This Have to do With Me?
— James 5:16
Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.
So, some of you that were at the park Eclipse weekend some of this will sound familiar, and but we will see about taking this a little different direction.
So check this out!
I was reading the bible the other day, yes folks I read my bible, and I came across this account.
The Wedding at Cana
— John 2:4-7
And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. Jesus said to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” So they filled them up to the brim.
Just a little insight to this passage.
Jesus was not being derogatory to his mother. Its nothing like the way many men spesk ton there wives. Woman , get me a beer!! Woman get my supper cooked!!! Woman blah blah blah!
Jesus was addressing her as in rank.
Many believe all she was asking was for Jesus to help out because she needed help and she was his mother. Also many believe this was a wedding of a family member.
Mom was helping host and she needed help. She was not necessarily asking for a miracle although she had to have known that Jesus was the Son of God. Since it was a virgin birth….lol
So that’s the setting.
Another thing,
Yes, this is where many folks try to justify their drinking but there are far more important details here.
A deeper revelation here, one that will put you in awe of our maker. The deeper understandings of the scriptures that will give you a desire to be like Jesus.
The heart of God is in the scriptures!! In the life of Jesus and the things he did!
To love like Jesus.
How does Jesus love?
What does it look like to love like Jesus?
To reach the hearts of mankind with the love of God!!
To touch people's hearts with the only the thing that has the power to save them!!
The Gospel of Jesus Christ!!
The sole purpose of His coming was to save whosoever would come to him!!!
To put his life on the line to change the lives of all of mankind. To take time out of His glorious home in heaven and come down here to do what?
To give life!
It hit me like a ton of bricks the other morning in this simple little question Jesus asked his mother.
What does this have to do with me,he asked?
Don't you know my time has not yet come?
Do you think Jesus meant what he said when he said “my time has not yet come”?
Of course, Jesus meant what he said. Jesus was not exaggerating. Or making the story bigger than it really was.
It was not yet his time!
There are several different ideas of what Jesus meant by this saying.
1.Many times “the hour”in the NT refers to the time of his crucifiction. I dont really agree with this thought. It doesnt make sense. His ministry hadnt even started. So this idea doesn’t fit with how Jesus conducted himself for example when he cleanses the temple later in this same chapter. He wasn’t worried about becoming known too much when he ran the thieves from the temple did he? So wasn’t meaning “the hour”of his crucifixion or betrayal.
2.I already mentioned it but Jesus could be referring to his ministry in general. “It's not time for me to start my ministry yet”.
3.John Mcarther in one of his books
(i dont recommend anything from him)
Said that Jesus was on a decreed set schedule set by God before the foundations of the world and that Jesus was referring to the time of his crucifixion. Which if this was the case then Jesus broke the decree of God.
That doesn't work.
4. Another gentleman by the name of Derek Leman states this.
“John interprets Yeshua’s nature miracles, such as turning water into wine, as the Messiah letting slip through the screen a bit of the divine glory that was his from the foundation of the world. Only the creator of water, of grape vines, can transmute matter in such an omnipotent manner. And Yeshua did not pray and ask God to perform the miracle. He apparently did it himself. He let slip his glory, allowing it to show through, for those who paid close attention, and thought deeply about such things. Of course, no one got it. No one understood until the revelation was made more obvious in the ascension and in later appearances of Yeshua from heaven, seated on the throne of heaven beside God.”
Leman later states:
“There is a mysterious indication that Mary knew Yeshua’s divine power, leading even very early in Christian history to speculation about miracles he may have worked in his youth . The miracle is a sign fostering belief in his disciples, manifesting his Glory, his hidden identity (vs. 11)…
John 2:11 NIV
What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee was the first of the signs through which he revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.
Why does Yeshua feel this is not his business?
It wasn't time for him to start doing miracles yet.
But what did Jesus do?
It wasn’t his time, but he went ahead and gave them instructions and performed his first miracle!
He put his time to the side and showed some compassion to his mother and the host of the party helped them out.
Why would he do that?
He put others before himself.
Jesus cares about people! He cared about his mom and those he was around.
He was fulfilling the 2nd of the two greatest commandments.
Loving people!
Jesus had something in store that he was gonna start his ministry with because “it wasn't his time" yet but he changed his plans and started early. He let a little glory be known and seen and honored his mama.
Thats what it says right?
What does this have to do with me Jesus said!
He wants to be good to people. He wants to love them and show them the way!
The way to eternal life!
He wants to light our paths with himself …. The Truth….
But not only the Truth but
The way!!
And the life!!.
Everything Jesus done was to show his Love through his power to do miracles and to forgive sins and to show his deity. Jesus is God in the flesh. And he came to save us from our sin!!
Which one is bolder? To heal into forgive sins?
That’s what Jesus ask the Pharisees!
Which is easier to do? To heal or to forgive sins?
They answered “well only God can forgive sins and only God can heal”
Thats right only God can heal and forgive!!!
So, what does this have to do with Jesus?
What does this water to wine thing have to do with Jesus?
I say this and I say it loudly!!!
EVERYTHING!!!
Jesus is God!!
And him changing the starting point of his ministry by turning water into wine , he did so because his mama asked him to!!!
Remember our opening scripture?
James 5:16b NIV
The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
It reminds me of Moses on the mountain with God!
Exodus 32:11-14 NLT
11 ”But Moses tried to pacify the Lord his God. “O Lord!” he said. “Why are you so angry with your own people whom you brought from the land of Egypt with such great power and such a strong hand?
12Why let the Egyptians say, ‘Their God rescued them with the evil intention of slaughtering them in the mountains and wiping them from the face of the earth’? Turn away from your fierce anger. Change your mind about this terrible disaster you have threatened against your people!
13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You bound yourself with an oath to them, saying, ‘I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars of heaven. And I will give them all of this land that I have promised to your descendants, and they will possess it forever.’” So the Lord changed his mind about the terrible disaster he had threatened to bring on his people.“
Do you remember what was going on there?
They had escaped from Egypt and now at the mountain of God.
Moses had went up and came back down and found that they had made them a golden calf!!
God was angry!!!
But at the same time He is merciful!!!
He was gonna wipe them all out and start over with Moses.
But Moses interceded for the people and his prayer was powerful and effective.
Moses was an upright man!
God heard his prayer and relented!!!
You know God could have and would have started over with Moses but Moses prayed.
He was a man with issues…. Aman with anger issues. He had some fears. But he knew God and wanted God to be glorified.
God wanted to answer Moses prayer. God wanted to show himself mighty ob Moses behalf.
Jesus wanted to show honor to his mother when she asked for some help with the wine!
God wants to answer your prayers!!
God wants to know you and wants you to know him!!
