (Matthew 7:15-20)
15 “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit. 18 A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit. 19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 20 Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.
2. Clouds without water: Just as clouds without rain bring disappointment, false teachers promise much but deliver little spiritual nourishment or truth. (Colossians 2:8)
14 Like clouds and wind without rain is a man who boasts of a gift he does not give.
8 See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
3. Autumn trees without fruit: These trees may appear alive, but they are barren and devoid of true life and vitality. False teachers lack genuine spiritual fruit and ultimately face spiritual death. (Galatians 5:22-23)
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Contemporary Application:
- Be discerning in your interactions with teachers and leaders within the church. Look beyond outward appearances and evaluate their teachings against the truth of Scripture.
- Seek spiritual nourishment from sources that are rooted in God's Word and produce genuine fruit in the lives of believers.
- Remain steadfast in your faith, anchored in the truth of God's Word, and avoid being swayed by deceptive teachings that lack substance or true spiritual transformation.
1. Enoch's prophecy: Enoch's prophecy serves as a reminder of God's ultimate judgment upon the ungodly and the importance of living in righteousness and obedience. (Genesis 5:21-24; Hebrews 11:5; Revelation 19:11-16)
21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.
5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he should not see death, and he was not found, because God had taken him. Now before he was taken he was commended as having pleased God.
11 Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse! The one sitting on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he judges and makes war. 12 His eyes are like a flame of fire, and on his head are many diadems, and he has a name written that no one knows but himself. 13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and the name by which he is called is The Word of God. 14 And the armies of heaven, arrayed in fine linen, white and pure, were following him on white horses. 15 From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations, and he will rule them with a rod of iron. He will tread the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God the Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has a name written, King of kings and Lord of lords.
2. Characteristics of false teachers: Jude highlights the traits of false teachers, including grumbling, fault-finding, arrogance, and flattery. These individuals are driven by their own selfish desires and seek to manipulate others for personal gain. (Matthew 7:21-23; 2 Timothy 3:1-9; Romans 16:17-18)
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
1 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. 2 For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, 4 treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, 5 having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. 6 For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, 7 always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. 8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. 9 But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.
17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.
Contemporary Application:
- Remember that God is just and will ultimately judge all ungodliness. Live in a manner that honors Him, seeking righteousness and obedience in all areas of life.
- Be wary of individuals who exhibit characteristics of false teachers, such as grumbling, fault-finding, arrogance, and flattery. Test their teachings against the truth of Scripture and avoid being deceived by their manipulative tactics.
- Cultivate humility, integrity, and a genuine love for God and His Word. Seek to honor Him in all that you do and guard against the influence of false teaching in your life and in the church.
Conclusion:
Jude's warning against false teachers remains relevant for believers today. As we study this passage, let's heed Jude's exhortation to remain vigilant, discerning, and steadfast in our faith. May we be rooted in the truth of God's Word, bearing fruit in our lives, and avoiding the deceptive teachings of those who seek to lead us astray.
