I have not sent them, declares the Lord, but they are prophesying falsely in my name, with the result that I will drive you out and you will perish, you and the prophets who are prophesying to you.
As we determined this morning, a false prophet is not of God. They have not been sent by God nor do they result in a person being turned to God.
They look the part by prophesying. The vocabulary sounds the same. They look the part. They even do it in the name of God. And yet the actual comment of what they are communicating is false.
The hearer has a certain responsibility here. The Lord says to Zedekiah here that the demise of those who follow the false prophets will be the same as those who are prophesying falsely. This is why testing the spirits is so important. What is even more interesting is that we are told specifically what these prophets were proclaiming and it does not sound ridiculous.
What are some false prophecies out there that come to your mind?
