Intro
We get so caught up in doing for God, that we forget who God is.
Main Idea: God Builds His House
David has been installed as king. He has made Jerusalem the capital. Entered into a time of peace. Good time to maybe build a house.
2 Samuel 7:1-17
Fact #1: His Dwelling Place is with His People (1-7)
Exp. In Jerusalem. We see David desiring to build a house for God. Verses 1-2. House is used 7x in this section. Sabbatical theme. Rest. David wanted to provide rest for God. God lives in a tent or curtain. Tabernacle was hundreds of years old by now. Nathan agreed. Verse 3. Never underestimate the power of a friend who encourages you to do things. God did not want this plan. So, he spoke to Nathan. Verses 4-6. He hasn’t lived in a house since the day, why would he need one now? Clearly God has never asked for anything else. Why? God didn’t need a house. He wanted to be with the people. Theologians call this the incarnational principle. God wants to be in same condition as his people. They were on the move, so was he. God’s desire was to be with his people.
Ill. Just as fathers desire to be with their children. Think of your desire to be with your kids and multiply it by a billion. You will still be far off from.
Arg. Dwelling with Adam and Eve. Tabernacle. Always God’s intentions.
Christ - Jesus came to us. Immanuel. John 15:4, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” The invitation for close fellowship was there. In Christ, we are his dwelling place. The Holy Spirit dwells in us. Our sin kept him from dwelling in us. Through Christ’s sacrifice, we have been made righteous, and the HS came make us his home. He didn’t need us to build his temple. We are the temple.
Acts 17:24–25
The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in temples made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all mankind life and breath and everything.
App. Our attempts to do for God is unwarranted. He does not need from us. We get to participate. How should we respond?
Rest in his plan. God did not need a dwelling place, so he never offered one. You may want to do things ahead of him.
Rest in your role. You get to participate. Serve. Give. Go.
Fact #2: His Kingdom is Eternal (8-17)
Exp. Here comes the covenant he made with David. Verse 8. Reminder of David being called as a shepherd. This passage is full of God’s actions. Calls him a servant and prince. True leader being God. Verse 9. Just as God was with Israel in their wanderings, he was with David. Verses 10-12.
Great name (Gen. 12:2) & Name (2 Sam. 7:9)
Children (Gen. 12:2-3) & Dynastic Succession (2 Sam. 7:12)
Land (Gen. 15:7) & Land (2 Sam. 7:10)
Curse on enemies (Gen. 12:3) & Rest from enemies (2 Sam. 7:10-11)
Exp. Verse 13-15. God promises so much for David’s offspring. David would not build the temple. Solomon would. God’s love would not depart. Verse 16. David would not build God a house, but God would build David a house. David wanted a place for God to rest, but God gives rest to David through this promise. David’s kingdom would be eternal. This is God’s kingdom. God has already chosen a ruler.
Ill. Like watching your children open presents on Christmas morning. You knew what it was, but they had no idea. David and the Jewish people would have no idea, but God had already chosen this eternal ruler: Jesus.
Christ - Jesus is the fulfillment of the line of David and the eternal kingdom. V8 - He is the great shepherd and better David. V9 - Name above all names. V10 - He went to prepare a home for us. V11 - He has defeated all of our enemies. V12 - Of the lineage of David. V13 - His temple would be torn down and rebuilt. V14 - Son of God and was disciplined because of the sins of man. V15 - He is the proof of the love of God. V16 - He is on the throne reigning for all eternity.
App. God builds his kingdom. He also builds his church.
Utilize your gifts for his kingdom.

Enjoy the blessings of his kingdom.
