Intro:

Church Family how did we go from this?
To this?
What role models do our young girls have to look up too?
Has the church capitulated to this new standard?
Beyonce, Rihanna, and Megan have become the role models for the world and in the church.
In the absence of clearly delineated standards being taught at home and in the church we have let the world control the narrative of what a woman is supposed to look like so our young ladies, and some of our older ladies are confused.
Saints the Bible is replete with principles and examples of what a Godly Woman looks like.
Ladies our Woman’s Day sermon will be both challenging and uplifting. I am preaching out of concern of where our culture is going.

I. A Godly Woman understands where her true beauty lies

In a Article Written
Adolescent girls and women are most likely to have self-image concerns, many studies confirm. According to the National Organization for Women, NOW, a grassroots women’s movement dedicated to multi-issue and multi-strategy approaches to women’s rights, recent studies report that by age 13, 53% of girls say that they are “unhappy with their bodies.” This number grows to 78% by the time the girls reach 17. The same research shows that 50% of teens are self-conscious about themselves. This number drops to 28.7% in women 60 and over.
The NOW research finds that 45.5% of teenagers report considering cosmetic surgery while 43.7% of women over 60 report considering cosmetic surgery as well. Also concerning is the fact that 40% to 60% of elementary school girls are concerned about their weight or about becoming “too fat.” To back this claim, 60% of girls are dissatisfied with their body shape, with 66% reporting a desire to lose weight. NOW also reports that 46% of girls ages nine to 11 report being on diets “very often,” with 82% of those girls saying their families are often on diets too.
Stanford University and the University of Massachusetts have also found that 70% of college aged women feel worse about themselves and their body image after looking at and reading women’s magazines, according to NOW.
1 Peter 3:3–5 CSB
3 Don’t let your beauty consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes, 4 but rather what is inside the heart—the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight. 5 For in the past, the holy women who put their hope in God also adorned themselves in this way, submitting to their own husbands,
(EXP)(3) Peter starts this verse with a command principle “Do not let” Saints command principles are things we can build our lives on.
(3) Peter tells the women do not let your beauty consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes. Saints I read this scripture several times to try and get the syntax of the sentence. On the surface it seems as if Peter is saying a woman should not do anything to enhance her external beauty.
In the sentence “consist only” seems to be the most natural reading of this text. The NKJV picks up on this.
1 Peter 3:3 NKJV
3 Do not let your adornment be merely outward—arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel—
Ladies listen this text is a call to invest in the part of your human makeup that matters more. This is not a prohibition against caring for the external. It is call to something deeper.
God created us Body, Soul & Spirit. Ladies you must have the wisdom to know that true beauty starts inside out. A person cannot control their personal beauty that is determined by genetics. You make the best of what you have but everyone did not hit the genetics lottery. This is a call from Peter to invest in your Soul & Spirit first. This comes from pursuing the fruits of the spirit.
Ladies whether you have children or not. Our young ladies need classy examples of women dedicated to Soul work.
But we can teach our ladies the importance of personal character and holiness.
Peter helps us with this in (4) by pointing to the places that need to be developed.
1 Peter 3:4 CSB
4 but rather what is inside the heart—the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God’s sight.
(4) The Imperishable quality. Peter tells us what I am about to tell will transcend the grave. What I am about to tell you will live on after you die.
A gentle and quiet spirit
what does this not mean? what does it mean?
When our contemporary woman hears this they think of this image. Slaves to men’s desires, cooking, cleaning, and making babies.
Gentle: means “lowly or humble” having a spirit of humility. That word is the same word used in Matthew 11:29
Matthew 11:29 CSB
29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Jesus calls himself “lowly and humble” this is the same greek word from this verse in Peter. Jesus was strong, Jesus was a leader, Jesus spoke when he needed to, and he refrain from speaking when he needed too. Jesus submitted to the rules and laws of his time both from the Romans and the Religious Leaders who got on his nerves.
Quiet in Spirit-Notice this does not just say “quiet” it says quiet in spirit. This tells us Peter does not want the wives to just walk around the house with out uttering a word unless their husband gives them permission to speak.
Quiet-means well ordered and rest.
When used of her spirit. it carries the idea of having a spirit that is at rest. Well ordered. Walking in unison with the Spirit of God in their lives. Calm not volatile.
Saints this scripture is a perfect example of why you need to read scripture more than once, slowly and syntactically. It will keep you from reading your own presupposition(pre-determined conclusion) into the text.
Proverbs 31:30 CSB
30 Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord will be praised.
Listen to Solomon: Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting. The wisest man tells us as you get older youthful beauty will begin to fade. And the inner glow of character will shine brighter. This is what it means to have a quiet spirit. A quiet spirit is a woman that fears God.
Let’s keep building what else does a godly women need

II. A Godly Woman learns to guards her speech and emotions

1 Timothy 3:11 CSB
11 Wives, likewise, should be worthy of respect, not slanderers, self-controlled, faithful in everything.
Proverbs 19:13 CSB
13 A foolish son is his father’s ruin, and a wife’s nagging is an endless dripping.
Proverbs 21:9 CSB
9 Better to live on the corner of a roof than to share a house with a nagging wife.
Proverbs 21:19 CSB
19 Better to live in a wilderness than with a nagging and hot-tempered wife.
Proverbs 31:26 CSB
26 Her mouth speaks wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue.
(EXP)(11) Wives/Women, should be worthy of respect. Meaning they should have a well earned “respect” not just because of their age or gender.
“Not slanderers” -Diaobolos-this is one of the names of satan. This could read. “Not Little Devils” Slander is a tongue sin. it carries the idea of accuser. This is a women who can never to accountability for herself, spending her time accusing others of sins but not taking responsibility for her own.
Satan has not, will not ever take responsibility for his sin. Always looking for places to throw someone else under the bus. There will never be a time in Eternity when Satan will say “I have sinned against a holy and righteous God.” People don’t reform in Hell.
(13) A naggie women mouth is like a running facet
(9) it is better to make your bed on the roof of your house than live in the house with a naggie wife.
(19) It is better to live in a desert or wilderness without basic sustenance like water than to live with a naggie and hot tempered wife.
You see in this text this woman is both naggie and hot-tempered. She lacks basic control of her emotions. This leads to a contentious home. Ladies as a rule you are far more in touch with your emotions than men are. This can be an asset on occasion, but this can also destroy your home. Emotional women often make life decision out of pure emotions leading to destruction that men have to come clean up.
Ladies this is why its important that Christ needs to be the center of your life because he will show you how to balance your emotions with the truth of his word especially as it relates to your tongue.
What does the godly woman tongue do?
Proverbs 31:26 CSB
26 Her mouth speaks wisdom, and loving instruction is on her tongue.
(26) The Godly woman’s tongue builds up, makes wiser, leads to God, and she does it in a way that the receiver feels loved rather than an enemy.

III. A Godly Woman builds her home on Godly Precepts

2 Timothy 1:1–5 CSB
1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will, for the sake of the promise of life in Christ Jesus: 2 To Timothy, my dearly loved son. Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. 3 I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day. 4 Remembering your tears, I long to see you so that I may be filled with joy. 5 I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and now, I am convinced, is in you also.
2 Timothy 3:14–15 CSB
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you, 15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
(EXP)(1-5) Paul in his salutation in 2 Tim tells us who this letter is address too. He is address this letter to his Spiritual Son in the faith. Paul essentially adopted Timothy as a young disciple due to Timothy lack of male mentorship. Timothy father was Greek and pagan. Yet we see in this scripture something very interesting. Look at (5)
2 Timothy 1:5 CSB
5 I recall your sincere faith that first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and now, I am convinced, is in you also.
(EXP)(5) Paul talks about the sincere faith of Timothy’s grandmother Lois, and then Timothy mother Eunice, and then the sincere faith of Timothy. Saints that’s what legacy looks like. Timothy’s grandmother Lois made sure Eunice was discipled, then Lois made sure Timothy was discipled. They built their home’s around Christian principles.
Godly woman as singles, married, widowed, or divorced build their homes on the foundation of God’s word. Listen to Paul again talk about the Faith of Timothy.
2 Timothy 3:14–15 CSB
14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and firmly believed. You know those who taught you, 15 and you know that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.
When did Timothy formal education in the scriptures start?
(15) says “from infancy” This did not come from his father. It came from his Mother and Grandmother. Ladies there is great immeasurable value in building your home around the precepts of God. It will reverberate throughout many generation.
The mother’s heart is the child’s schoolroom.
Henry Ward Beecher
Listen to Solomon in Proverbs 14:1
Proverbs 14:1 CSB
1 Every wise woman builds her house, but a foolish one tears it down with her own hands.
(1) The Wise woman builds her house. Not remeber what Solomon said after tasting all the delicacies of life. As an ole man he said what is the conclusion of all of life “Fear God and keep his commandments” So when he says the wise woman builds her house he is not talking about the task and choirs she engages in everyday. Cooking, cleaning, picking up from school, and taking to music lesson. He is talking about the spiritual part of her job.
Ladies let this year be the year you dedicate to building your home on the foundation of Christ.
We are at a crisis as it relates to our young women. They need examples. They need a Lois, and Eunice to follow.
849If a mother’s prayers do not bring us to Christ, they are like drops of oil dropped into the flames of hell that will make them burn more fiercely on the soul forever and ever. Take heed of rushing to perdition over your mother’s prayers.—3.103
Charles Spurgeon
