Supremacy of Christ

(The joke about men always making the coffee in the morning: The Bible has clearly spoken… He…Brews - Hebrews.
This book is very unique in the Bible as it makes connections from Old to New Covenants.
The author never names himself. The early church believed it to be Paul or a companion of Paul’s. Only God knows for sure who wrote it, but it is to never be disputed as being the Word of God.
The traditional title was “to the Hebrews.” So the audience is to be known as Jewish Christians/believers.
These Jewish people, or some of them, have stepped out of Judaism into Christianity… and now some of them desire to go back… maybe in order to save themselves from persecution by their own countrymen.
Remember, the Christian’s enemy at this time were Romans and Jews. When faced with pain, they are wanting to turn back to safety, or to that which is familiar to them.
There were some strange teachings being circulated during this time and The Judaizers were very influential as well.
What is the writer doing; what is he saying? The writer is going to exhort them to go on to perfection (6:1). He is trying to guide and guard these folks by the Truth. He is going to try to persuade them that Christ is superior over all. Christ is superior over the Old Covenant, over the Law, over angels, over Moses, and other mediators.
Christ’s sacrifice is better than Old testament sacrifices. His work is better that any high priest. He is more powerful than any angelic being… And all things are fulfilled in Him.
In short, the writer is making a strong argument: There is more to be gained in Christ than to be lost in Judaism. There is more to be gained going forward with Christ, than going back… away from Christ.
There is a message for us today. There are believers and unbelievers who need to hear this message today. Christ is Supreme over all and HE is worthy to live for.
Christ is Supreme: He is the Supreme Revelation
Verse 1 - God, Who at various times… and in various ways… spoke to the fathers (patriarchs), by the prophets...
Over the course of 1,800 years… We see the 39 books of the Old Testament… and we see God speaking through these messengers in different and various places/locations.
Various ways - Visions, signs and symbols, parables, written in historical and poetry form, in various literary styles. And we see God’s revelation to be progressive. God reveals more and more along the way.
So, long ago… God spoke and used prophets… and He spoke to our fathers… Now....
Verse 2 - Now, in these last days… He has spoken to us by His Son...
The Jews understood “these last days” to mean the time of Messiah, when He would come… Give His Spirit… Be poured out on their sons and daughters… and so on.
In the past, God used prophets to give divine revelation… But now, the Son of God has come.
God has spoken. God has spoken to you. Not only through prophets… and we will see, through angels… But the Son of God has come to His creation to speak with them in the flesh.
The Living Word, the Word of God, has come to us. The One that spoke everything into being and Who holds all things together by His Word… has come and spoken.
His Word has power. His Word is the final and ultimate authority. His Word matters most.
Old Testament - God speaking through prophets to the fathers. New Testament - God speaking through the Son to us.
2 Peter 1:21 - Prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Spirit
2 Timothy 3:16 - All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.
Hebrews 4:12 - The Word of God is living, active, and powerful...
And the Son of God has spoken the final word. So, the Scriptures are complete… The Bible is complete. We do not add and we do not take away.
We do not go to the Koran, to The Pearl of Great Price, or to any other “sacred” writing used by other religions. We have the Word of God. It is faithful, trustworthy and true.
Why? Because God, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit is faithful, trustworthy and true.
Christ is the heir of all things. All things were made by Him and for Him. He owns all things. He has authority over all creation, even us… and so… When He speaks...
Where else can we go to get the final Word? To angels, to Moses… where?
Jesus, the Son of God… Verse 3 - Is the Brightness of God’s glory and He is the express image of His person...
The glory of God… The light of the world expresses the glory of God. The Mount of Transfiguration… the blinding light of His glory is on display… a light that no man can behold. In the end of time, there will be no sun or moon… only Christ is needed to fill existence with light.
Christ is the image of the invisible God (Col. 1:15). He is not on the same level as angels, or Moses, or any other created thing. He stands alone as God the Son.
He holds the universe and every cell of our being in place. He is moving all things, keeping every thing in order… and moving everything to completion.
And it is He… Who has purged our sins… the One Who sits next to the Father in heaven, Who is King of Kings and Lord or Lords.
He is in the position of absolute authority. He is The Victorious Savior. His work, His Life and Blood, speaks a better word that Abel’s (Hebrews 12:24). His Life, His Blood, His Word has spoken a final Word over you and over me...
He is sitting on the Throne. He has spoken. The Work is done. It is finished. The work of salvation is done.
What He has said will come to pass. What He has done has and will come to pass. His promises are “yes and amen.”
He has the words of life. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Where else can you go? Who else can speak like Him? Who else can do what He does and will do? Who else can provide and give eternal life?
Hebrews… people of God. Where can you go? You are going through pain. You are going through persecution. Christians are being imprisoned and killed for their faith...
But where can you Go? Why are you turning back from this God, this Savior… to go back to religion, animal sacrifices, business as usual…?
God has come to die for you… not an angel… not Moses… Why would you want to turn back from the soul who saved your soul?
Oh, people of God… We have a Mighty Savior, One Worthy to live and die for.
Don’t turn back. Don’t turn to any one other.
Jesus is Supreme. Keep looking and continue to follow after Him.
He will keep you and bring you home.
