Attitude
Body language
Actions
My language/Tone of voice
Today we are going to show and prove that this commandment goes much deeper being obedient to your parents we are going to talk about being obedient to authority with this commandment.
The main thing
Here we cannot get to legalistic when it comes to this commandment and like William talked last week put it in a box and as long as we keep the “letter” of the commandment we are good. It has to go much deeper than that. What is the heart posture behind your thoughts and actions.
Intro:
Statement of proposition
Exodus 20:12 ESV
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
Other texts that support
Ephesians 6:1–3 ESV
1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 2 “Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), 3 “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.”
Colossians 3:20 ESV
20 Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.
Why does this matter?
As we read in Colossians Paul is connecting obedience to parents with honoring them
Children show honor to parents through our actions
This can be outwardly, but also inwardly
Honor is demonstrated in obedience to commands, but it is also seen in a compliant attitude
When we talk about honoring your father and mother what does this mean to you?
Set up a list and columns for honoring and then disrespecting
What is God teaching us by abiding in the fifth commandment? Humility
It’s important to realize that when we are talking about humility, humbleness, actions it has to penetrate deeper than that.
It is a want and a yearning to be obedient and the love that we have in our hearts overflows into our actions that allows us to be obedient to our parents.

Main Point #1: All Authority is Ordained by God

Statement
When people think of authority being God ordained what are some of the biggest thoughts that pop into your head?
Presidents
Kings and Queens
All government leaders
Pastors, Elder, Deacons
But do we think about parent’s authority in the same way that we do the government?
Prove
The command to children to honor their parents is a command that comes with a promise of blessing
Parents are not to provoke their children to wrath.
Ephesians 6:4 ESV
4 Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
Colossians 3:21 ESV
21 Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged.
When it comes to authority we can see the parallels between passages of Scripture like Romans 13:1-7 and Ephesians 6:4
Government Authority: Romans 13:1-7
Ordained by God
Punish evil doers, praise those who do well
maintain the teaching about common grace and the Lordship of Jesus Christ
Parental Authority: Ephesians 6:4
Ordained by God
Parents must bring their children up in the nurture of the Lord
Parents should give their children a lawful calling, so that they may serve their generation

The next time your parents ask you to do something that you really don’t want to do. Think and pray for the heart to be obedient not because you are being forced to, but because of God’s sovereign providence he has put your family and parents in your life. He has ordained your parents to be authoritative figures in your life.
It is not just about being obedient to your parents, but a lot of you have siblings that are looking up to you and watching your actions, language you use.
What is the example going to be for your siblings.
If you don’t have the humility to obey your parents what does that tell God?
Nobody is perfect. As I am talking to you I am also talking to myself.
My wife would tell you that I need to preach to myself when it comes to being obedient in this way.
Your parents are watching, friends are watching, siblings are watching and more importantly God is watching.

Main Point #2: The Family structure is a sphere of authority

Statement
We have seen that God has not left human beings to live as isolated individuals, but has placed them within communities.
Prove
What are the three spheres of authority?
Church
Family
Government
As we have said each sphere ordained separately and uniquely
The family began when God created man “male and female”
Genesis 1:27 ESV
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Here we see the structure of the biblical family:
Man and woman
Genesis 4 God gives children to the first couple
Here we see a line of faith that runs through Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, their descendants. In time the deliverer, Jesus is born and fulfills the promise of Genesis 3:15
Genesis 3:15 ESV
15 I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
What is the promise that Jesus fulfilled?
In both the New and Old Testaments, God calls families, as well as individuals, to the blessings of salvation and to responsibilities in His kingdom.
Scripture is much concerned with raising children in the fear and knowledge of the Lord?
What does a godly household look like? Where does it start and where does it end?
A godly household is one that is saturated with the Word of God
I feel like a lot of the households here will fall under those terms.
Discipling their kids is an utmost importance
The father is teaching his family God’s Word, His doctrines, praying together as a family.
Illustrations:
Just because you come from a God centered, biblical household does not guarantee that you will become a true believer of Christ, but God can and will use that as an opportunity for the Holy Spirit to do it’s thing, but it is not a guarantee.
My family experience growing up in the Roman Catholic Church
Church was not important
My father would never go with us
We checked the boxes like good little Catholic’s but there was no heart to love the Lord

Main Point #3: We are to obey all authorities until……

Statement
As Christians we are to honor all authorities
That means obeying unpleasant laws and rules like speed limits, paying taxes, curfew
We are to do the same in the church when it comes to elders, deacons, pastors etc. All of which are God’s constituted authorities
But with being given the authority there is expectation:
Prove
Parent’s are not to provoke their children to wrath Ephesians 6:4
Parents must bring their children up in the nurture of the Lord
Keep parental authority (being kind without spoiling their children)
Act lovingly to our children
Pray with and for them
Parents should not strike them without cause, be careful that correction does not exceed the fault
But what happens when a parent or any authority figure tells you something or tells you to do something that will prohibit your ability to worship Christ or break one of God’s commandments?
There are many Christians that believe that their faith is on the side of privilege and because of that mindset people are willing to give up their Christian beliefs if it goes against what the authority says.
People hate confrontation and when a group stands up against rulers that is what you get. The focus needs to be that these “higher powers” are designed to carry out God’s will and if they try to prevent people from doing so people are entitled to “obey God rather than men.”
Authorities themselves were ordained by God to carry out his commandments.
It is very clear that their authority does not allow them to restrict or prevent the worship of God’s Church.
Romans 13:1-7 looks at this specifically and we will get into this deeper when we go through this passage in the evening, but I think that it is important to think on and to reflect on man’s chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever. Glorifying God like in John 17:1:
John 17:1 ESV
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you,
Glorifying God is the ultimate act for Christ and should be the ultimate act for us.
Apply or Confront
Application Points:
Be thankful to have parents that love you and have the fear of the Lord that wants you to know Him as well
Show your obedience by your actions, language, body language
Keep in the back of your mind and in your prayer life if you are glorifying God
