Salt & Light | Matthew 5:13-16 | Pastor Jose Brevil

All right. So on this Mother's Day, we're going to look at a very famous passage that most of us have heard before or even memorized but as this is a familiar passage, let us not to let familiarity breeds contempt. So as you hear let's we have some very important lessons to learn from this text. So I'm going to skip over verse 12 12 because I recently taught on the Beatitudes about the couple months ago. So we just finished chapter for last week. So if you want to learn about the Beatitudes the attitudes that ought to be in you, so just go on our YouTube page. You should be able to find the Recording this morning. We're going to focus on 13 to 16. But so your dad left out. So we're going to also read verse 1 to 12 as well. So

Let's read together. So we getting here actually my one of the very interesting place in Scripture that we called The Sermon on the Mount in chapter 5 6 and 7. We recorded sermon there that was given by none other than Jesus Christ. So in this sermon Jesus address a quite a lot of issues of things of life that are relevant to us and it is Jesus is teaching us about how the kingdom of God works. Remember the kingdom of life is a life that is lived under God. So when we decide to live under God's rule, so we living the kingdom life. So The Sermon on the Mount is really a sermon about that Kingdom Life. And it opens up with the Beatitudes in 5:1 to 16. So seeing the crowds he went up on the mountains and when he set down his disciples came to him talkin about Jesus. and he opened his mouth and taught them saying blessed are those who mourn for they are blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. So hear when talking about poor in spirit, that means those who know and realize their need for God all of us have a need for God lazy Pascal said there is a god-shaped void in all of our heart that only God can feel if you feel like you're going through life and never satisfied and you always looking for something to fill that void in your life. That's what you need. You need to become poor in spirit realizing that a you have a need for God then Jesus move to the second beatitude. It says blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted? So happy are those who? Are unhappy with our moon Lord says they shall be comforted. But that's why we will be comforted by him. That's what she's has promised. It says those who are afflicted. He says he will bless them in and when it talks about morning also is is that's also a lot of us don't take send a serious as we ought to and I and often we don't mourn over our sin. So here in the Beatitudes is telling us 81 attitude that needs to be in us also, it's still mourn over our sin. We don't toy with sin like, oh, it's not a big deal God's grace claiming God's grace over. Everything is God's grace is available to all of us, but God's grace should never be taken for granted. So that means when we falter we need to mourn over our sin, then it goes on and says blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth the me Cordello's who are a humble are the meek or those who exercised power under control? I have the power to do this, but I'm choosing not to you being mean to me. I can be mean back to you. But I'm choosing to be make although I can choose not to been over six. It says blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness for days shall be satisfied. So Jesus is saying the more and more you are becoming more like me your hunger and thirst for what is right for justice. It says you will be satisfied when Jesus says a when you do the right thing. You will be blessed and then seven moves and says blessed are the merciful for they shall receive Mercy in Matthew 6 and says, why should God do to you what you're not willing to do for others. So if you are a person would do that like to forgive giving others a mercy here is saying that you will not receive Mercy. If you don't give a mercy to the blessed are the merciful for they shall receive mercy. And what's a blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God. So God takes it seriously that we walk with him that our hearts are pure land walking with him and inverse night. It says blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God, you know, you don't always have to relock the retaliate leave a peaceful life people will see you and see that you really belong to God verse that says blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake For theirs is the kingdom of God how many of you like this one blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake for theirs is the kingdom of God. So hear Jesus preacher controversial sermon, this is Counter Culture all the things the attitudes that Jesus called all of us to have here. They are not things that we want to be happy about but hear Jesus say A you are blessed. If you are persecuted for righteousness sake and Jesus say a the kingdom of God belongs to you then invoice 11. It says blessed. Are you when others revile you and persecute you and other all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account? It says rejoice and be glad for your reward is great in heaven for day persecuted the prophets who were before you to hear it say blessed. Are you when others revile you that's when people bully you do wrong things against you but God says hey. Rejoice and be glad when things don't go your way and Jesus say and you in good company, you are not the only one that has been persecuted for their profits also have been persecuted. And now that leads us to our message for today Salt and Light Salt and Light in Matthew Chapter 5 as we look at the verse 13 to 14. So in Matthew 5 verse 13 to 16, it says you are the salt of the earth. But if so has lost in space how shall this saltiness be restoring? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown. out and shrimp boil under people's feet You are the light of the world is City set on a hill cannot be hid in no do people light a lamp and put it under a basket but understand and it gives light to all in the house in the same way. Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven. So here's our message in one sentence. The world is a mess. It means a message and a messenger and you are that messenger. The world is a mess. It means a message and a messenger and you are that messenger father as we study your word now teaches what we need to learn from this on how we can be salt and lights in our community and everywhere we go. Be with us. Now as we study your word in Jesus name we pray. Amen. Amen. So Salt and Light, Jesus calls you and Jesus calls me as long as we believe in him. Jesus says a we need to be Salt and Light. What is the big deal about salt? See you in today's culture when we talked about salt. Usually, it feels like it's a bad thing for you, right? I don't take too much solid because it's going to raise your blood pressure

you think we look at solved the way we talked about salt if it's as if salt has no value because it is so so available to us. But in the days of the Bible in the Bible was written small was a great commodity and actually solved was being used just like money like to exchange is you getting it. It's kind of like 8, I'll give you a call if you give me this and that being said that the word salary comes from the word salt ever heard people say a are you worth your salt sea salt was very important in those days. And today we may not see the value of Soul because it's still available to us. And then we just have plenty we just use it without even thinking about it. I need some self-help. There's not in the house so I can run to Walmart. I'll find plenty. But the salt was a big deal in those days because salt was very valuable. Roman soldiers would be paid with salt and how important the salt wasn't today, even when we don't may not realize the value or salt but everyday all of us consume, so And without salt we would not be able to enjoy our food the way that we do. So three to four things about Salt the first thing that salt does salt add Flavours salt add flavor. So if you have a food when you add some salt to it, what does it do?

And it tastes better. Those of us who have taken too much salt before and now we have to cut down on salt.

We wish that we probably did last so now we can still enjoy our food but as a result of consuming too much before now we got to cut down on this also that our blood pressure doesn't go to High because too much of anything is a problem. We need salt in our body, you know, it's sodium chloride in our body we need salt. Sea salt as flavored if you have some rice you put some salt on it the now how do we describe the way do we say that the salt is rice eat or we say that this price could be salty or than enough. So the present now it becomes the defining thing in that if you put some salt on carrots. Do you say that the character do you say that the salt is Cara D. We say that the carrots are salty. You see when salt is present then now salt Define. What you have and that's what when Jesus says you are the salt of the earth. That means like wherever you go you need to stand out because when you put that salt in that food it stands out. And we all know that you can put everything in the food, but you know that there's something that's missing when there's no salt. Can you put a little salt in add flavor so salt as flavor? Not only salt adds flavor salt also preserves. And again today our fridge are so available. Our freezers are so available. We don't understand that. We don't look at solved as preservative. But in the old days people did not have fridge that did not have freezers the win they had meat. To preserve that meet what did they do? They put salt in it. It has even been said that when the baby was born in those old days. They would even wash them with salt. Sea salt is a preservative. It purifies. It cleans salt is very important. So salt not only adds flavor but salt preserve can see in those days when Jesus was teaching that the people could really relate to him because what would you do without salt all your meat will be decaying you would not be able to preserve anyting. sea salt preserve salt at flavors and the other thing about salt is that salt creates self create thirst. Define I have been told OK Google to the bar. They usually put some nuts there and they usually very salty anybody knows about that know are you don't want to acknowledge all the pic you only one on this bus?

They said they would usually put nuts there and they usually very salty. Why do they do that? To Creator so that you can buy as many drinks as you can because once I take that little nuts to drink I need to drink and then you see the nuts are free. But is it really free or is it a marketing strategy? Cease all creators and good business owners will have bars knows that you put some nuts there and all of a sudden now the tab will be much bigger because salt create thirst. And give the thing about salt and think that that we don't pay attention is that salt also stings in those old days all so I don't know how much it is in medicine today, but when somebody would would hurt also they would put salt on that one. And when you put salt on that one what happened it will sting it will B. But is that good? Yeah, temporary hurts for long-term results because when you put that solve it will make sure that that one does not get infected. Is he pretty much in a nutshell salt makes things better salt make things better. So that's why Jesus says As Believers we need to be salt of the earth. So that means we need to add flavor to the world. We need to help reserving a decaying world and we need to create thirst in people for what we have. And sometimes we have to tell the truth that will sometimes sting and bites. And that's why you will see that sometimes people don't like Christians around them because the word of God not only come for his but also the word of God and I'm only adds flavor with reserved and create starts with the word of God also stings when there are wounds we have to put that salt in it. Not only Jesus says we need to be salt of the earth. But he also says we need to be light of the world and lied. What does Dwight do for us as we all know light shines because of light we can see clearly if it is dark you turn on a light and all of a sudden now you can see light exposes. What's hidden? Then Jesus says in the same way that he calls us to be salt. But he's also calling us to be like you saying that we need to shine. We need to help others see clearly and we need to expose. What is hidden. So really I want to share three actually for implications on what this means to be Salt and Light in our culture today. And the first implication for us is that our lives must be attractive to the world Our Lives must be attractive to the world because remember salt create. So as a Believer when you live your life as you go out into the world when people look at your life, you must be attractive that when did look at your life and they can say at 8. I want what you have. I want what you have unbelievers our lives must be attractive because that's what we see in verse 13, you are the salt of the earth, but it's salt has lost its taste how Charlotte's saltiness be restored. If you are in that salty, I know today somebody's L you salty. It's not a good thing. Okay, okay, but you need to have some salt in you it says it is no longer good for anything except to be throwing and trampled on their people's feet. So as Christians if our lives are not attractive Jesus says it is worth less. There was no mean forward if our life is not attractive that people don't see us as people was adding flavor to their lives that we are not creating thirst for people to have what we have Jesus the Same maybe with lust our salt and hear Jesus is not talking about salvation, but it's just now you are not useful to the kingdom cuz it says you are the salt of the earth. If you are not a helping the making life better. You lost your taste and Jesus says how she'll is salting. That's be restored. Jesus says it's no longer good for anything. CC that's why Christians can that toy with send that's why Christians have to live holy lives. That's why Christians have to live like God has design us to live. That's why Christians have to be the light in the world. That's where Christians have to always be on their best because Jesus calls us to be soft. Jesus calls us to add flavor to life so that we can be attractive just like everybody wants to get their food. They want to put a little salt in their favor flavor is like saying, oh man, it's like when they're together and because of what they stand for. Jesus calls has to be salt. He wants us to live lives that are attractive to others if everybody look at your I don't want what you have. There is a problem but people need to look at your life and say I want what you have because I see you live with contentment. I see you growing. I see you loving others as see you caring for others. I see you bringing life into others. Not only that we need to be attractive but it says our message is the preservative that our Ducane world needs. So as Christians we need to act as preservatives to the culture with the word of God. That's what saving the world. That's why the Bible says when the Rapture happens when all the Christians are taken away out of this world. The Bible says it will be total chaos here. Because what happened all the preservatives have been taken away see the way the world is is just like an airplane that is about to crash. And we are there parachutes in the culture that is helping people to get out and to get away because eventually the plane will crash that's the world that we live in it's a decaying world is getting worse and worse. But because Christians are still living in the world living as ambassadors. We are helping to preserve the world knows a why do people hate Christians so much because all the hospitals most of the hospital systems was built on the foundation of the Gospel is Church's a building hospital. That's why they are called method is there called Presbyterian because the church was living as lie to the church was living a salt and we are helping to heal the sake and as you see when there's a problem in the world somewhere everybody's running to get out but it's missionaries moving and going to help. You see when things are decaying somewhere. God says you are the preservative because you have the gospel message and the gospel message is life-giving. It is transforming. That's what he says. Our message is the preservative to you our decaying world. That's why we got to share the gospel with as many people we come in contact with so that they are not the king with the world but instead were bringing life to them with the gospel. We are the preservative in the culture verse 13 again says you are the salt of the earth if salt has lost its taste how Charlotte's Ultimus be restored Jesus as a shooting at a live at Salt because otherwise you are just like the world you would be good for anything except to be thrown out and Trampled Under people's feet. So Jesus is calling us a don't just add flavor to the world. But you are here you are preserving the world. That's why the world still exist. Because without that everything will crumble so some of you were saying Okay, Christian is do so much good in the world, but why do so many people are so opposed to the gospel? It's not just bad Christians, but people are so opposed to the gospel because it is true because true a brings out things in people that they don't want to see because we are the light of the world light exposes. What is it in and remember John the Baptist while the king put him in jail, and he eventually chop his head off because he spoke truth in the culture because the king had taken his brother's wife as his wife. And when John spoke about that, it says a this is not a right for you to take your brother's wife. But he put him in jail and killed him is he as we serve as preservative to the world as we are sharing the gospel. Some people will not like it because salt stings stalled B Because when we share the gospel people don't want to stop doing what they doing and they want a license to do what they want to do. See that's why you see in the culture any thing that people want to do the advocate for a law, even though it is morally wrong. But once we have a love, we make it legal then now that takes away some of the shame and they tried to shame you see there are some things in the culture. You cannot even talk about them when he's driving at the bank. Why did they try to do they try to shame you can't believe we still believe that in 2024 because they have no argument because they know what they're doing shameful it is wrong it will destroy but now the only line is that oh, I can't believe you still believe that in 2024. It's those Christians. They know we are right. And that's why we gotta preserve the culture and that's why we have to speak truth to the culture because when somebody has a wound you're done just a little pretty. Oh, it's okay if you don't do anything about it and don't feel that ruin is infected and then he kills them. But was it needed was a dose of Truth putting a little salt on that room, even though it bite it stings, but we know eventually it will be good for them because they will be healed. But now we're leaving a culture. We want everything to go but we know it's not true. We know it will eventually destroy with the way that people live. But that's how people choose to live. The Bible says that we are the salt of the world. We are the preservative even when it stings. We still got to speak the truth. Not only that we need to add flavor. When you to be attractive to the world. We need to act as preservative in the world with the gospel message, but our faith must be lived out publicly. Our faith can be a secret and a lot of us are secret agent Christians and God is calling us a Are you salty? Is there any salt in you or are you only good to be trampled on the food? That means you are of no use to the kingdom of God and God is saying hey your face needs to be live out in the open. It needs to be lived out in the market place because when you have a light, what does the LIE do the light shines the light help you see the light exposes? What is hidden? Because it says you are the light of the world a city set on a hill cannot be hid in no do people lie down lamp and put it under a basket but on a stead it gives light to all the house still got to pay if your faith is private. What kind of faith is that? Or maybe you don't have that Faith at all. Because it says your faith needs to be out cuz when you have a life the lights means to shine the light stands out. Jesus says you are the light of the world just like Jesus says in John 8-12. It says I am the light of the world. Jesus is saying that you are little lights how so Jesus is like the sun and we are like the stars and the moon where we reflect his life in the culture. So as Jesus is showing as the light of the world. Jesus is calling us to shine in the world just like he is shining it says we are the light of the world city set on a hill cannot be hid another people light a lamp and put it under a basket but on a stand and it gives light to all in the If you are a Christian and nobody knows about it, you are at work. Nobody knows that you were Christian. Maybe you are not maybe you just religious you just go to church and just get your check mark, but I have to work because or maybe you don't want to say because you're not the living like a lights because you are not living like salt because it's very embarrassing to say that you are a Christian but you are very hot-tempered at work. You are the one that just never does. What what what what what cause for you to do at work if you are not a good team player. You don't add value to the team then all of it. Then you should not be saying that you're Christian. See but Jesus says a you are the light of the world a city set on a hill cannot be hid in Northern people light 11 put it on their basket, but put it on a stand and it gives life to all in the house with Jesus says your faith needs to be in the marketplace. Everybody needs to know. Will you roll with I was with Jesus? I am a Christian everybody needs to know that you see that's why we have to share the gospel with everybody we come in contact with Jesus says I am the light of the world who ever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. You are a light and God calls. You live it out Daniel 12 verse 3. That's where we have to share the gospel. Look at what it says in those who are wise shall Read it with me. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightest of the sky above and those who turn may need to righteousness like the stars forever and ever so Jesus say if you not living as lie to you or not. Weis Go to read it again. And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above. shark I just a little light but Meg lights and do was return may need to righteousness. That means you share the gospel with somebody you turn them to Christ and those return may need to righteousness like stars forever and ever. That's what Roman says how beautiful are the feet of those who bring Good Tidings. That means bring good news to share the gospel with others James 5:20 says let him know that whoever brings back a sinner from his wandering will save his soul from F and will cover a multitude of sins. That's why we have to shine brightly and lastly. The way we live matters the way we live matters such as Christians, we need to live attractive lives. So that others can see as Christians. We are preservative in a decaying world and as Christians, I would let our faith must be lived out publicly should not be a secret and lastly the way we live matters tremendously in verse 16. It says in the same way let your light shine before others. Why? So that they may see your good works. Do you have good works to show? Or do you have nothing to show up for your face? Are you like that salt that has lost its saltiness that only good to be trampled underfoot?

Just by the way, you live matters because it says in the same way let your light. Shine before others so that they may see your good works you living for God. Missing your good works and then they will give glory to your for they will make your father now and they will make God known when they see you. Be more god-like your father, which is in heaven Ephesians. 2:10 says a source of All Stars by Grace we have been saved if I stop by a work it is a gift from God. But once we are safe, we have received a gift of Grace then it says in verse then we are his workmanship. That means we need to go to work created in Christ Jesus for Good works. See God leaves you here after you were safe so that you can bring good works into the world because God says you are an ambassador for Christ. Otherwise, it should take you home. If you know, I'm relieving like ambassador's right? You don't like that God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them. I love 1st Corinthians 9. verse 19 to 22 since what do I am free from all I have made myself a servant to all that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became. As a Jew in order to win juice to those under the law. I became as one under the law do not being myself under the law that I might win those under the law to do is outside. The law. I became as one outside the Lord not being outside the law of God, but under the law of Christ that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak. That I might win the week and you got to love this year. Paul says I have become all things to all people. By all means I might save some Paul's mission was to save as many people as he can pose mission was to live as much as Salt and Light as occurred in the world Paul's mission was to add flavor to the world as much as it could Paul's mission was to preserve a decaying World falls mission was to create terse in others. Paul's mission was to be truthful and still speak the truth. Even when it bites beshear poll wanted to shine as light and Paul says I have become all things to all people that by all means I might think so. Is that your life's mission? 2 as you are on your way to heaven. Is it your life mission to take as many people as you can with you to heaven. Because this is the devil's mission is Mission. He's going down to Hell and he wants to take as many people as it can down with him. But God puts us here as Ambassador in this world to rescue as many people who are heading down to hell but instead heading up to heaven with us. That's why our mission is great. When Jesus says that we are the Salt and Light in our culture. It has great implication and it is much need for on this Mother's Day the best and most important place to shine as mothers. Is in your home and raising your kids. We have a parent to a crisis in our world today where kids are raising themself, but on this Mother's Day the call for Isis. I just to be Salt and Light in the world those of you warm others is to be solved in line and your home to really live the Christian Life to be salt to your children to add good flavor to them to prepare them for what is important. We live in a world now, we're kids do not know how to deal with failure if they fail at anything then they ready to lose their minds and then we we want to give everybody a prize, you know, when they are doing competitive things like competitive Sports. How is that helping kids? They need to know there's somebody work harder than you they'd be rewarded and as parents we need to learn as we teaching them as they are at home and to grow up. We need to raise them up and that letting the kids raising themselves or parenting us and his mother's the best way you could do that really is to set good example for your children. What God's word says live it out and as you live it out before them. More is cut then what is taught as you living the Christian Life in front of your children, they are catching it up and they are doing what you do and some of you are surprised when you see your kids as they're growing up and then they just becoming more like you. See you there was a song about Cats in the Cradle. There was a son as he was growing up. He always wanted his father's attention. I should have saved that for Father's Day always wanted his father's attention. But the father always say there was a plane to catch she was a singer famous singer, but he had to go do another concert but never had time for the Sun and I didn't go on the kid go 5:10, but Dan has keep growing. You know, I always tell the kids, you know, you don't that's planes to catch. I got to go to work. I got to do this. I got to do that. I got to be out of town again, but but but but we'll get together then when I come back son, and then and then we we could do great things together. And the son grew up to be just like his dad. And as he grew up now the dad retired and wanted to spend time with his son the sun. Just thought I'd love to spend some time with you, but I got to go to work. I got this trip that I have to plan. I have to go I have to do this and I have to do that. And on till later the father realized, huh? I realized my son just grew up to be just like me because they were planes to catch had to do this how to do that. I have to do that but never spent time with that child and the child will grow up to be just like you and a lot of us were surprised the things that our kids do more is cut then is Tut's mother's I know I give you a father's example, but if you never read your Bible and your kids never see you read your Bible, what do you think's going to happen? They're not going to read the Bible. It doesn't matter. How many times you ask them to read their Bible? You see anything you you Garden add anything you want to seeing your kids you need to start practicing it now so that they see it in you again more is caught then. What is. Cuz your kids will grow up and be just like who? Bike you if you didn't put your foot down they going to go out and embarrass you because the Bible says the foolish son is brings shame to his mother and a lot of parents today are leaving with much shame because the never corrected their kids at home and when they go out in the public and they are a shame. Because you didn't do the work that you needed to do at home. So how can you do that said good example to be the parent that the kids desperately need today. A lot of kids are the ones parenting their parents today? Cuz they telling the parents what to do, but God put you as a parent so that you can be a parent a parent decides what goes into the home and mother's got two calls. You you tell your kids what to do. Not your kids telling you what to do. You tell them what they going to do not what they're going to tell you to do you tell them what to do God puts you in their life so that you can teach them what is good so that they can do it and you can teach them what is bad so they do not You have influence God puts you in your kid's life so that you can be a blessing to them and parent them and parent them. Well one thing kids mean today is stability always provide stability in your home for your kids will live in a very unstable world. But if we are to be Salt and Light in our home will provide a very stable home for our kids so that they will be out in the world and be very confident when somebody is bullying them and saying mean things questioning but make them question their identity, but they can remember that my mother taught me some 139 I am fearfully and wonderfully made in God's eyes so I don't care what you say, but I know who I am because I am made in God's image. See when we provide a stable environment for kids. They live very securely and live very confident. in life C in a nutshell God is calling us to be salt and life in our decaying world. This guy called us that we will be perfect. Then we will always have it, right. Some of us will do everything that we know to do but some things are out of our control, but we never want to be the one that didn't do our parts. So when kids do not do what they supposed to do, but we can live with a clear conscience a I did what God has called me to do. I have tied them. I will continue to pray for them even though right now they may not be why they want to be but I believe in the power of prayer because the Bible says the prayer of a righteous person has great power. So as you are a Christian you are a follower of Christ you are a righteous person. So if Things are not where they need to be right now. You get on your knees you pray and you pray because the Bible says in Philippians 1:6, he will has begun a good work in me will bring it to completion the same thing for our kids. God will has began a good work in them will bring it to completion and we going to commit them to prayer. So in a nutshell be the salt and light that is needed in our culture today and I want to end my reading to you the scripture in what we called the message paraphrase translation. It goes like this. Let me tell you why you are here. That's your purpose your purpose here. It says you are here to be salt seasoning that brings out the god flavors of this Earth. If you lose your saltiness how will people taste godliness have you lost your usefulness?

And we'll end up in the garbage. Are you awake? Here's another way to put it. You're here to be lights bringing out the god colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept we're going public with this as public as a city on a hill if I make you light bearers you don't think I'm going to hide you under a bucket. Do you? I am putting you on a light stand now that I've put you there on a Hilltop on a light stand. shein

keep open house be generous with your lies by opening up to others your prompt people to open up. with God Does generous Father in heaven? Father help us to be Salt and Light in our culture today. Help us father. To live out as Salt and Light maybe remember Lord God we need to live attractive lives. that others want

that we would create Tarson others. You would help to preserve our culture.

Help us Lord. God to add good flavors into our world today.

We magnify the Lord be glorified. Opposed to walk according to your ways and not according to hours. The father help us to be the salt. in the light That we need to be. in our culture today
