Romans 16:13 (ESV) Greet Rufus, chosen in the Lord; also his mother, who has been a mother to me as well. Luke 1:43 (ESV) And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? Luke 8:19–21 (ESV) Then his mother and his brothers came to him, but they could not reach him because of the crowd. 20And he was told, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, desiring to see you.” 21But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” Luke 11:27–28 (ESV) As he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which 28 you nursed!” But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 12:51-53 (ESV) Do you think that I [Jesus] have come to give peace 52 on earth? No, I tell you, but rather division. For from now on in one house there will be five divided, 53 three against two and two against three. They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against her daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.” Luke 14:25–27 (ESV) Now great crowds accompanied him, and he 26 turned and said to them, “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be 27 my disciple. Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Matthew 19:27-29a (ESV) Then Peter said in reply, “See, we have left everything 28 and followed you. What then will we have?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of Man will sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, 29 judging the twelve tribes of Israel. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake . . . b Matthew 19:29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold and will inherit eternal life. Luke 8:1–3 (ESV) Soon afterward he went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom 2 of God. And the twelve were with him, and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary, called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3and Joanna, the wife of Chuza, Herod’s household manager, and Susanna, and many others, who provided for them [or “him”] out of their means. Matthew 27:55 (ESV) There were also many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus 56 from Galilee, ministering to him, among whom were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph and the mother of the sons of Zebedee. Luke 8:21 (ESV) But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God . . .” Luke 8:21 (ESV) But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are those who hear the word of God and do it.” Titus 2:3–5 (ESV) Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. 4 They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, 5to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Luke 2:48-50 (ESV) And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great 49 distress.” And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be 50 in my Father’s house?” And they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. Proverbs 31:26 (ESV) She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. John 2:1–5 (ESV) On the third day there was a wedding at Cana in 2 Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus also 3 was invited to the wedding with his disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, 4 “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My 5 hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” Matthew 7:6 (ESV) “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.” Proverbs 20:12 (ESV) The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both.
