Luke 4:31-44
Commonly believed versions of Jesus- Read from sheet
Discussion with a pastor from Austin, TX (“Jesus didn’t say, that Timothy did, Jesus wouldn’t…”)
Love= Saying nothing authoritative… Soft… Gentile… a pushover (Parents- Let kids do whatever… Love you)
Luke will challenge this view of Jesus
Jesus’ fame is growing- Read Luke 4:14, 37; 5:15- Teaching/miracles… if there was social media… He’d be trending for sure
Scene 1- Read Luke 4:31-32- Authority/Power… this was different from what they were used to.
Mark’s gospel records this story- Read Mark 1:22- “Not as the Scribes” (Usual teachers)(Just quote stuff)
“You have heard it said, but I say to you…”- AUTHORITY!
Then something happens- Read Luke 4:33-34- Demon can’t stand the presence of Christ
“Ha!”= not laugher, but displeasure… “Go away” “Scram”
The demon knew exactly who Jesus was… “The Holy One of God”
Read Luke 4:35-37- Cosmic battle between Good and Evil… How is Jesus going to defeat????? (Scared)
“Be silent, come out of him.”… Just his word… He rebukes him…
There was some weird exorcism stuff in Jesus day (learning the names of the demons, by name calling them out…)
THEIR REACTION= “What is this WORD?Authority, power, commands
Scene 2- Peter’s house- Read Luke 4:38-39- Peter’s MIL with high fever (those days, probably would have died)
Jesus stood over her and REBUKED THE FEVER… AND immediately she was well.
NOT, she began to recover/Jesus told her to drink enough fluidsSHE STARTED SERVING IMMEDIATELY
Teaching with authority/Defeats demons with words/Rebukes a fever with his words…
In Luke 8- Jesus calms the storm- Read Luke 8:25b- Afraid… even the wind and water obey him…
It doesn’t sound like Cool Dad/Soft Jesus, does it??? Power and authorityHE ACTUALLY SOUNDS MORE LIKE A KING
Scene 3- Night time… everyone is bringing their sick loved onesRead Luke 4:40-41
He continues to heal by rebuking… Showing his power and authority (Doesn’t let them talk…)
Scene 4- He does this all night, and thenRead Luke 4:42-44- They were attempting to keep him from leaving town.
His response is critical… “Preaching?” Is that He’s doing… I thought he was healing people.
The purpose of miracles (25 mir in Luke/36 in gospels)
Compassion- Yes, but that’s not the primary purpose….
The Lord and Moses/Ex. 4:1-9- “They wont believe me”…Read Exodus 4:1- Staff/Serpent & Hand/Coat
Read Exodus 4:5- That they would HEAR YOU/LISTEN TO YOU
Jesus is healing and casting out demons TO PREACHThat they will listen to his words (Nicodemus- “No one”)
Preach what? The GOOD NEWS OF THE KINGDOM OF GOD. (First mention in Luke… 31 more in Luke)
What is the Kingdom of God?- The rule and reign of God over His creation (Everything)
Jesus says that His kingdom is not of this world (Already, but not yet)(He is the king, but it’s invisible now)
He shows us here that he is the king… He gives these people a glimpse… (LISTEN…)
Do you see Him as King? (Just savior, just prophet and priest?)
Just prophet?= Hurling commands at you/Just priest?= Just a comforter in time of need/Just Savior?= You’re center
He is King, we are not/ He is King, our politicians are not/ He is King, celebrities are not
He’s gentile & He’s authoritative/He’s gracious & He’s direct/He’s good & He’s the King
Read Matthew 11:28-30, BUT… ALSO Matthew 11:20-24
Without taking sin seriously…without rebuking demons… no love
These are not conflicting things… If Jesus were a cool dad/soft… He wouldn’t be good/loving/caring
He is the King/He has authority/He commands/He says uncomfortable things- Read C.S. Lewis quote from sheet
Treat like the King? Who’s voice is authoritative? (Commands demons out/rebukes fevers)(How do we view Word?)
Even when we don’t treat him like the King, He loves and forgives… (THE GOOD KING!!!)
We live for the king now and give the world a glimpse of the Kingdom
We are witnesses to the King- Read Acts 1:6-8
We proclaim good news/Way we act/Way we talk/Way we love/Beliefs on cultural issues/Parenting/Marriage/Single
