Lessons of Love: A Mother's Day Sermon

Introduction

- Brief introduction about the significance of Mother's Day.
Did your mom teach you anything worth remembering? Like how to cook or how to sew or how to love? My mom taught me how to cook for myself. Although, I am not a cook like my wife my was always worried that I would marry someone who didn’t know how to cook. She even showed me how to sew my own clothes. Today when I cook or sew I remember what my mother taught me.
I. We should embrace the wisdom of our mother.
When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.Proverbs 31:26
A. The Blessing of Wisdom.
Embracing the wisdom imparted by mothers leads to a life guided by kindness and understanding.
The positive impact of a mother's wisdom is immeasurable in nurturing discerning and compassionate individuals.
B. The Consequence of Ignoring Wisdom
Neglecting the wisdom of mothers can lead to a lack of guidance and moral compass, resulting in poor decisions and a harder path in life.
C. When we listen to her wisdom we are rewarded.
Those who listen and apply their mother’s teachings find themselves equipped for life’s challenges, earning respect and trust from others, and fostering positive relationships.
The first time I saw disappointment in my mothers eyes was when I was 12 years old. I did something really dumb and was caught shoplifting at a little convenience store. I remember the police officer didn’t take me to jail, he took my home. At the time, I kind of wished he had. The officer took me out of the car and walked me up the sidewalk into our home in handcuffs and then walked me inside of our house. “What did you do?” she asked me. After he explained what I had done he took off the cuffs and released me to my parents. The spanking was unforgettable, but the pain in my mothers eyes was even more unforgettable. Because it was against everything she had taught me to not be.
II. The Cost of Neglecting our mothers wisdom.
“So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him.Luke 15:20
A. The Father's Welcoming Love
I have often thought about the mother in this story. Like where was she? What did she think?
This parable, while focusing on the father, can also be seen as reflecting the steadfast love often shown by mothers. When we accept this love, we are welcomed with forgiveness and compassion.
B. The Pain of Separation
When the prodigal son chose to leave his father, he experienced hardship and regret. Similarly, neglecting a mother's love can lead to emotional and spiritual emptiness.
There may be times when we need to leave home, but we should never leave for reasons of rebellion.
C. Restored Relationships
Upon returning and embracing the love offered, relationships are healed.
This teaches us the power of reconciliation and the blessings of renewed bonds.
III. The Harmony of Honor.
“Honor your father and mother.” This is the first commandment with a promise: If you honor your father and mother, “things will go well for you, and you will have a long life on the earth.”Ephesians 6:2–3
A. We are commanded to honor our mothers.
Honoring our mothers is not only a biblical command but comes with the promise of a prosperous and long life. This respect fosters peace and joy in family relationships.
What is honor?
B. What happens when we dishonor our mothers.
Disrespect towards mothers can lead to familial strife and personal turmoil, affecting overall well-being and harmony.
C. The Fruits of Honor
When we choose to honor our mothers, we cultivate an environment of mutual respect and understanding, leading to personal and familial blessings.
