Game: tell your best childhood story

Everyone will have a time to share for 5 minutes.
Mine: going on vacations and mission trips.

What topics did we cover before?

January - The heart of the loving Father
March - The favor of One
May - Meeting standards
Have you heard these sentences before:
I will never be able to be like…
I’ll need to do better than…
I’m not as good as…
We are always comparing ourselves so someone who has other things. When, in reality, we are on our own path.
Right away, we want to ask, “who told me that I should do more?” Where is this line that we need to be at, what is the standard?
Standard is different for everyone, so how can we meet it?
Jesus is setting the standard for us and our lives. Us being a son, a friend, a husband, a loving father, a grandfather, a leader, a follower.
Ephesians 4:10–15 NIV
10 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) 11 So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ.
Practice: Write down some character traits or skills that you wish to have. (write a word, or a sentence)
How people chose rabbis? They wanted to be like them. Everything that they are - they wanted to be the same way.
Jesus came up to the disciples and asked them to follow. Jesus chose the disciples, but we still can learn and say “Jesus I want to follow your example”.

Jesus sets an example of what it means to be men:

Son of Man
Jesus was 100% God, 100% man
Coming down from heaven, taking on a form of a human being, suffering and surviving all the pain.
Jesus wanted to live the life that we lived so that he could be the perfect sacrifice.
Son of a worker
Jesus lived a normal life, to a normal family. He worked a normal job. Jesus was humble. Jesus was a builder.
Patient. The opposite of Moses
Obedient Son
Salvation is possible because of Jesus’ obedience
Our security of becoming a child of God is through the actions of Jesus.
Best older brother

What do we want to have? A commitment to something.

Commitment to support
Supporting each other and those that we are in charge of Hebrews 10:24-25
Hebrews 10:24–25 NIV
24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
Commitment to love
Love is a challenge John 13:34-35
John 13:34–35 NIV
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
Commitment to the word
Studying the word John 8:31-32
John 8:31–32 NIV
31 To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. 32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
Commitment to the spiritual discipline
How often do we spend time in God’s presence? Mark 1:35
Mark 1:35 NIV
35 Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.
Commitment to forgive
Jesus on the cross asked forgiveness on behalf of\\ others Luke 23:34
Luke 23:34 NIV
34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
Commitment to be patient
So many rabbis and Pharisees were challenging him, distracting him. And he was still patient and quiet.
Some were interested in finding fault that trying to understand why jesus was doing it.
When Jesus healed, he was patient with people and their story Romans 9:22-23
Romans 9:22–23 NIV
22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction? 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory—
“Jesus is even more patient than we are sinful”
Commitment to protect
John 17:12 NIV
12 While I was with them, I protected them and kept them safe by that name you gave me. None has been lost except the one doomed to destruction so that Scripture would be fulfilled.
Salvation is possible because of what was protected
End note: We were bought, justified, and being sanctified, so that we can call God his father.
