Luke 4:1-13
Temptation of Jesus—- If we start here… like beginning with the second episode of a documentary… (won’t get it unless…)
The command- Read Genesis 2:15-17- Eat of all the trees, just one don’t… not good for you (Will they believe Him?)
The Temptation- Read Genesis 3:1-3- Misquoting God’s Word (You can’t eat of any trees?)(Sounds heavy-handed??)
Read Genesis 3:4-5- God is holding out on you/It’s not bad for you to eat… come on… think for yourself…
Read Genesis 3:6-7- Disobedience/sin/shame
(1) See Jesus as the second and greater Adam, (2) See Satan’s ways (Both are helpful for us today)
NOTICE- The last five words of genealogy- Read Luke 3:38b… The very next thing is Jesus’ temptation…
“Adam, the son of God”—— AND—— Satan calls Jesus “Son of God” twice (3, 9)
Read Luke 4:1-2- Wilderness/No food (Differences between Adam and Jesus)(He’s really a man… Hungry)
(1) Temptation #1- Read Luke 4:3- “You don’t have to do this…” “Why would your Father want this for you…?”
If you are the Son of God”… (3:22- “You are my beloved Son…”)(LOVE YOU…)
Satan’s schemes are always the sameDOUBT THE GOODNESS OF GOD/MAKE US QUESTION
Jesus’s response- Read Luke 4:4- Quotes Deut. 8:3- Wilderness wanderings of Israel/Complained about food
God provides for His people… HE IS GOOD! (THAT’S THE ISSUE!!!!)
(2) Temptation #2- Read Luke 4:5-7- “You don’t have to go to the cross”“Why would your Father want that?”
You can have your kingdom now… Just worship me… I’ll give it to you…
BIG QUESTION: Could Satan offer this? (Ruler, Prince, God of this world)… (Only what God allows him)
The point= Doubt the Father’s goodness (You don’t need to feel pain)
“JESUS… THINK FOR YOURSELF… YOU DON’T WANT TO GO TO THE CROSS…”
Jesus’s response- Read Luke 4:8- Quotes Deut 6:13- Worship Him because He’s worthy… HE IS GOOD!
The pain is a part of the plan… NOT BECAUSE GOD IS NOT GOOD… BUT BECAUSE HE IS GOOD!
No cross/no pain… No sacrifice for sin… God’s people remain condemned…
Jesus’s response to Peter now makes more sense- Read Matthew 16:23
Twice now… “The Father’s not good” AND Jesus quotes Scripture… SO… (“You want to quote… prove that you believe it”)
(3) Temptation #3- Read Luke 4:9-11- You don’t really believe this stuff… that He’s good… if so… Jump…
Satan quotes Psalm 91- Mis-applies on purpose… Nothing to do with jumping to test God….(God will protect His ppl)
I hope this doesn’t surprise anyone that Satan quotes Scripture (So much false doctrine is spread this way)
Genesis 3, Luke 4,… Pastors, teachers, authors… (Cherry pick verses)
Jesus’s response- Read Luke 4:12-13- Quotes Deut 6:16- I don’t need to test God… I know He’s good.
No doubts as to your spouse’s faithfulness, but you test him… stake out… WHY? (Kid’s skipping school…)
Adam… tempted to doubt God’s goodness= Failed/Jesus… tempted to doubt God’s goodness=Obeyed
Read Romans 5:18-19- Condemned in Adam/Justified in Jesus! OUR SECOND AND BETTER ADAM!!!
Here: (1) Believers/(2) Non-believers/(3) Non-belivers who think they’re believers (TX)
Christians believe they are saved by Christ’s obedience/Not their own (active and passive)
YET, we are told to resist sin like He did (We are new creations…)
Read Romans 6:1-2, 12-13- JUST STOP SINNING!!!!! NO… (1) The Nature of temp, (2) The Weapons we have
(1) Nature of Temptation (we learn something about temptation and sin)
The Lord has graciously given us His commands- ARE THEY GOOD FOR US OR NOT? (That’s the question)
When tempted we are confronted with that question… DO I BELIEVE HIS COMMANDS ARE GOOD?
When we disobey, we have decided that we know better what is best… what will satisfy us…
THE REASON TEMPTATIONS ARE TEMPTING IS THAT THEY ARE GOOD THINGS…
Jesus= (1) Bread, (2) King receving His Kingdom, (3) Trusting God…. GOOD, GOOD, GOOD…
The things we long for… Love, acceptance, satisfactionARE GOOD THINGS!!!
We sin when we disbelieve God’s goodness/promises: LOVES US/ACCEPTED US/WILL SATIS. US
WE MISS OUT ON NOTHING WHEN WE OBEY THE LORD (FOMO)
Friend (adultery): “I wasn’t believing that God’s commands would give me what I most wanted…”
“God loves me and wants the best for me”… people use this to excuse sin ALL THE TIME (His commands are what’s best)
(2) The Weapons we have (1) The Spirit- Union with Christ (Us in Him/Him in us)(warns/convicts/illuminates)
(2) God’s Word- Reading, studying, memorizing, meditating… IS NOT FOR STANDING
It’s for: (1) communion with the LORD and for (2) The Sword (Eph 6)- Read Psalm 119:11-16
So important for our lives: Habits of Grace class (Spiritual disc- Prayer, Scripture, Fasting, etc)
Maybe you’re dealing with extreme guilt this morning: Satan- “Do it, it’s fine”/ “You are horrible, he doesn’t love you.”
Read Before the Throne of God Above lyrics
Read Hebrews 4:15-16- We go to him for understanding and grace…
