Fire of Devotion
Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
We all have allegiances to people or causes in our lives. When we are truly devoted, we have the proverbial fire within us. This fire can be contagious or it can be revolting depending on who and what the devotion is to.
Peter’s witness
He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
I. Peter’s Revelation (15-16)
a. Christ is asking the disciples “Who do you say I am?”
b. Peter replies “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God”
II. Peter’s Praise
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
a. The Father has revealed this to you…
III. Peter’s Rebuke
From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
a. Jesus tells of having to suffer many things in Jerusalem.
b. Peter says it will never happen & Jesus rebukes him.
i. Foot in mouth disease.
ii. So anxious and devotion so strong that he wants to protect his Savior.
Peter’s Words
Simon Peter said unto him, Lord, whither goest thou? Jesus answered him, Whither I go, thou canst not follow me now; but thou shalt follow me afterwards. Peter said unto him, Lord, why cannot I follow thee now? I will lay down my life for thy sake. Jesus answered him, Wilt thou lay down thy life for my sake? Verily, verily, I say unto thee, The cock shall not crow, till thou hast denied me thrice.
I. Feast of Passover
a. Jesus tells the disciples He is only going to be around a little while longer (31-35).
II. Faithful Servant
a. Peter pledges his life to die for Christ.
b. Christ knows that Peter is well meaning but tells what will happen.
i. The devotion is so strong that the disciples fail to see the mission of the Messiah.
ii. Jesus came to die for all mankind.
iii. This was His mission.
iv. Disciples looking for earthly kingdom not an eternal one.
III. Following failure
a. We have all said things we have fully intended and then circumstances changed.
b. No matter how far we may have moved from the Lord, He still loves us no matter what.
c. This is what we see in the life of Peter.
Peter’s Works
When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear. And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him. Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
I. Arrest in Gethsemane
a. Judas has betrayed Christ and comes with a multitude of armed forces to arrest Christ.
II. Armed to the Gills
a. The multitude was fully armed “clubs and swords”.
b. A typical Roman legion consisted of 600 troops.
c. This “multitude” was more than sufficient to take care of any problem that may arise in the arrest process.
III. Attempt to fight
a. Peter swings his sword to behead Malchus the servant of the High Priest and severs his ear.
b. “Think about the incident. There was an entire detachment of Roman soldiers there-perhaps numbering in the hundreds. What did Peter think he was going to do? Behead them all, one by one? Sometimes in Peter’s passion for taking the initiative, he overlooked the obvious big-picture realities” John McArthur, “Twelve Ordinary Men” (42).
IV. Another example is walking on water
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
a. Peter tells Christ to call to him and he would come.
b. Christ calls and Peter gets out of the boat on top of the water.
i. Never mind the wind and waves, Peter walks to Jesus on the water.
c. Don’t get too upset with Peter for sinking, how many of us would have gotten out of the boat in the first place?
Conclusion:
Whatever passion you once had for Christ, do you still have it? Do you want it back? There is only one way to get it back. Pray and seek Christ first and see His goodness and forgiveness in your life.
