In 2021, we looked at Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and in 2022 we looked at God’s design for mothers. Last year we looked at Proverbs 31, a godly mother. Today we look at Hannah, a godly wife and mother and get inspiration from her story.
Let Us Pray!
I. She Prayed for Her Child(ren)
1 Samuel 1:10, 12, 13 – She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly. As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard.
1 Samuel 2:5 – Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry have ceased to hunger. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn.
Psalm 91:15 – When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.
A. She Prayed with Sorrow
1 Samuel 1:10 – She was deeply distressed and prayed to the Lord and wept bitterly.
1 Peter 5:6-7 – Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Psalm 34:18 – The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
(Moms can pray with sorrow when kids wander, lose a child etc. – its ok)
B. She Prayed Secretly
1 Samuel 1:12-13 – As she continued praying before the Lord, Eli observed her mouth. Hannah was speaking in her heart; only her lips moved, and her voice was not heard.
Matthew 6:6 – But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
C. She Prayed Presently
1 Samuel 1:9 – After they had eaten and drunk in Shiloh, Hannah rose. Now Eli the priest was sitting on the seat beside the doorpost of the temple of the Lord.
1 Samuel 12:23 – Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you, and I will instruct you in the good and the right way.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 – pray without ceasing,
Colossians 4:2 – Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving.
Luke 11:9-12 – And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
(Don’t wait for the time to pray – now is always the right time)
D. She Prayed with Power
1 Samuel 2:6-10 – The Lord kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up.
(she knew the power of the Lord)
The Lord makes poor and makes rich; he brings low and he exalts. He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honor.
(She knew God’s character)
For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s, and on them he has set the world. “He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail.
(She knew God’s ability)
The adversaries of the Lord shall be broken to pieces; against them he will thunder in heaven. The Lord will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed.”
(She knew God’s Strength)
Hebrews 4:16 – Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
James 1:6 – But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.
MOM’s pray for your children
Psalm 127:3 – Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.
II. Pray With Thanksgiving in Mind
A. She Vowed a Vow
1 Samuel 1:11 – And she vowed a vow and said, “O Lord of hosts, if you will indeed look on the affliction of your servant and remember me and not forget your servant, but will give to your servant a son, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall touch his head.”
Psalm 61:5 – For you, O God, have heard my vows; you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
Psalm 116:14 – I will pay my vows to the Lord in the presence of all his people.
B. She Kept Her Word
Ecclesiastes 5:4-5 – When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay.
1 Samuel 1:23 – Elkanah her husband said to her, “Do what seems best to you; wait until you have weaned him; only, may the Lord establish his word.” So the woman remained and nursed her son until she weaned him.
1 Samuel 1:28 – Therefore I have lent him to the Lord. As long as he lives, he is lent to the Lord.” And he worshiped the Lord there.
(When we pray and promise – follow thru Burt Reynolds movie “The End” )
III. She Praised God
A. She Praised God for Answered Prayer
1 Samuel 1:27 – For this child I prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him.
1 Samuel 2:2 – “There is none holy like the Lord: for there is none besides you; there is no rock like our God.
Psalm 50:15 – and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”
Psalm 66:19-20 – But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer. Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me!
Psalm 91:15 – When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him.
B. She Praises God for her Salvation
Not like a Pharisee
Luke 18:11-12 – The Pharisee, standing by himself, prayed thus: ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I get.’
1 Samuel 2:1 – And Hannah prayed and said, “My heart exults in the Lord; my horn is exalted in the Lord. My mouth derides my enemies, because I rejoice in your salvation.
Mary prayed the same
Luke 1:46-47 – And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
1 Peter 1:8-9 – Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Psalm 32:1 – Blessed is the one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
1 Samuel 2:20 – Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, “May the Lord give you children by this woman for the petition she asked of the Lord.”
Mothers – may others see your faith, witness the power of your prayer life – and be inspired to change and increase theirs.
Let us Pray!
