Luke 10:38–42 (ESV)
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

Introduction

The encounter of Jesus with Mary and Martha serves up numerous principles for us to consider. We’ll look at three:

3 Principles:

Distractions will Destroy

Jesus was in their house, but Martha was concerned with preparing a meal
This was not a sinful act, but her attention to lesser matters robbed her of the chance to learn from Jesus in her own home

Relationship always Rule

Jesus neither condoned nor condemned Martha’s actions, Instead, Jesus took the opportunity to let all of them (and us) know that relationship should always trump activities. There will always be details to address, but opportunities for meaning connection—in this case Jesus—are not as abundant

Humility is Honored

Mary’s actions reveal to us that God honors humility and a teachable spirit.
Mary understood that she may never have the chance to be so close to the Messiah. She would not let the opportunity pass her by.

Conclusion

While a short scene, the moment provides valuable insight into what really matters in life.
Jesus’s words, along with Mary and Martha’s actions, should challenge us to ensure we focus on the things that really matter—our faith and walk with Christ.
