Introduction

Exodus 2:1–10 ESV
1 Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. 3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank. 4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him. 5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”
Hebrews 11:23 ESV
23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king’s edict.

1) Abundant Motherhood Displays Faith

“By faith…”
Moses’ mother, Jochebed, was not ordinary woman.
In the midst of enslavement in Egypt, amidst the Egyptian culture and belief in false gods, she was a woman who displayed great faith and faithfulness.
She acknowledged and held faith in God when it would have been easy to abandon faith in God.
We live in a time where it is easier to abandon faith in God than it is to be a mother who displays faith.
Yet God is the one who defines motherhood.
Abundant Motherhood can only be truly experienced when a mother places her full faith in God and mothers by faith and not by sight.

2) Abundant Motherhood Displays Fortitude

“…Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months…”
Jochebed was determined to protect her child from the culture of death.
Moses was born in a time where Pharoah feared the growing number of the Hebrew population and was demanding that every male child be thrown into the river! (Ex. 1:22)
This kind of determination wasn’t easy. It also required diligence.
She had to constantly be aware of the dangers that would jeopardize the well-being of her son.
There are many dangers in our culture for our children today.
We live in a culture of sin and death.
Our children’s minds are being polluted with the filth of a secular and sexualized culture.
The culture is demanding that every child be thrown into the rivers of brokenness, transgenderism, sexual identity, mental instability, self-idolatry, chasing self glory, busyness with no eternal purpose, religious apathy, and the denial of absolute morality.
As a result, our children are being carried away to death and destruction.
Right now in our nation there is a mental healthy crisis among preteens, teens, and young adults. Could this possibly be due to letting our children develop a sense of worth and value from culture fed to them through screens, social media, athletic performance, and a barrage of self-entitlements?
In today’s culture, experiencing Abundant Motherhood demands that mothers become determined and diligent to protect their children from this culture of death and godlessness.

3) Abundant Motherhood Displays Foresight

“…because they saw the child was beautiful…”
Jochebed knew that her child was precious in God’s sight and that he was a child of purpose.
“asteios” used only twice in the Bible, both in reference to Moses. Means “beautiful, not ordinary, chosen for purpose”
While much of our culture sees children as burdens, Abundant Motherhood calls for moms to see their children as blessings.
Experiencing Abundant Motherhood means that you see your children are created on purpose for purpose. They are precious in God’s sight and should be raised in full view of Him and for the purpose of His Glory.
Our prayer for our children is that they know God, draw close to Him, and honor Him all of their days.
Abundant Motherhood holds the view of raising children as meaningful for the purpose of children becoming a reflection of their Creator, and not the culture.

4) Abundant Motherhood Displays Fearlessness

“…they were not afraid of the king’s edict.”
Jochebed had the courage to defy the king’s edict.
Abundant Motherhood requires fearlessness and courage in the face of the culture.
This courage comes from a healthy reverence for God and proper perspective of what truly matters.
