1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.
2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
5 A stranger they will not follow, but they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.”
6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
As we begin looking t chapter 10, it is important to note that it is closely tied to chapter 9. As we read it in the context of chapter 9, it becomes very clear what Jesus is talking about. Jesus is comparing the kingdom of God to a sheepfold.
So as we look at our picture, the sheepfold has a wall to protect the sheep right? The wall keeps the sheep from wondering away and getting stolen or attacked by wild animals right? What else do we see in the picture? A doorway right? This is how the shepherd leads them out to pasture to eat right and drink right? So let’s look at how Jesus describes Himself in our passage.
2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
So Jesus first describes Himself as the Good Shepherd
6 This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.
7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
What does our passage say about man?
1 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.
As humanity, we love to take shortcuts, we love to find ways around the rules. We are independent, proud, and arrogant. We also love to deceive ourselves. We want to sit on the throne and call all the shots. Think back to chapter 9. How did the pharisees miss Jesus as the messiah? Did the man born blind struggle to understand that Jesus was the Messiah?
Just like the pharisees named the name of Moses, men today name the name of Jesus but they don’t know Him. Don’t listen to their voices. I have been tempted to stray down wrong paths after men, we have to be careful. I am not saying this to cause fear, perfect love drives out fear. I am saying this to encourage you to devote your life to knowing Jesus. We must know Him, we must know His heart, through His word. All of His Word. There are teachers out there that take us off on different paths. They will take truth found in Jesus’ Word and emphasize it out of proportion. An example is speaking in tongues. The official stance of the Alliance is seek not forbid not.
What hope do we have from our passage?
4 When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice.
