Intro: We have been studying the suffering of the Lord Jesus Christ. I’d like us today to consider that suffering, and the ending of that suffering. I will tell you that I do not understand every aspect to all of what the Scriptures are telling us here, but I believe it to be true!
And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 26:36-45
Luke 22:39-46
Mark 14:32-42
And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. Now is my soul troubled; and what shall I say? Father, save me from this hour: but for this cause came I unto this hour. Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again. The people therefore, that stood by, and heard it, said that it thundered: others said, An angel spake to him. Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. This he said, signifying what death he should die. The people answered him, We have heard out of the law that Christ abideth for ever: and how sayest thou, The Son of man must be lifted up? who is this Son of man? Then Jesus said unto them, Yet a little while is the light with you. Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you: for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth. While ye have light, believe in the light, that ye may be the children of light. These things spake Jesus, and departed, and did hide himself from them.
Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, I am he. And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as he had said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, Whom seek ye? And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, I have told you that I am he: if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way: That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me have I lost none. Then Simon Peter having a sword drew it, and smote the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
Question: Was Jesus’s sorrow and agony over what man was going to do to Him? No, He feared God…
Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him;
We understand that Jesus suffered and died, His soul was made an offering for sin in hell. His body was in the grave, not seeing corruption, but brought to a clean place, but His soul was made an offering for sin. His soul was judged for sin, and he suffered as the sinner will or would suffer in hell.
Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.
For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
And they shall go forth, and look
Upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me:
For their worm shall not die,
Neither shall their fire be quenched;
And they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
But I am a worm, and no man;
A reproach of men, and despised of the people.
How much less man, that is a worm?
And the son of man, which is a worm?
I want to be clear, that His body saw no sin, no corruption by sin, His flesh never sinned… This is reaffirmed in Psalm 18
For I have kept the ways of the Lord,
And have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his judgments were before me,
And I did not put away his statutes from me.
I was also upright before him,
And I kept myself from mine iniquity.
Therefore hath the Lord recompensed me according to my righteousness,
According to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
It was His SOUL that was made sin and had to be made an offering for sin.
But...
Jesus knew His soul would not be left in hell...
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;
Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
I had fainted, unless I had believed
To see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
I will walk before the Lord
In the land of the living.
I cried unto thee, O Lord:
I said, Thou art my refuge
And my portion in the land of the living.
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Three places within the Scripture that we see the word “paradise” and in each instance one thing is true… Jesus is there!
How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God.
Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever. Be not carried about with divers and strange doctrines. For it is a good thing that the heart be established with grace; not with meats, which have not profited them that have been occupied therein. We have an altar, whereof they have no right to eat which serve the tabernacle. For the bodies of those beasts, whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest for sin, are burned without the camp. Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate. Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach. For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come. By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name. But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
