Boaz Takes Action (1-6)

Ruth 4:1 ESV
1 Now Boaz had gone up to the gate and sat down there. And behold, the redeemer, of whom Boaz had spoken, came by. So Boaz said, “Turn aside, friend; sit down here.” And he turned aside and sat down.
1a - BOAZ was at the gate WAITING for the elders of the city
1b - Connected with the closer redeemer
Ruth 4:2 ESV
2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said, “Sit down here.” So they sat down.
2 - Sat down with ten elders of the city
3-6 - The Proposition
Ruth 4:3–4 ESV
3 Then he said to the redeemer, “Naomi, who has come back from the country of Moab, is selling the parcel of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. 4 So I thought I would tell you of it and say, ‘Buy it in the presence of those sitting here and in the presence of the elders of my people.’ If you will redeem it, redeem it. But if you will not, tell me, that I may know, for there is no one besides you to redeem it, and I come after you.” And he said, “I will redeem it.”
3 - Naomi is giving the rights to the land of Elimelech
4a - Boaz: “BUY” > Take the rights it if you want them …using the word buy/bought throughout the text is saying the transaction is already approved…however, either the redeemer or Boaz still have to go buy the land from whatever party took it over or bought it from Elimelech when he left during the famine ten years prior.
4b - Redeemer: I will
Ruth 4:5 ESV
5 Then Boaz said, “The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you also acquire Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the dead, in order to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance.”
5 - Boaz: The day you buy it, you also buy Ruth the Moabite
Judges, Ruth (2) The Report of the Court Proceedings (4:3–8)

The Mosaic prescription had the immediate brothers of the deceased in mind, and this is assumed in the application of the custom in Genesis 38 and 2 Sam 14:7. Accordingly, when Boaz challenged the gōʾēl to “establish the name of the deceased,” he was not appealing to the letter of the law but its spirit. Neither man was legally bound by Deut 25:5–10, but this does not eliminate a moral obligation. Boaz was prepared to operate on these grounds. The question is, Was the gōʾēl?

This is kind of like a wager on who is willing to do the most noble thing…the proposition is not according to letter of the law, but according to it’s spirit to preserve the LAND in the family and preserve the NAME of the family.
The first redeemer is willing to preserve the LAND but not the NAME
Boaz is willing toward both and all would agree this is most noble thing and if possible this is what should happen.
Ruth 4:6 ESV
6 Then the redeemer said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.”
6 - Redeemer: NAH
Impairment of his inheritance
Simple cost of caring for Naomi/Ruth
Transfer of inheritance
Ethnic Implications of Moabite

Confirmation & Blessing (7-12)

Ruth 4:7–8 ESV
7 Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging: to confirm a transaction, the one drew off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was the manner of attesting in Israel. 8 So when the redeemer said to Boaz, “Buy it for yourself,” he drew off his sandal.
7-8 - He GAVE his sandal to Boaz and told him to redeem it
The sandal wasn’t just lifted in show it was GIVEN as a receipt…not sure what the other guy is supposed to do. LOL
AAA warranty battery. :)
Ruth 4:9–10 ESV
9 Then Boaz said to the elders and all the people, “You are witnesses this day that I have bought from the hand of Naomi all that belonged to Elimelech and all that belonged to Chilion and to Mahlon. 10 Also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, I have bought to be my wife, to perpetuate the name of the dead in his inheritance, that the name of the dead may not be cut off from among his brothers and from the gate of his native place. You are witnesses this day.”
9-10 - Boaz calls on the witnesses
ILL: looky-loo - all the people (v9)
Naomi and Ruth may be among them at this point... (Ruth 3:18 She replied, “Wait, my daughter, until you learn how the matter turns out, for the man will not rest but will settle the matter today.”)
You are witnesses this day
I have claimed the right to the LAND of Elimelech (& sons)
I have claimed the right to Ruth, the Moabite…that the NAME of Elimelech/Mahlon not be cut off from the GATE of his NATIVE PLACE
You are witnesses this day
Ruth 4:11–12 ESV
11 Then all the people who were at the gate and the elders said, “We are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman, who is coming into your house, like Rachel and Leah, who together built up the house of Israel. May you act worthily in Ephrathah and be renowned in Bethlehem, 12 and may your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah, because of the offspring that the Lord will give you by this young woman.”
11a - Witnesses (Elders & Crowd) confirm
11b-12 - Witnesses bless Boaz & Ruth
THREE-FOLD BLESSING FROM THE CROWD
Make her like Rachel & Leah
Rachel & Leah particularly renowned in Bethlehem which is in the land of Judah (son of Leah) AND is the burial place of Rachel.
Tremendous testimony of acceptance to Ruth
May you be renowned in Bethlehem / Ephrathah
Ephrathah was the region surrounding Bethlehem…Bethlehem was the prominent city of the region.
May your house be like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah!
We don’t have time to fully talk through the story of Judah/Tamar, but the comparison here to Tamar is in remembrance of the background that her husband (who was evil) also died before she could bear children AND through an very unlikely set of circumstances, Perez was born by Judah & Tamar. ...

Kingdom Origin (13-18)

Ruth 4:13 ESV
13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife. And he went in to her, and the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.
My translation… “First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes baby in the baby carriage.” :)
13a - Marriage
13b - Baby
Ruth 4:14–15 ESV
14 Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a redeemer, and may his name be renowned in Israel! 15 He shall be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age, for your daughter-in-law who loves you, who is more to you than seven sons, has given birth to him.”
14-15 - Blessing over Naomi by the women of Bethlehem!
Bless the Lord > who has not left you without a redeemer
May the Lord be renowned
This child shall be...
A restorer of life
A nourisher of your old age
BECAUSE your daughter in law gave birth to him
who loves you (covenant…laying down your life…kind of love)
who is more to you than seven sons (A complete Jewish family)
Ruth 4:16 ESV
16 Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her lap and became his nurse.
16 - Naomi became his nurse …caretaker, (?)… hugged him dearly…accepted him as her grandson…this son HAS NO genetic connection to Naomi and yet what is being portrayed here is that she sees her husband and her sons in this grandson.
Ruth 4:17 ESV
17 And the women of the neighborhood gave him a name, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
17a - The women of the neighborhood named him Obed.
17b - Obed, father of Jesse, father of David
Ruth 4:18–22 ESV
18 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, 19 Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab, 20 Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon, 21 Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed, 22 Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.
18-22 - Generations of Perez:
Perez > Hezron > Ram > Amminadab > Nahshon > Salmon > Boaz > Obed > Jesse > David
GO WITH THIS...
Servant (The name Obed means “one who serves”)
It is a fitting name...He is the son of Boaz and Ruth who both laid aside their own interests to serve Naomi
Ruth clung to Naomi, left her family, her home, her gods to follow the Naomi, to be among her people and to serve the Lord!
Ruth went to the fields to provide for Naomi while she still was mourning
Boaz looked on Ruth respectfully and cared for her and Naomi serving them without motive…he was STUNNED when Ruth came to propose that they be married!
Boaz blessed his workers and his workers blessed him back.
Obed is the child of two servant leaders.
It reminds us of what Jesus instructed his disciples...
Matthew 20:26–28 ESV
26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Let us be those who serve with integrity and humility ...
Romans 12:10 ESV
10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor.
Instead of deferring to puffing ourselves up and protecting our pride, we ought to exalt one another and walk in humility.
Savior (Boaz > David > Jesus)
Boaz saves the line of Elimelech - from being forgotten to renown in Israel
David saves the kingship in Israel from a selfish king Saul to a king after the Lord’s heart
Jesus saves us from being forever separated from our Father in heaven to being eternal secure in His presence
Colossians 1:13–14 ESV
13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
What the book of Ruth comes down to is this:
God is Faithful
In the days when the Judges ruled…while Israel was walking in evil ways, God is faithful
In the days of suffering and despair, God is faithful to those who suffer loss (Naomi)
The children of Israel are those who take the Lord at His word
Genesis 15:5–6 ESV
5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
