Review:

The Foundation
1 Corinthians 3:10–11 NASB95
According to the grace of God which was given to me, like a wise master builder I laid a foundation, and another is building on it. But each man must be careful how he builds on it. For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
The Calling
1 Peter 2:4–5 NASB95
And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is choice and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
The Family/Body
Ephesians 4:16 NASB95
from whom the whole body, being fitted and held together by what every joint supplies, according to the proper working of each individual part, causes the growth of the body for the building up of itself in love.
The Giftings (Tools)
1 Corinthians 12:7 NASB95
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:25 NASB95
so that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another.
The 2 Ditches:
Cessationism vs. Sensationalism
A Form of Godliness, but Denying Its Power vs. Syncretistic Practices of the Occult in the Church
For Edification
Because the spiritual gifts are the tools given to us to love God more and love each other better.
The use of spiritual gifts should result in the fruit of the spirit being manifested.
1 Corinthians 14:12 NASB95
So also you, since you are zealous of spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.
1 Corinthians 14:3–4 NASB95
But one who prophesies speaks to men for edification and exhortation and consolation. One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; but one who prophesies edifies the church.
Primary, but not only way to edify the body.
1 Corinthians 14:26 NASB95
What is the outcome then, brethren? When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.
Read Luke 4:14-21

The Calling: Following the Example of Jesus

John 14:11–14 (NASB95)
“Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father is in Me; otherwise believe because of the works themselves. “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father. “Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
Greater = Jesus was limited in time and space, but His body, the church, is not.
Greater works = miracle of regeneration - seeing people born again.
Day of Pentecost - 3000 added to their numbers.
But that does not mean the miracle of regeneration is the only greater work.
The early church saw the Holy Spirit move in many different ways, doing many of the same things that Jesus did.
The purpose: so that the Father is glorified in the Son.

Greater Works - Building Up People

Jesus’ last words to the disciples
Matthew 28:19–20 (NASB95)
“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
The thrust of the teaching:
Making disciples - the building up of people to actively follow Jesus.
Everything Jesus taught is to be passed on.
The disciples were to teach the next generation of disciples to remain in contact with Jesus’ teaching.
2 Timothy 2:2 NASB95
The things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.
The eye-witnesses were to call into being a new generation of ear-witnesses.
Those successive generations are then to pass on “all that Jesus taught”.
The command is to teach all he commands.
That means nothing he taught or commanded is outmoded, outdated, needless or to be replaced.
Jesus said we would have help remembering what He commanded and fulfilling what He commanded.
John 14:26 (NASB95)
“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
Acts 1:8 (NASB95)
but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
The Holy Spirit and the Gifts of the Spirit are crucial, then, to fulfilling the Great Commission.

What Is a Summary of His Teachings and Greater Works to Imitate?

Look at his mission statement:
Luke 4:18–19 (NASB95)
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
His mission statement are the works that He accomplished while on earth.
Using mission and works interchangeably here.
Here are some of the results:
Luke 7:21–23 NASB95
At that very time He cured many people of diseases and afflictions and evil spirits; and He gave sight to many who were blind. And He answered and said to them, “Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: the blind receive sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have the gospel preached to them. “Blessed is he who does not take offense at Me.”
Here’s what He commands His disciples to do that tie into His mission statement:
Matthew 10:7–8 NASB95
“And as you go, preach, saying, ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’ “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. Freely you received, freely give.
Mark 6:7 NASB95
And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;
Luke 9:2 NASB95
And He sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing.
Basically, Jesus says, “Go and do likewise.”
The only part of Jesus’ Mission that only He could provide was the atonement for our sins.
But it’s the atonement of our sins, and then the giving of the Holy Spirit that makes the rest of His mission statement possible for us to fulfill.

The Gifts Fulfill the Mission of Jesus Through the Church

The Anointing Of The Holy Spirit
The Spirit of the Lord was on Him.
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit at His baptism.
The significant connection with Pentecost Sunday - May 19th
The Holy Spirit is on us.
The Year of Jubilee - God The Father’s Favor
Remember this is Jesus bringing forward the prophecy of Isaiah.
This prophecy is all about the Year of Jubilee.
Luke 2:13–14 NIV84
Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.”
Proclaiming the year of the Lord’s Favor
Favor - eudokia - God’s good pleasure, will, purpose, and intent.
it’s because of His grace that we can have eudokia.
This is towards us (believers) because of Jesus Christ.
The year of Jubilee (Trumpet)
Historically, the Year of Jubilee only happened once every 50th year, but it began on the Day of Atonement:
This the day when the High Priest would go in behind the curtain to sprinkle blood on the mercy seat as a propitiation for the sins of the people.
Debts cancelled. Sin removed.
We don’t have to walk in sin or in the shadow of sin any longer.
We’re forgiven. Any obligations on our life have been cancelled.
We no longer owe God anything except the continuing debt to love others as He loved us.
Land returned. Inheritance restored.
What we lost in the Garden of Eden through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, God has restored.
It’s just waiting for us to come and get it.
Metaphorically there’s a sold sign, or better yet a “bought with the blood of Christ sign” on the land and it’s just waiting for us to move in.
Slaves set free. Freedom granted.
Ultimately it’s a reminder that God’s heart is not slavery, but freedom.
We are no longer slaves to sin, fear, hate, worry, self.
We are set free to love as Christ loved us.
In the end it’s a season of grace.
You will see these things repeated in the rest of the mission statement.

Summary / Application:

We are to make disciples and pass on Jesus’ teaching to future generations.
That teaching included doing those works that Jesus did.
Jesus told us that we would do works like His, but even greater than He did them.
A summary of His works is found in His mission statement from Isaiah 61
The Heavenly Father sent us the Holy Spirit to remind us of Jesus’ teachings and empower us to do the same things He did.
With the right heart and attitude we can recite this verse about the current day church as a whole.
With the right discernment we can boldly go and do whichever part of that mission statement applies to us, using the spiritual gifts He’s given us.
Luke 4:18–19 NASB95
The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”
