David Part 2
David Part 2
Trusting God’s Plan:
“How can I know all that and not know who I am?”
It’s a great question.
David was someone who had all the skills.
he had all the accolades.
He was arguably one of the most successful humans that ever lived.
Why?
In a short answer this morning, because he trust God.
Even when it seemed like the plan was right in front of him, he trusted God and His plans.
That’s a good questions and lesson for us this morning.
Are we trusting God and His plans?

Read 1 Samuel 26:7-11
1 Samuel 26:7–11 (NIV)
7 So David and Abishai went to the army by night, and there was Saul, lying asleep inside the camp with his spear stuck in the ground near his head. Abner and the soldiers were lying around him. 8 Abishai said to David, “Today God has delivered your enemy into your hands. Now let me pin him to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I won’t strike him twice.” 9 But David said to Abishai, “Don’t destroy him! Who can lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed and be guiltless? 10 As surely as the Lord lives,” he said, “the Lord himself will strike him, or his time will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish. 11 But the Lord forbid that I should lay a hand on the Lord’s anointed. Now get the spear and water jug that are near his head, and let’s go.”
Now at this time, David had already been annointed king…
David has already slain Goliath.
But Saul is actively trying to kill David.
Saul’s Kingdom, the kingdom of man feels threatened.
So in my view, David had every right and wouldn’t have been wrong to kill Saul here.
Even better, one of David’s own men offers to do the job for him, yet David refuses.
WHY?
David knew God would keep His promise of giving him the kingdom in His timing.
David was secure in God and God’s plan.
Because David trusted God’s plan, he could show grace to his enemies.
That’s wild.
That’s almost unimaginable grace.
Let’s apply this today.
And let me be clear, I don’t know what the answer is to this problem.
But it’s all connected.
Right now in our country we have protests across our country that are pro-Hamas.
They are in favor of hatred towards the Jews and killing the Jewish people.
They are shutting college campuses down and rioting.
I don’t know if people have been hurt yet, but let’s be clear, with the escalation of these conflicts, people are going to get hurt.
Sitting in here this morning, some of you are a few months away from a college campus, some of you a couple years or less, some of you more, and some of you may never step onto a college campus.
But let me also be clear…
This is not a message of fear. This is not mean’t to scare you. But this is a reality check out of our comfy little Spartanburg town we live in ok.
The world is not safe.
You are going to in your life have to make real decisions where you decide things that make people dislike you, hate you, actively make you their enemy.
Again, I’m not trying to scare you but you need to hear a reality check this morning.
This world is not safe.
Our calling is not into a world of safety.
Our calling, to make disciples like we are talking about on Wednesdays right now, is to go out and be salt and light in a dark, evil world.
The reason we read about putting on the armor of God in Ephesians 6 isn’t because God’s armor is a fashion statement…
It’s because we are called to arms.
We are called to be the remnant of people on earth who stand for the truth.
That’s why Ephesians 6:10–11 “10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”
Sometimes, that may mean you have to stand your ground and fight for the truth.
Some days guys, that means it looks like your enemy is right in front of you ready to be taken out, and God calls you to trust Him instead.
The point is, David didn’t go looking for a fight, He sought God’s will.
That’s the message.
We are not called to pick fights, but at the same time, that doesn’t mean the fight won’t come to us.
And when the fight comes, will I trust in my strength and abilities like Saul?
Or, will I seek God and His will for my life like David?
Make no mistake, neither place is a place of comfort, safety, or free from danger.
But that’s not the world God calls us into either.
We would be naive think it is.
David was secure in God’s plan?
How secure will you be to trust God’s plan when you don’t even know what it is?
When all the pressure is against you?
That right there is THE reason, we walk with Jesus today!
Guys, walk with Jesus NOW! in the good times!
The soldier doesn’t go into the battlefield unprepared, no.
The soldier spends 99% of his time preparing.
David’s refusal to kill Saul is an incredible display of trust in God.
But we will see soon how God used this in David’s life.
Sometime Else we are going to look at this morning as we discuss David’s trust in God revolves around the ark.
Not Noah’s ark… But the ark of the covenant.
In 2 Samuel 6, David is now King.
During Saul’s kingship, Saul had neglected the worship of God.
The Philistines had captured the ark from Israel in a battle and had kept it as a trophy of war.
Now, this ended up being a disaster for the Philistines and they returned it to Israel.
But Saul never put the ark back in the tabernacle, he just ignored it basically.
So a man named OBed-Edom had the ark in his house.
We read in 2 Samuel 6:12-15
12 Now King David was told, “The Lord has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God.” So David went to bring up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the Lord had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 Wearing a linen ephod, David was dancing before the Lord with all his might, 15 while he and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the Lord with shouts and the sound of trumpets.
17 They brought the ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the tent that David had pitched for it, and David sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings before the Lord. 18 After he had finished sacrificing the burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord Almighty. 19 Then he gave a loaf of bread, a cake of dates and a cake of raisins to each person in the whole crowd of Israelites, both men and women. And all the people went to their homes.
Believe it or not, there’s actually a lot going on here, but I can make it simple for us this morning.
Back in Deuteronomy in the times of Moses, Moses established political leaders and Religious leaders.
As that leadership model was passed down through generations, God established the tribe of Levi as the priests and the tribe of Judah to be the political leaders.
Saul’s primary sin that lost him the kingship was he tried to act as a King and a Priest, then lied about it to the prophet Samuel, then doubled down on his lie…
David here in 2 Samuel “where the linen Ephod” also seems to take on a king and priest role, but it’s not viewed as a bad thing.
Why?
The idea of King and Priest is foundational to God’s story.
There were some good kings and MANY bad kings in Israel’s history.
But God didn’t setup the leaders to be both political leaders and religious leaders.
That tension still remains today.
You couldn’t be both a pastor and a politician…
We need both, but you can’t be both at the same time.
This picture of David here though isn’t about selfishness.
Saul’s was.
You see Jesus would be the only one who acted as King and Priest.
He was mean’t for both Israel and Gentiles.
When David brings the ark back and seems to play a king and priest role, God uses this to foreshadow a time where we see Jesus.
King and Priest roles
Role of the King and Priests in the Bible.
Revelation 22:16 (NIV)
16 “I, Jesus, have sent my angel to give you this message for the churches. I am both the source of David and the heir to his throne. I am the bright morning star.”
9 And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. 10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”
Don’t miss this, in the end of time too, every person who believes in Jesus.
All people from all cultures, nationalities, and people groups will be represented in Heaven as long as they have turned from their sin, and given their lives to Jesus.
And in heaven it says God establishes His people as Kingdoms and Priests to serve God.
In other words, from the time of Moses, all the way to the future time where we are with Jesus in heaven, the idea of Kings and Priests is there.
One day, God’s believers, will be kings and priests in Heaven.
Oh what a day that will be guys.
But this all comes down today to where we started.
APPLICATiON:
Do I trust in God’s plan?
Or do I trust in my own plan?
I can’t imagine being David, knowing it’s God’s plan to be king… seeing the guy in front of you who is actively trying to kill you, and then walking away from the opportunity to kill him yourself.
All because He trusted God.
That’s amazing.
But it’s also completely possible for us as well.
We must be walking with Christ.
We must be trusting Him.
Like John 15, we need to be remaining in the vine every day.
I hope when I wake up tomorrow, I say thank you Jesus for this day. I will walk in your grace and your truth today.
I hope when life gets harder for all of us and we face decisions we don’t know how to handle every day, that we will put on the full armor of God, and trust Him to fight our battles for us.
But it starts with giving Jesus our time.
Giving Him our thoughts.
Giving Him our prayers.
Giving Him our attitudes.
Giving Him our life.
Are you walking with Jesus today?
Are you trusting Him with every moment.
It’s not just about one time in your life where you walked an aisle and said Yes to Jesus…
It’s about daily waking up and choosing to trust Him today.
Trust Him.
