Don’t Be Taken Captive
Don’t Be Taken Captive
There are some who through great sounding words and smooth talking try to gain a following.
For these Colossians the lie was that they lacked something in their spiritual life. They needed something more than Christ.
Legalism - vv. 16-17. Trying to achieve through human effort what only Christ can do.
Mysticism - trying to achieve through special insight or knowledge what is already given to us in Christ Jesus.
Asceticism - trying to achieve greater spiritual insight through extreme self-denial.
There are vain philosophies today that try to usurp the Gospel. Wokeness is one. It seeks to resolve the real problem of racism by human redistribution. It creates new classes of privileged and sinners based on the color of ones skin.
The problem with philosophies is they all start with man and try to work up to God. We have a Savior who is God that became Man while retaining the fullness of Deity!

We are complete (completely filled in Christ).
Complete Salvation (vv 11-12)
Complete Salvation (vv 11-12)
There is no lack in the saving power of the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord who has strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, appointing me to the ministry— one who was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an arrogant man. But I received mercy because I acted out of ignorance in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord overflowed, along with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. This saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance: “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” —and I am the worst of them. But I received mercy for this reason, so that in me, the worst of them, Christ Jesus might demonstrate His extraordinary patience as an example to those who would believe in Him for eternal life. Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
Complete Forgiveness (vv 13-14)
Complete Forgiveness (vv 13-14)
There is nothing that you can add to the forgiveness found in Christ Jesus.
For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall, by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments contained in ordinances, so that in Himself He might make the two into one new man, thus establishing peace, and might reconcile them both in one body to God through the cross, by it having put to death the enmity.
Complete Victory (v 15)
Complete Victory (v 15)
His victory is complete!
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
We don’t come to God through any lower medium. He has won the victory over Satan, sin, and death!
I heard an old, old story, how a Savior came from glory. How He gave His life on Calvary to save a wretch like me. I heard about his groaning of His precious blood’s atoning. Then I repented of my sin and won the victory. Oh victory in Jesus, My Savior forever! He sought me and bought me with His redeeming blood. He loved me ere I knew him and all my love is due him. He plunged me to victory, beneath his cleansing flood!
