Make sure YOU are teaching the truth
“…present yourself to God...”
“…correctly handling the word of truth.”
“Avoid...”
quarrels about words
irreverent babble
Because these kinds of conversations/debates:
“ruin the hearers”
“lead to more and more ungodliness”
“spread like gangrene”
explain gangrene
There are some who are not teaching the truth
Hymenaeus and Philetus
Teaching that there is no future resurrection
HERESY!
Upsetting some people’s faith
“ruining, destroying, overthrowing”
God’s truth has never and will never change!
“swerved from the truth”
“Deviated”
Didn’t change it!
“God’s firm foundation still stands”
The one part of a building that cannot, under any circumstances, move!
“Bearing this seal”
Authenticity, this is, in fact God’s foundation
Seal has 2 parts:
“The Lord knows those who are his”
Probably a quote from Numbers 16:5
True Christians are always Christians
A Christian places his hope and trust in the finished work of Christ
We can be hypocrites and fool other people, but God knows whose heart has been changed by the power of the Holy Spirit and whose profession of faith is real and sincere
“Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.”
The action/lifestyle of one whose heart has been changed
If you confess with your mouth, you better confess with your life
If the truth you are building your faith on lacks one of the parts of this seal of authenticity, you are not building your faith/walk on God’s foundation!
“God knows my heart, so my life/actions don’t really matter”
LIE!
“I’m going to heaven because I’m doing Christian things.”
LIE!
Both parts of the seal are present in an authentic Christian walk
A heart that is truly trusting
A life that is dedicated to holiness unto the Lord
So it turns out that a real Christian has a heart AND a life that is pleasing to God
Are you building your faith on God’s foundation?
Trusting Christ AND living a holy life for His sake
Not just “believing” and not trusting in what I do
Some have SWERVED (DEVIATED) from THE truth, have you?
