The Power of Jesus over:

Whole passage context:
If we aren’t careful we will approach a section of scripture like this as if Jesus were unaware of everything that will come. He got into the boat and didn’t realize that a storm was coming. He didn’t know there was a demon possessed man…
We must come to a passage of scripture like this knowing Jesus was fully aware of everything that would happen, he is God.
There are times where we can treat Jesus like Superman. Sometimes he’s Clark Kent and Sometimes he’s superman. Sometimes he’s God and sometimes he’s man.
Nature (22-25)
Jesus is sleeping. Not the point of the text, but this is profound when we consider Jesus being fully God and Fully man.
Hypostatic union is a reference to Jesus Christ as both God and man, fully divine and fully human.
The Incarnation
We see this very clearly in these 3 verses.
Sea of Galilee
5 Miles wide, 13 miles long, 700 ft below sea level
Storms were not uncommon. Based upon the topography a storm could come quickly and unexpectantly.
** Hurricane Katrina**
Disciples Response (To the storm/To Jesus)
Master, Master > The emotion behind this phrase communicates a fear **Smoke Alarm and Kids at our door**
We often forget what is true about God in the midst of storms.
Can you imagine waking up Jesus. ** I know how I am being woken up**
Jesus’ Response (To the storm/To disciples)
Mark 4:39 Be muzzled
The storm immediately stopped.
Rebuke is less about the immediate situation and more about the whole picture. In the midst of the storm they failed to remember who they were with.
Where is your faith?
You should be more trusting. His rebuke wasn’t simply that they were scared in the moment. His rebuke was because they lacked faith. Faith
Luke (Comments)
The disciples were not rebuked for having no faith at all but for lacking sufficient faith. They lacked sufficient faith to realize that if they were in the Lord’s presence, they need not have feared
Application:
Where are you struggling to believe Jesus is who he said he is?
What do you turn to when the storms of life hit?
Themes:
The Christian life is in immune from tribulation. We know this right?
I fear there is an underlying belief for some in the faith that they feel entitled or owed healing or relief or ____ because they have follow Jesus. This is where the health, wealth, and prosperity Gospel is extremely damaging.
When we truly believe in both the good times and the hard times that we Get Jesus and that’s enough then we can faithfully endure the tribulations that will come.
The Message of Luke c. The Purpose of Tribulation in the Christian Life

The disciples of Christ are neither free from tribulation, nor helpless in tribulation, but victorious over tribulation

Verses:
Take heart I have overcome the world.
Demonic (26-39)
Sickness (43-48)
Death (40-43,49-56)
