**Ask the students “What do you all think a man’s purpose is?”
Ask them the “why” behind each one of their answers.
The reason that I am asking you all this question is because tonight, we are going to be discussing, what man’s purpose is.
Now it is clear that you are all destined to be men. At this present time you are teenagers, but one day you will all be men. And the kind of man you will be in very important.
In order for you all to become great men, according to God’s principles, you must first understand what your God given purpose is.
By your birth, God destined you all to be men, that means that the responsibility and purpose that God designed men to accomplish is placed on you.
You all must understand that you will decide whether or not you will fulfill your God-given purpose as a man.
Tonight we will discuss the purpose and responsibility of being a man, but it is you who will make the decision.
What is a Man’s Purpose?
What is a Man’s Purpose?
15 The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden,
17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.
23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
From this passage of Scripture we learn that when God created man, He gave him 3 purposes:
Submit
Lead
Love
Submit
Submit
When God created Adam we see that immediately he was submitted to what God wanted Him to do:
It says that right after God created Adam (who was the first man) He “put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” (Genesis 2:15)
Adam from the very beginning of His life was submitted to God.
Likewise we see that Jesus Christ (who was also a man) was submitted to God from the beginning of his life as well.
To be a man we must first submit before we do anything. Without submission we will not be lead properly.
Christ submitted to God, and so did Adam.
We also see here that Adam was working alongside God: He worked the garden, he names the animals and all of creation. (Genesis 2:15-20)
This indicates that God has a assignment for us as men to do.
10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Guys, God has a assignment for each one of you to accomplish. But just like Adam and just like Jesus, you will not be able to accomplish it unless you submit to God in everything you do.
What do I mean by submit?
Jesus explains this best:
24 Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
Basically, submission is denying yourself. It is denying relying on your own wisdom, strength, and plans.
When you deny yourself, everything that you do, think and say must be given to God. And this is not a one time thing. A man does not make a decision one day to live under God’s authority, and then two weeks later abandon it.
A true man keeps his commitment to God before he keeps any other commitments.
Think about Adam, what did he do wrong?
He disobeyed God and he ate the fruit. This means that he no longer submitted to God, he chose his own path.
But then when we look at Jesus, it is clear that He kept the commitment ot God His entire life.
Likewise guys, you must keep your commitment to God.
By looking at the life of Adam and Jesus, it is clear that if a man wants to call himself a man, he must first submit to God.
Lead
Lead
In the Genesis 2:16 we see that God gave Adam the command to not eat the fruit, and this was before He created woman.
The fact that God gave Adam (who was a man) the commandment before he created the woman, tells us that God expects a man to lead.
And the leading that a man is supposed to do is lead others to obey God’s commands.
Notice how God placed that responsibility on Adam. Before he created Eve, He gave him the commandment. It not recorded in the Bible that God gave Eve the commandment directly. He gave it to Adam.
But Adam could not lead Eve to obey God’s commandments unless he first obeyed them himself. This goes back to the submission we talked about earlier.
How many of you know what a hypocrite is?
Nobody wants to follow a hypocrite correct? They are untrustworthy.
Think about if Adam would have walked away when Eve tried to get him to eat the fruit that God told them not to. Who thinks that Eve would have done the same thing?
Guys, you will lead others best when you lead by example. Your words are important, but your actions do speak louder than your words.
What you do and how you act will tell more people about the kind of man you are and further it will tell them how serious you take your walk with God.
Guys, your assignment, no matter what career you are in, it is to lead others to Christ in some way. And your character, the things you do, people see and they notice. Whether you all are aware or not, you are building a reputation.
Who knows what a reputation is?
A reputation is what others think about you.
Guys, you can’t lead if your character is so poor that others don’t even care to follow you.
Before we talk about how to develop a good character I want to stress to you all exactly what you are to lead people to:
You are not called to lead them to follow “you” you are called to lead them to follow and obey God.
Remember that God gave Adam the commandment to follow Him, and expected him to lead Eve likewise.
When people see how you as a man live your life, it should be pointing people to Christ. They should be saying, I don’t know exactly what it is, but there is something different about that guy.
So how to we as men develop a good character?
16 But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Your flesh will not produce a godly character, but the Holy Spirit within you will. So in order to develop a godly character, you must walk by the Spirit that God has given you.
How do you do that?
You walk by the Spirit by spending time alone with God developing a relationship with Him, and further by reading the Word of God and obeying it. It is that simple. The more you do this, the more you will walk by the Spirit and develop a godly character. And the more you develop your godly character, the more others will see you actions and you will begin to lead others to follow and obey God.
Love
Love
The third and final purpose we see from the the book of Genesis is that a man is called to love.
Who is man to love and how is he to love?
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
God saw that man needed a woman to be with Him, and further it says concerning this woman that “a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife and they shall become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:24)
Therefore, we learn that a man is called to love a woman. Not a man, not a reptile, nor a transgender woman. But a biological woman.
But how is he to love this woman?
We see that in Genesis 2:21-22
21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.
God used man’s rib to create woman. Now God could have made woman the same way He made man, but He decided to do it differently, which means that God must be trying to teach us something by the way He created Eve.
Because God created Eve through man’s rib it is clear that more than likely God is teaching us that within a man’s life, His purpose is to sacrifice Himself for the ones he loves.
When we reflect on Jesus Words we see that He also agrees with this for he says: John 15:13
13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.
Furthermore, regarding marriage we learn that a husband is supposed to love his wide “as Christ loved the church, and gave Himself up for her” (Eph 5:25)
Guys from the very beginning of our creation, God called us to sacrifice ourselves for our wives and for those around us. To sum this up we could also say that as men we are called to be servants.
Servants to who?
Primarily our wives and then our neighbors. I once heard that a true king does not lead by seeing what he can take, but a true king leads by how much he can give.
Which leads me to my next and final point: How you treat your girlfriends is so important.
Also your intentions for dating in the first place is important.
If you are going to love someone the right way you are not going to use them to give yourself pleasure, and furthermore you are not going to see how happy they can make you. But you will do the exact opposite which is make sure that you do everything you can to serve them.
Guys you cannot serve a lady by watching pornography, and you do not serve a lady by sleeping with her.
This is a lie that society is trying to teach you all and it is a lie. Pornography is not based on serving others it is based on serving yourself and likewise having sex before marriage is not serving others it is serving yourself.
If you are seeking to serve others you are going to seek what is best for them. And if you are really seeking what is best for them you will ensure that everything in your relationship and how you are treating them lines up with God’s Word.
28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
You know what I gather from these passages? Boys watch porn and boys commit fornication and cheat on their woman.
If you guys want to be real men, you must stay away from these things. Even though it may be hard. If you want to fill your purpose of being a man you must.
Conclusion
Conclusion
So far tonight we have learned that within the Bible there are 3 purposes for men:
Submit
Lead
Love
Any questions?
