Matthew 24:36–39 ““But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.”
Matthew 24:44 “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.”
when Jesus returns, He will find 2 types of servants
1. faithful and wise servant
blessed when master returns
because servant found being faithful
result
united with God—heaven—eternal life
2. wicked, unfaithful servant
delays and dishonors the Lord
finds pleasure in this world
result
separated from God—hell—weeping and gnashing of teeth
if Jesus returned today, what type of servant are you?
1. those that “say” they believe but life does not support
many are distracted
too busy with work, sports, leisure for the things of Christ
faith is compartmentalized to Sundays
pursuing the things of Christ has no place in rest of life
2. those that believe and transformed life is a result
faithful and wise servant
things of God are a priority
fully devoted follower of Jesus
what type of servant are you?
not just asking if you made a decision
not asking if you were baptized
asking if you are living a life pursuing Jesus
asking if you have been changed by Christ…and have never been the same
Matthew 7:13–14 ““Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.”

Are You Ready for Judgment Day?

remember: judgment day is coming for everyone
account of Noah not ideal baby nursery material
but much like Judgment Day when worldwide accountability will reign
Lecrae—“Fear”
Will I hear well done when he turn to me?
Will I hear you care too much
About all of this stuff that really don't matter?
You chase the wind and you won it
Got to the top of a two foot ladder
only one thing matters when you die
only one thing matters on judgment day
Joel 2:11For the day of the Lord is great and very awesome; who can endure it?
when the floodwaters come crashing in
will you be in the ark?
5:1-3 pew Bible # 5
the account of Noah begins with his ancestor Seth
image bearing and likeness of God carried on past Adam to his offspring
including you and me
a couple of notables
Enoch (5:24)
7th generation
contrast 7th generation of Cain—Lamech (Gen 4)
Methuselah
lived 969 years (5:27)
Lamech contrasted with his namesake
lived 777 years (5:31)
you’ll also notice they lived a long time before Noah
almost 1,000 years which seems like a long time
but is a mere day in the light of eternity
then comes a difficult passage to understand but explains our short lifespans in comparison
6:1-3
sons of God and daughters of man
120 years
left alone, humanity gravitates toward immorality…even evil
6:5-7
God grieved His ultimate creation—humanity
because every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually (6:5)
new then
but not throughout history
Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?”
recommendation: don’t follow your heart
black screen
morals tend to slide down the slope and sometimes fall off the cliff
course language is “normal” on tv
Leave It to Beaver way back
Golden Girls then
many of popular shows streaming today
rated MA = R
movies “need” to be provocative
super hero movies that appeal to boys
aren’t edgy enough for men
sexual misconduct
among people we are to trust
teachers—not in another state, but in our own town
politicians—take your pick, on both sides of the aisle
pastors—Josh McDonald spending time in prison
homosexuality
something people would hide
now it is something that is celebrated
even inside some churches and their leadership
my own heart
Romans 7:18 “For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.”
our heart is bent towards sin
Noah had evil all around him which is why he really stood out
Noah started preparing for the flood long before he gathered any wood for the ark
6:8-9
he was building an ark before he knew he was gonna need an ark or before God told him to
righteous
blameless
Noah walked with God
6:22—Noah did this; he did all that God commanded him.
7:5—And Noah did all that the Lord had commanded him.
Noah stood out like a firework on a dark night in his generation
how?
his life was totally God-directed
even though he does not say one word
his actions speak
walked with God
did all that God commanded him
built an altar to the Lord
Noah was preparing for judgment day that will come to us all (6:8-9, 22)
most today don’t prepare for judgment day
they’re too busy with their
job
family
hobby
Jesus is just not important enough to them
many church goers do not think of spiritual things except on Sunday
eternal matters do not penetrate their work week or free time
what would God say about you?
God decided to judge the earth through a flood and save Noah
God instructed Noah to build an ark (6:13-16)
450 ft long
75 ft wide
45 ft high
43,000 tons
replica in KY (x2)
Creation Museum
Answers in Genesis
God prepared Noah and his family long before He sent the flood
building an ark with modern tools would be a task
but with primitive tools would be unthinkable nowadays
how long would it take to gather enough wood???
black screen
then Noah and his family went into the ark
with 2 representatives of creation (male and female)
7:16
God hates sin and judges it
judgment day will come like the flood
40 days and 40 nights (7:12)
Hurricane Harvey (x2)
Amanda’s childhood home
never even had puddles in yard or water in home
not in a flood zone
water up to eaves
FBC Loeb (x3)
was only 5 days
black screen
high mountains under the whole heaven were covered (7:19)
if mountains of Ararat (8:4) includes Mount Ararat in Turkey
16,854 feet
Pike’s Peak 14,115
And the waters prevailed on the earth 150 days. (7:24)
150 (includes 40 days) / 30 = 5 months
judgment day came (7:21-23)
reversal of creation and order
chaos has ensued
the life giver has now seen fit to take it away
except those in the ark (rescue capsule)
only way to survive
are you in the ark?
judgment day is coming
are you ready?
don’t be too worried about what you will
eat for lunch
do this summer
not even
who you will marry
when you will retire
make sure you are in the ark
8:1
God remembered Noah
months before dry land
& Noah remembered God (8:20-22)
extra animals are now sacrificed
9:8-17
God covenanted with Noah and his descendants (humanity)
totally on His own initiative
even when Noah later fails, God’s covenant remains
no condition of obedience, unconditional covenant for all humanity
God will not flood the earth again
the rainbow is to celebrate God’s promise to never again flood the whole earth
not to celebrate a life of sin in homosexuality
in the end, being in the ark is not all about you building your own ark
Noah would have never built an ark in time if God didn’t tell him
Noah’s job was trusting God, then obeying God
God is the only one who makes new beginnings in Christ
we live in a world full of sin
we even have a heart that is full of sin
God hates sin and judges it
there will be a day when God will judge the sins of the world
there will be a day when God will judge YOUR sin
Acts 17:30–31 “The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.””
are you ready for judgment day?
are you in the ark? are you in Christ?
doesn’t matter if you get that promotion at work
doesn’t matter if your child makes the all-star team
doesn’t even matter if you pay your house note
GOSPEL
loving tone
what does your life look like today?
living like you don’t think Jesus could return at any hour
resting, trusting, and faithfully serving like Jesus could return at any moment
