Good morning… Gospel of Luke (6th week)… Jesus’ adult life (12 verses on Jesus at 12)

This morning, hundreds of thousands of Christian churches gather in America…

Not all say the same things about Jesus… (who he is/what he did/what he commands)//(Outside of church= Same)

LUKE (beginning Jesus’ public ministry)= WHO IS JESUS?

Places story in history- Read Luke 3:1-2- Look at all those names…

Important people of the day (Political and Religious)(Today- President/Governors/Senators/celebrity pastors)

Who does the Lord speak through? “Word of God came to John”… wilderness, crazy guy, eating bugs…

John prepares the way for Jesus, the Christ- Read Luke 3:3-6- Remember the important people from v. 1-2…

JTB is quoting Is. 40:3… It’s a kingly introduction… PREPARE THE WAY FOR THE KING!

Roads not paved… trodden down paths… winding between hills and large rocks…

BUT… when I king would enter into a new place… THEY’D PREPARE THE WAY FOR HIM… (engineers and heralds)

Heralds- to announce the greatness of the king/ Engineers- to move things for the road… the road didn’t go around obstacles…

JTB was proclaiming Jesus as the REAL KING! (Today: Kings and queens- author, athlete, artist, actor)

Famous people treated this way: People move (Get out of way/change reservations/seating/president’s motorcade)

Read Luke 3:3- “Repentance”… “Change your mind”… WHO DO YOU SAY THE KING IS? (Move your mind/heart)

Who is he?- Read Luke 3:15-17- Of course people were confused (we have bird’s eye view, they didn’t)(football- QB)

He is the Judge (17) AND the Savior(16)- “I baptize with water… he baptizes with the Holy Spirit” (Gives HS, regeneration)

Do you see how John’s description assumes SIN, UNWORTHINESS, NEED… (not moral teacher/not encourager)

He is the King (16)- “I’m not even worthy to untie his sandals”

Great teachers would have disciples who voluntarily acted as slaves (but unstrapping sandals was too much)

JTB says… I AM NOT EVEN WORTHY TO DO THAT… THIS IS THE KING OF THE UNIVERSE!

Because He’s the king… He commands- Read Luke 3:10-14- What shall we do? LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR!

The king is the creator/A way he created humans/fulfillment/happiness/satisfaction

Everyone likes these! The world agrees with these! (Share with needy, Don’t steal)

WHY? They might say, “Because it’s good”, “It’s right”, “It’s rational…”

Western culture has stolen from Christianity and then judged it for not being virtuous enough…

Happens a lot today- Objective ethics/All people are equal… dignity, value, respect)(FROM XIANITY)

“These are just rational”… says who… where did this come from???

Benjamin Franklin- “self-evident that all men are created equal…” (BUT IT’S NOT)(NOT WITHOUT CREATOR)

Christianity also: Marriage/Abortion/sex given/Discipling kids at home… Judged for these things…

JTB= JESUS IS THE KING… SHAPE YOUR LIFE AROUND HIS WAYS… NOT YOURS- Read Luke 3:3- Repent

This IS NOT attrition (Kids when caught sorry b/c don’t want consequences)…

THIS IS NOT CHRISTIAN BAPTISM- symbolic of cleansing… BUT identifying with John’s message (why Jesus was baptized)

Read Luke 3:21-22- Jesus agreeing with John’s message… Be baptized because of the forgiveness of sin…

Trinity- “Well-pleased”= The Father is well-pleased with Jesus (If you are IN HIM… He is well pleased with you)

Two types of people that need to repent (Religious and Rebellious)(Both about self…)

(1) Religious- Read Luke 3:7-9- Many came to be baptized… “You brood of vipers” (children of the serpent)(Venom/Dang.)

Hypocrites… they didn’t think they needed cleansing… JUST WALKING THROUGH THE RELIGIOUS MOTIONS

Radical for Jews to hear… EVERYONE GET BAPTIZED!!! (Custom was that Gentiles would be baptized when con. To Judaism)

Aren’t interested in Jesus… but don’t want to go to hell (So much of American Christianity… OR GET MATERIAL THINGS)

Intrinsic vs extrinsic Christianity (Intrinsic= I walk with Jesus to be with Jesus/Extrinsic= I walk… to get _______.)

(2) Rebellious- Read Luke 3:18-20- Herod- Threw John in jail and had him beheaded for criticizing his marriage to Herodias

Divorced wife/Married niece… who was still his brother's wife… (Matt 14)

Herodias was so enraged that JTB would publicly criticize… she had him beheaded…

I’ll live my life how I want… Don’t get in my way… THE KING MOVES FOR ME… NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
