Who is Timothy?
Who is Timothy?
Ephesus planted.
Growing church, many saved, cultural shift takes place.
Paul write Timothy to give instructions for two things...
His calling
His duties
These instructions cover...
Sound Doctrine, Pastoral Leadership, Preeminence of Jesus the Messiah, priorities for Pastors, and dignity of church members.
Timothy
A young man who responded to Christ’s call to help build His church.
Brought up in a religious home, led to faith by Paul.
Born of a mixed marriage (Jew and Gentile)
Local church recognized his gifting’s and set him a part, joining Paul’s mission team
Because of age, he fought discouragement.
We see later in this book that Timothy was fighting some sort of physical battle as well...
He also was fighting tension with church members who didn’t respect him.

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by command of God our Savior and of Christ Jesus our hope,
2 To Timothy, my true child in the faith:
Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, 4 nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. 5 The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. 6 Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, 7 desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.
8 Now we know that the law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 understanding this, that the law is not laid down for the just but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who strike their fathers and mothers, for murderers, 10 the sexually immoral, men who practice homosexuality, enslavers, liars, perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound doctrine, 11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
What is the role of the pastor?
What is the role of the church?
Two foundational roles of pastor are...
Spiritual oversight and instruction.
There were teachers rising up in the church in Ephesus… They were using the Old Testament and the law to manufacture new doctrines, leading people away from the essence of the gospel.
They were causing division in the church, creating hypocrites, and causing all sorts of problems.
Grace was essentially being taken off the table and the attention was being turned toward the legality of the law, creating a culture of legalism.
Rules and regulations enable a person to appear holy without really changing their heart...
What is something you have heard that is heretical or false teachings OR what is something you have heard that you may not be sure if it is truth or not?
11 in accordance with the gospel of the glory of the blessed God with which I have been entrusted.
Paul is passionate about this gospel.
It fuels and defines everything he does…
In fact, he becomes so passionate about the redirection of the church in Ephesus that he shares the impact of the gospel in his own life… again.
12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service, 13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief, 14 and the grace of our Lord overflowed for me with the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. 15 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the foremost. 16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
Pauls Testimony
Pauls Testimony
Who did Paul used to be?
Who did Paul used to be?
Who was Paul?
13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,
Blasphemer, persecutor, insolent (violent) opponent.
The worst of the worst in terms of neglecting the crucified and risen savior.
He may have been religious, but he surely wasn’t saved.
How was Paul saved?
13 though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent.
Road to Damascus in Acts 9
Paul’s conversion… Paul’s transformation.
How was Paul Changed?
12 I thank him who has given me strength, Christ Jesus our Lord, because he judged me faithful, appointing me to his service,
16 But I received mercy for this reason, that in me, as the foremost, Jesus Christ might display his perfect patience as an example to those who were to believe in him for eternal life.
Paul not only became a minister of the gospel, but he also became and example of it to others...
I love how he ends this chapter with a doxology like praise… every section of 1 Timothy ends with this btw.
17 To the King of the ages, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.
After Paul’s Testimony moment, he ends the chapter with a beautiful challenge.
18 This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, 20 among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter One: Stay on the Job (1 Timothy 1)
The soldier’s task is to “please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier” (2 Tim. 2:4), and not to please himself.
Paul is urging Timothy not just to proclaim the good faith with his lips, but to practice it as well.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter One: Stay on the Job (1 Timothy 1)
One man said of his hypocritical pastor, “He is such a good preacher, he should never get out of the pulpit; but he is such a poor Christian, he should never get into the pulpit!”
What do you think he is referring to when he says, “making a shipwreck of their faith?”
*Consider context
They are habitually sinning, rejecting the faith they claim as their own.
How do we get to a point where we convince ourselves of something that is not of biblical truth?
Getting a bit tipsey won’t hurt me or anyone else.
Permissing this thread of instagram or tiktok reels isn’t bad, she isn’t fully naked.
I don’t have to express love or care for someone but that doesn’t mean I hate them or look down upon them.
Only God can judge me.
I’ll just “do me.”
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter One: Stay on the Job (1 Timothy 1)
Bad doctrine usually starts with bad conduct, and usually with secret sin.
Let me speak to pastors and elders here, because Paul is talking to Timothy in this book, not you and me… although God can surely reveal truth to us through this enlightened conversations.
I have seen too many men in the church offer themselves permission to do things that require them to drop their guard because, in their poor assumption, their character can’t be questioned do to the role they play among people.
*Student pastor and 19 year old intern.
Timothy’s job was to win the lost, teach the saved, and defend the faith.
Any task that did not relate to these ministries would have been abandoned.
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter One: Stay on the Job (1 Timothy 1)
One reason some local churches are having problems is that the pastors and spiritual leaders are involved in too many extracurricular activities and are not doing the tasks God has called them to do.
