Deuteronomy 33:27
“The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms; and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them” (Deuteronomy 33:27).
Our God is no second-rate Deity. Moses speaks of five wonderful aspects of God which exalts His great Person.
FIRST—THE SUPREMENESS OF GOD
“The eternal God” God has always existed. The finite mind of man cannot comprehend eternity for we must have a beginning and end in our thinking. But God has neither. There has never been a time that God did not exist. That is comforting to the trusting soul to know God is eternal. God told Moses He was the “I AM” (Exodus 3:14). “I AM” is always present. God has been around awhile, and yet finite man often thinks he can get along without God. How stupid!
SECOND—THE SAFETY IN GOD
“God is thy refuge.” God is our protection. He is where we can seek refuge from the storms of life. But men are not interested in God. They drive Him out of society and then wonder why when the storms of life come, they have no place to go. Our refuge is in God not in some human agency or person, therefore let us seek Him
THIRD—THE SUPPORT FROM GOD
“Underneath are the everlasting arms” God undergirds us and sustains us in our darkest times. And His arms will not wear out when they hold us, for they are “everlasting arms.” His arms are like the wings of the eagle that swoops underneath the young eaglets to catch them when their strength wears out. His strength never wears out, He will always be our sure support.
FOURTH—THE STRENGTH OF GOD
“He shall thrust out the enemy from before thee.” Israel needed this encouraging word. They were about ready to conquer Canaan and it was most encouraging to know that God would help them to conquer the land which was filled with giants and rugged defenses. God’s power was greater than any enemy. He is omnipotent and no power of this world can match His great power. We think we are so powerful but God can crumble out greatest achievements into nothing if He so pleases.
FIFTH—THE STATUE FROM GOD
“Shall say, Destroy them.” God does not work for us in a way that would make us lazy or irresponsible. His miracles are not to do for us what we can do for ourselves. God thrust out the enemy, but He commands us to destroy them. Privilege does not lesson responsibility but only increases it. God is not in the entertainment business and we just the spectators. He has work for us to do.
