Proverbs 31:28-31
Proverbs 31:28-31
As we gather on this sacred occasion of Mother's Day, we turn to the timeless scripture found in Proverbs 31 This chapter is known for its virtues of an ultimate wife, but if you notice, she is an ultimate mother. Having prophetic words from a mother can mean that a mother has insights, guidance, or messages believed to be inspired by a divine source, which is God. These prophetic words may come in the form of encouragement, advice, warnings, or predictions. In this spiritual context, mothers are seen as spiritual nurturers. The main verse today Proverbs 31:30-31 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. 31 Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.
So this morning we are going to focus on the word praise today. a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. We are going to praise our mothers who fear the Lord. Is that okay? so let’s stand on our feet and give our mothers praise that is just like we are at the thunder game. Thank you and if your mother has passed and is no longer with us today, we would be remiss not to acknowledge them through who you are today. Our title is The Blessings of having a Christian Mother” A mother next to Christ is the supreme person in the life of her children. This being true, every mother should desire to be a Christian mother.
As I was writing this message a passage came to mind in I Corinthians 13:11 where the bible says When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things 1 cor.13:11 I was blessed to grow up with a Christian mother who was instrumental in helping to nurture and guide me into the more mature stages of life.
This verse beautifully encapsulates the journey of spiritual growth and maturity. Just as children must grow physically, we as believers are called to grow spiritually, leaving behind the immaturity of our early faith. As children, we approach life with a simplicity that is both innocent and naive. Our understanding is limited, and our perspective is narrow. We see the world through the eyes of a child, often unable to grasp the complexities of the world around us. Yet, as we mature in our faith, we are called to put away childish things. We are called to move beyond the simplicity of our childhood understanding and embrace a deeper, more nuanced faith. We are called to grow in our knowledge of God, our understanding of His Word, and our love for His people.
So I know you are asking how this fit into our lesson this morning. Well, what we need to see is how does one get to the beginning of a spiritual journey. None of us can say that it was our own accident that led us to the place where we accepted Christ in our life and completed it with baptism. Relationships are what brought you to trust in the Lord. Who better than to trust a Christian mother or Women? Someone who helps you along during your natural stage until you become a babe in christ. and even then they will continue steadfastly to teach and nurture you into those things that are eternal. Who better to do that than a mother who knows you. When you have a mother who sees you and the direction she needs to lay before is spiritual, you will recall those things later in life.
Raising children is truly a love sacrifice. For this to happen parents must have some type of unique nature about them and that is the “fear of the Lord”
So to get there this is where having a Christian mother is a blessing. Someone to guide me through life’s complexities. through my immaturity's and and naive stages.
This passage reminded me that someone had to assist me, correct me and love me into maturity. When we were young we needed a lot to mature and if you were blessed to have a Christian mother that was just like being one of the Joneses. This morning we will praise our mothers by looking at the virtuous values she instilled into us to be able to put away those childish ways. So What are the advantages of having a Christian mother?
1. **Recognizing Her Worth (Proverbs 31:28)**:
Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her:
“Bless” means to praise or worship. So the children bless her which means the worship her, they stand and worship her. Worship is and act of Love. while the husband praises and admire her for what she does. The Husband’s praise her another word is he eulogize her. Its also the same in the beatitudes when the bible says blessed are the poor in spirit, blessed are those who mourn, blessed are the meek. Jesus is saying praise those who hunger and seek after righteousness. , which we see is the same thing the husband does. This word means Christian mothers are the most humble people I know. They don’t like the light, but rather loves to see other shine bright like a diamond.
The passage highlights the importance of acknowledging and honoring the virtuous woman. She deserves recognition for her hard work, wisdom, and kindness.
- Just as her children and husband rise to call her blessed, we too should appreciate and esteem the virtuous women in our lives, whether it be our mothers, wives, sisters, or friends. Her children … call her blessed. She is positive and optimistic and enjoys her role in life. Her husband … praises her by telling others she is the greatest of the noble women (cf. v. 10).
2. **The Fruits of Her Labor (Proverbs 31:29-30)**:
“There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” 30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.
tell the story about the guy at the clinton gas station who said when choosing a wife be sure you see how she treats her mom, because that the way she will treat your kids.
So what’s her secret? Women have you ever had someone ask you how do you stay so young and pretty. Her secret is her godly character. She is physically charming and beautiful but those qualities may not last. - The virtuous woman's strength and dignity are evident in her actions and character. She is not defined by external beauty or wealth but by her fear of the Lord and her commitment to righteousness.
Virtuous and capable women in the world, means there are many women of age to marry. But you surpassed them all. That sounds like a pickup line. He’s eulogizing his wife that he can live without you. In the NKLV it says Many daughters have done well. Meaning power strength, wealth, property but you have something that excel above all that.
She will discipline us and teach us humility.
Humility is why mother’s don’t say I told you so
Humility is the beginning of true intelligence.
John Calvin
Proverbs 23:13–14 (NLT)
Don’t fail to discipline your children. The rod of punishment won’t kill them. Physical discipline may well save them from death.
Everything a child does is not cute. fruits of her labor is ensure her children do not go to hell
You ever heard the old folks say I’m going to beat that mess right out of you. I think they were paraphrasing this passage. That some of our immature ways is what needed to be removed or corrected. So that when the time came to turn your life over to Christ, you would have some humility and teachings that where strong enough to keep you close to the truth. Discipline or correction is really a warning or message describing what can happen if you continue this way. As they say a wise man learns from his mistakes, but a wiser man learned from others mistakes.
Direct your children onto the right path,
and when they are older, they will not leave it. (Train up a child) Proverbs 22:6
In my 23 years of education, I see the teachers that students will hate, but when they leave or graduate who do they first come and see. The reason is because they were able to make it because of how those teachers where determined to ensure those kids all the tools needed in life.
- Her example teaches us the enduring value of integrity, diligence, and faithfulness. In a world that often values superficial qualities, her life stands as a testament to the eternal significance of godly character.
She will teach us the Scriptures. Deut. 6:4–7
Deuteronomy 6:4–7 (NKJV)
4 “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! 5 You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. 6 “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.
The Scriptures teach us the best way of living, the noblest way of suffering, and the most comfortable way of dying.
John Flavel; Joel Beeke; Randall J. Pederson
Once again my mother would use scriptures to correct my childish ways. She used it like a rod iron, correction, and discipline to help me mature and correct my immature ways. I don't know about you but those scriptures stuck with me. If I were to go around the room and ask you what your mother’s favorite scripture was? I believe you could give it in a heartbeat and you probably have used it a few times on your own or someone who needed that passage.
3. **Her Legacy Endures (Proverbs 31:31)**:
(Reward) Give her of the fruit of her hands, And let her own works praise her in the gates.Pr 31:31.(NKJV)
The passage concludes by affirming the lasting impact of the virtuous woman. Her legacy extends beyond her own lifetime, influencing future generations.
- As we strive to emulate her virtues, may we also leave a legacy of faithfulness, wisdom, and love. Let us honor the virtuous women who have gone before us and seek to walk in their footsteps, knowing that our lives, too, can make a difference for the glory of God.
Scriptural teaching usually leads to salvation, John 3:3–5 and godly living, Rom. 12:1–2.
John 3:3–5 (NKJV)
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
The greatest gift you can ever give a mother is your baptismal certificate.
