The Mother Who Saved a Nation

You are a fortunate person if you had a great mother. You will live a blessed life due to the care and tender diligence of the selfless love of a godly mother. A priceless influence.

Jochebed is an example of such a woman.

“YHWH IS GLORY”
ד, SamP.M27 yūkābed, Sept. Ιωχαβεδ, n.f.; י׳ + כבד, “Yahweh is power”, König, cf. Akk. Adad-kabit, “Adad is powerful”, HBauer ZAW 51:92f :: Noth 111; Stamm Frauennamen 315; ? oldest name containing Yahweh, → Rowley Joseph 159f: mother of Moses and Aaron Ex 6:20 and Nu 26:59 (P !). †HALOT (ichabod ) the glory has left
Exodus 2:1-10

Her Family

Was a member of the tribe of Levi with her husband Amram (He married his father’s sister Ex 6:20)
Most men are what their mothers made them. The father is away from home all day, and has not half the influence over the children that the mother has.
Charles Spurgeon
Was a godly example in the home
Raised a daughter Miriam (the first Mary)
Later came Aaron
In between, in a most difficult time, came Moses, the deliverer

Her Convictions

Her situation - Pharaoh is killing all the male children. (not unlike with Jesus) Exodus 1:16 “and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.””
Wouldn’t bow to Pharaoh’s law
Hebrews 11:23 “By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king’s command.
Lived for God with courage and convictions. And taught her children to do so also
Hebrews 11:24 “By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter,”
Hebrews 11:25 “choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,”

Her Faith

Entered into the hall of faith
She square up against the world system of Egypt and won.
Proverbs 6:20–23 “My son, keep your father’s command, And do not forsake the law of your mother. Bind them continually upon your heart; Tie them around your neck. When you roam, they will lead you; When you sleep, they will keep you; And when you awake, they will speak with you. For the commandment is a lamp, And the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way of life,”
She was creative in navigating life’s requirements. Exodus 1:22 “So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.”” She “cast” Moses in the river sort of. In a basket, at the edge, in the reeds, where Pharaoh’s daughter came regularly to bathe. Quite a plan.
Once found by his “second mother” Jochebed became his nurse. She had the opportunity while she could to invest heavily in her son. Did she helped raise her son in the court as a nanny?

She Gave

She gave of her self - her life, values, history, faith she taught her son. She understood God’s hand on him and poured her life into him. 2 Timothy 3:14–15 “But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
A picture of God’s love to Israel Isaiah 66:12–13 “For thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, And the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing stream. Then you shall feed; On her sides shall you be carried, And be dandled (שׁעע) on her knees.” As one whom his mother comforts, So I will comfort you; And you shall be comforted in Jerusalem.””
She gave her son - For Israel, for the world. Did she know the details of what Moses would do? It was 400 years in Egypt…Genesis 15:13–14 (NKJV): 13 Then He said to Abram: “Know certainly that your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict them four hundred years. 14 And also the nation whom they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come out with great possessions. (Biblical theology says this was yet to be written, but the story was know.)

Her Reward

She raised a deliverer “MOSES” means to draw out. He was given that name by Pharaoh’s daughter. Drawn out of the river, but it also alludes to him drawing out Israel from Egypt.
Two mothers
A spiritual giver - Jochebed
A political leader trainer - Pharaoh’s daughter
Moses waited until he was 80 to stand before the burning bush.
You never know who you are raising.
Conclusion:
Aunts, sisters, grands, godmothers, spiritual influences in the church. All are examples of what we need in the church today.
