Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her Seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
This verse is the seedbed of all prophecy. The entire prophetic plan of the Bible, including the Gospel, is found in this one verse.
1. Background.
1. Background.
Adam and Eve were created by God in the image of God. Since they were in the image of God, they had a perfect relationship with God.
It was such a perfect relationship that God walked daily with them.
This relationship was predicated upon Adam’s and Eve’s obedience.
Genesis 3:6–7 “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”
Disobedience = no longer walking with God
Relationship forever changed as Adam and Eve tried to cover their sin.
Adam and Eve could not restore what they had broken. Only God could do that, and God provided a covering for Adam and Eve knowing what He had planned.
2. A Birth.
2. A Birth.
In Gen 3:15, you see the phrase her Seed. This is the first reference in the Bible to the birth of Jesus Christ.
Old Hebrew scholar dismissal
However, I trust God more than I do old Hebrew scholars, and God says her Seed referring both to the nation of Israel and to Mary as Mary was a Jew.
Image of God vs. the image of Adam
You and I are created in the image of Adam. Gen. 5:3, Romans 5:12.
Genesis 5:3 “And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:”
Romans 5:12 “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:”
Anyone born with a human father is in the likeness, in the image of Adam, meaning all with human fathers are sinners.
Sinner cannot cover another person’s sins. For God to be able to cover sin, including Adam’s and Eve’s sin, God would have to do ti.
God had to come to earth in human flesh without a human father. Luke 1:34-35.
Luke 1:34–35 “Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
Jesus was born to a virgin named Mary who got pregnant by the overshadowing and power of the Holy Ghost.
It was a miraculous birth.
If you deny the virgin birth of Christ, how could you possibly believe that he lived a sinless life and died for your sins? If Christ had a human father, He would be no different than Adam and no different than you and me.
God could forgive Adam and Eve because He knew He was coming to earth in human flesh to die for Adam’s and Eve’s disobedience.
3. A Bruising.
3. A Bruising.
“You will bruise his heel.”
This is a prophecy concerning the death of Christ on Calvary.
In our main verse, you must remember that God is placing a direct curse on Satan, and that God is talking to Satan, and God says you will bruise His heel.
For all those at Calvary that day from the bloodthirsty Roman soldiers, to the hypocritical Pharisees shouting, “Crucify Him!”, to the heartbroken disciples, it seemed that Christ was done.
All hope was lost as even the disciples did not understand what was happening.
Beaten, battered, bruised, crucified, and buried. The hope and light He brought into the world was darkened by death.
What would have finished the rest of us was just like a bruise to the foot of Christ as three days later He walked out of that tomb.
The Roman soldiers said He was dead.
Pilate certified His death.
The Pharisees guarded His tomb, but none of that mattered as God resurrected His Son.
Luke 24:1–3 “Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre. And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.”
Luke 24:4–6 “And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments: And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead? He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,”
Christ had just been bruised.
Isaiah 53:5 “But he was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: The chastisement of our peace was upon him; And with his stripes we are healed.”
The bruising was necessary to cover our sins, and that was God’s plan from the very beginning.
Romans 8:32 “He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?”
What God created pleased God, and God wanted a relationship with His creation, but it was a relationship that could only be made possible by the death of His beloved Son. That is why John 3:16 is such a magnificent verse.
John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Jesus had to be bruised. He was the sacrificial Lamb without blemish, but today He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah alive forevermore.
Revelation 1:17–18“And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”
4. A Battle.
4. A Battle.
I believe that Satan’s deception of Eve was the final straw that got him cursed eternally. At least that is what the Bible indicates.
Genesis 3:14 “And the Lord God said unto the serpent, Because thou hast done this, thou art cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life:”
Evidently, prior to this act of deception, Satan still maintained some if not all the beauty with which he was created, but after deceiving Eve, he was cursed.
Verse 15 “enmity”
Enmity is the word from which we get our word enemy.
There has been a great battle taking place between the forces of Satan and God ever since this curse that will continue until Satan’s head is crushed.
Let me show you how this battle has played out and is continuing to play out.
A. Satan and the Woman.
A. Satan and the Woman.
The woman is both Israel and Mary. Revelation 12:1-3.
Revelation 12:1–2 “And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars: And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.”
Revelation 12:3 “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.”
Woman = Israel
12 Stars crowning the woman = 12 Tribes of Israel
Being with child = Mary
Pained to be delivered = The attempts by Satan to keep Christ from being born
Great Red Dragon with 7 heads, 10 horns, and 7 crowns = Satan in all his wisdom, power, and authority trying to destroy the Woman (Both Mary and Israel)
Satan’s goal was to keep the seed of the woman from being born. Satan decided his best course of action was to attack the Jews killing those who could make the birth of Christ possible.
Pharaoh, Herod, and Hitler.
B. Satan’s Seed and the Woman’s Seed.
B. Satan’s Seed and the Woman’s Seed.
Satan’s seed is the coming Antichrist.
Many types throughout history. Master deceiver.
Jesus described his deception.
John 5:43 “I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive.”
Satan’s war against the seed of the woman has included both Jews and Christians. Millions of Christians have died as martyrs as the result of this great war.
Revelation 6:9–10 “And when he had opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of them that were slain for the word of God, and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, saying, How long, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on the earth?”
Satan’s attacks on the early church only made the church stronger. It is has been said that where the blood of the martyrs splattered, a new church sprang forth.
Satan’s attacks on Christians and Jews will intensify throughout the coming Tribulation.
C. Satan and Defeat.
C. Satan and Defeat.
Satan may look like he is winning, but his destiny has been sealed. Christ’s heel was bruised, but Satan’s head will be bruised.
Began at Resurrection and will be completed in the future.
First, his seed, the AC, will be destroyed.
Revelation 19:11 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.”
Revelation 19:20 “And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.”
Satan’s destruction comes a little later after the Millennium.
Revelation 20:10 “And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
Satan will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone forever and ever in torments, and those in Heaven will wonder how he ever deceived the world as he will be seen as what he really is.
Isaiah 14:16–17 “They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; That opened not the house of his prisoners?”
Satan’s head will not survive the fatal wound inflicted by the seed of the woman.
Conclusion:
God does not act randomly. He had a plan before He began Creation, and His plan includes you getting saved. Keep Genesis 3:15 in mind as I read these verses.
Romans 10:9–10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
Romans 10:13 “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
God has done all He can for you. He covered Adam and Eve in the Garden knowing the covering He was going to provide would cover you.
Will you believe in your heart and confess with your mouth that Jesus is your Lord and Savior?
