Old Testament Survey- Week 1- God’s Word Is Truth

Proverbs 1:7 ESV
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction.
Proverbs 4:13 ESV
Keep hold of instruction; do not let go; guard her, for she is your life.
Instruction from Yaweh is life.
Proverbs 12:1 ESV
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.
To get knowledge takes effort and discipline.
What is reproof? What does it have to with discipline and knowledge?
Chicken example- to be shown where we are wrong in our thinking, especially when it comes to a Holy God.
Hating correction makes you STUPID (like a beast/ cow chewing the cud).
1 Kings 8:56 ESV
“Blessed be the Lord who has given rest to his people Israel, according to all that he promised. Not one word has failed of all his good promise, which he spoke by Moses his servant.
Part of King Solomons prayer when he finished building the temple for God.
Read Genesis 1 and Genesis 2- these are foundational to a lot of what we believe.
When you think of the word “god” or “God”, what comes to mind?
“god” = Idol
“God” = Yahweh
When you think of the word “bible” what comes to mind?
HISstory
Greek word = bibulous which means book
Using the Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary, write out the definitions on the following terms:
Bible- THE BOOK, by way of eminence; the sacred volume, in which are contained the revelations of God, the principles of Christian faith, and the rules of practice. It consists of two parts, called the Old and New Testaments.
Testament (use definition 2)- The name of each general division of the canonical books of the sacred Scriptures; as the Old Testament; the New testament The name is equivalent to covenant, and in our use of it, we apply it to the books which contain the old and new dispensations; that of Moses, and that of Jesus Christ.
Sufficient (use definition 1)-Qualified; competent; possessing adequate talents or accomplishments; as a man sufficient for an office.
We do not need anything else, nothing extra
Infallible- Not fallible; not capable of erring; entirely exempt from liability to mistake; applied to persons. No man is infallible; to be infallible is the prerogative of God only.
Covenant (read them all, but write out definition 3)- In theology, the covenant of works, is that implied in the commands, prohibitions, and promises of God; the promise of God to man, that mans perfect obedience should entitle him to happiness. This do, and live; that do, and die.
“The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, depends NOT upon the testimony of any man or church, but wholly upon God (who is truth itself), who is the author of it. Therefore, the Scripture is to be recieved (believed) because it is the Word of God.” (1689 London Baptist Statement of Faith)
5. Do you believe the above statement? Read the following Scriptures and then write out whether or not you believe it and why/ why not.
2 Peter 1: 19-21, 2 Tim 3:16, 1 Thess 2:13, 1 John 5:9
John 17:17 ESV
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
John is quoting Jesus- this is the night before he dies.
2 Timothy 3:16–17 ESV
All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.
2 Peter 1:19–21 ESV
And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Scripture is not of human origin or effort, but was born along by the Holy Spirit… “thus sayeth the Lord”
Prophets are no longer necessary because the cannons are closed.
Psalm 1 ESV
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. The wicked are not so, but are like chaff that the wind drives away. Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous; for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.
Each psalm is placed in its salter by design.
This psalm tells us what the blessed man does.
In God’s economy, there are only 2 types of people; the righteous or the wicked.
Firmly planted like a root, or tossed to and fro by the wind like chaff.
6. Write out Eph 2:12.
Ephesians 2:12 ESV
remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
“strangers to the covenant of promise”
We are dwelling on the word “covenant” because the Bible places great importance on that word. The book of Hebrews is especially important to understand the New Covenant has replaced the Old. As we do our flyover of the Old Testament (“Old Covenant”), we will hover over each of these “covenants of promise” as they are called by the Apostle Paul, and pray for God’s blessing of understanding to the praise of His glory! Now, read Jesus’ words about the New Covenant in Luke 22:14-20.
Our God is a God of covenant- this is how God reveals himself to us.
Luke 22:14–20 ESV
And when the hour came, he reclined at table, and the apostles with him. And he said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves. For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.
