This evening we are celebrating our seniors. There are a lot of things that could be said about the seniors, but tonight I just wanted to take a quick moment to speak about our legacy.
Every person in here is going to leave a legacy. Some good, some bad.
Lets see if you can name some of these people, and tell us what they are known for.
Martin Luther King Jr. - I have a dream speech, helping end segregation
Mother Theresa - selflessly giving of herself
Winston Churchill - Prime Minister of England helped win WW2
Now here is the thing, these are just ordinary people that did great things, all because of the choices that they made. However lets take a look at the other side.
OJ Simpson - Heisman trophy winner, killed his wife
Lance Armstrong - Tour De France winner, admitted to cheating
Hitler-
So we can see that our legacy is not always a great thing. So what makes the difference between us leaving a good legacy, and a bad legacy?
Choices
Choices
The choices that we make ultimately decide the kind of legacy that we will leave. None of these people that were mentioned were born any differently than you and I. The only thing that made them great or evil were the choices that were made.
This reminds me of a poem, most often read at funerals, but the name of the poem is the dash.
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.
For that dash represents all the time
that they spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved them
know what that little line is worth.
For it matters not, how much we own --
the cars...the house...the cash.
What matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.
Now this poem goes on, but what really sticks out, is that it doesnt matter when we are born, or when we die. It doesnt matter the money we have, or house we live in. What matters the most is how we spend our lives.
For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Consistency
Consistency
Not only do our choices help make up our legacy, but the thing that will cement your legacy is your consistency. If you go back and look at Lance Armstrong, and OJ Simpson, they would have been remembered for their greatness, but they were unable to stay consistent and maintain their legacy.
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.
So seniors as you are finishing up your careers as high school students and will be traveling all over the area. Some starting jobs, some staying local, some going away for college. Remember the choices that you make, make up who you are, and your consistency in those choices ultimately is how you will be remembered. As you go into your jobs, or colleges, remember the things you have learned here. God loves you, cares for you, and has the ultimate plan for your life. You just have to follow His design.
