“Peace be with you.”
1 Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You, 2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. 3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. 4 “I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. 5 “Now, Father, glorify Me together with Yourself, with the glory which I had with You before the world was. 6 “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word. 7 “Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; 8 for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me. 9 “I ask on their behalf; I do not ask on behalf of the world, but of those whom You have given Me; for they are Yours; 10 and all things that are Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine; and I have been glorified in them. 11 “I am no longer in the world; and yet they themselves are in the world, and I come to You. Holy Father, keep them in Your name, the name which You have given Me, that they may be one even as We are. 12 “While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled. 13 “But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. 14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 15 “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. 16 “They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. 17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
Let’s Pray:
“Father may your will be done. Jesus may your word be proclaimed. Spirit may your work in us be accomplished we prayer. Amen”
I. What is Jesus’ prayer for you?
I. What is Jesus’ prayer for you?
A. That you may have Eternal Life (v.2)
A. That you may have Eternal Life (v.2)
2 even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life.
1. What is Eternal life? (v.3)
1. What is Eternal life? (v.3)
3 “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
Eternal life is more than just living forever. Eternal life is a way of life, its the truth about life, and it is the only life. Knowing God is paramount in the life of those who believe.
Jesus tells us what eternal life is all about. What may come to our mind is an everlasting life. And although this is partly true, Eternal life, we told is about knowing God the the one whom He has sent- Jesus. Knowing Jesus is eternal life.
With this understand of Eternal life consider these verses:
16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
17 “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him.
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.
31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.
If knowing God is paramount, then how do we come to know God?
2. So How it is that we come to have eternal life? Or How can we come to know God?
2. So How it is that we come to have eternal life? Or How can we come to know God?
We come to know God through the life of Jesus who “manifests” the nature and character of God.
6 “I have manifested Your name to the men whom You gave Me out of the world; they were Yours and You gave them to Me, and they have kept Your word.
We come to know God by better understanding his way by keeping His word.
We come to Know God through the Words of Jesus and His Disciples who understood them.
7 “Now they have come to know that everything You have given Me is from You; 8 for the words which You gave Me I have given to them; and they received them and truly understood that I came forth from You, and they believed that You sent Me.
God has revealed himself not just through the life of Jesus but has also declared himself through the words of Jesus.
Jesus taught this disciples these words, and Jesus affirms that they understood them and believed them.
this is why when the church was born they dedicated themselves to prayer and the apostle’s teaching.
The Church was build upon the testimony of these disciples.
Jesus ascended and was no longer available to carry on His ministry. Instead he equipped and empowered his disciples to carry on his ministry.
The ministry of Jesus, as we have heard, is a family business. It comes from the Father, then the Son, then his disciples, and now to all those who believe in Jesus like his disciples did. When you know God you are also brought into a family business offering others eternal life.
In his prayer, already establishes that the Disciples have eternal life, that they know, understand and believe in God and the one who He has sent. This means that eternal life is not something we possess later but something that we can begin possessing now. If you are able to possess it now, how will we know?
3. How do we know we have eternal life now?
3. How do we know we have eternal life now?
Having eternal life means you get to have the guidance and guard of the Father.
12 “While I was with them, I was keeping them in Your name which You have given Me; and I guarded them and not one of them perished but the son of perdition, so that the Scripture would be fulfilled.
Having eternal life will put you at enmity with the world.
14 “I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
The Church cannot cater to the world. If we are a Church that has eternal life, knowing and believing, and trust in God and his word, then the world will not life us. The only way for the world to feel comfortable when us or what we believe is if we compromise the truth. But the truth is foolishness to the world, but to those who are being saved is it the very wisdom of God.
But having Eternal Life allows you to overcome the world even though you are still in it.
15 “I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.
Having Eternal life leads to Sanctification.
17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth.
Sanctify- has a meaning that involves two ideas, 1) To be sanctified means to be set apart; 2) as being set apart, you are being used as you were created to be used.
Sanctification is how one is able to live in the world but not be of the world.
18 “As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 “For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.
Use the example of the Chair.
Having eternal life leads to understand The Family Business which is to be “fruitful and multiply.”
20 “I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word;
Having eternal life seeks unity with other believers.
21 that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.
