THERE IS NOTHING LIKE A MOTHER
Text: 1 Samuel 1:27.-2827 For this child I prayed; and the Lord hath given me my petition which I asked of him: 28 Therefore also I have lent him to the Lord; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the Lord. And he worshipped the Lord there.
“For this child I prayed.”
INTRODUCTION: The second Sunday of May is celebrated as Mother’s Day. The founder of this day was Miss Anna Jarvis, a teacher in the primary department of St. Andrew Methodist Church, Grafton, West Virginia, the class her deceased mother had taught. On May 12, 1907, Miss Jarvis passed out carnations to this class in honor of her mother. In this way Mother’s Day was born. In 1914 Woodrow Wilson Officially establishing the second sunday in May as Mothers Day.
HOW DID SAMUEL GET HIS START AS A GREAT MAN OF GOD?
1. Mother’s prayers—“For this child I prayed,” 1 Sam. 1:27.
2. She dressed him for the church services, 2:18–19. 18 But Samuel ministered before the LORD, being a child, girded with a linen ephod. 19 Moreover his mother made him a little coat, and brought it to him from year to year, when she came up with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.
3. “The child was young” when she took him, 1 Sam. 24 And when she had weaned him, she took him up with her, with three bullocks, and one ephah of flour, and a bottle of wine, and brought him unto the house of the LORD in Shiloh: and the child was young.
4. She recognized God’s ownership of the child, v. 28.
5. Hannah rejoiced over this arrangement with God, 2:1.1 And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.
IN THE NEW TESTAMENT, CONSDER THE MOTHER OF JESUS;
1. She found favor with God. Luke1:28 And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS
2. She took care of him as a child.Luke 2. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.
3. She was with him as he ministred to the people. John 1:1 And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there: 2 And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage.
4: She was there when he died. John 19; 26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home
SOME OF A CHILD’S MOST SACRED MEMORIES OF A MOTHER:
1. One who really cared for our happiness in life.
2. One who really cared for our soul.
3. One whose arms gave the greatest comfort.
4. The most unselfish person we ever knew.
5. The blessed doctor in times of sickness.
6. The queen of the kitchen—none can cook like she can.
THE POWER OF A MOTHER’S LOVE?
1. World famous painter—Benjamin West: “Mother’s kiss made me an artist.”
2. St. Augustine: “Mother’s prayers made me a saint.”
3. Americans may say: “Give us more Abraham Lincolns!” Rather let us say: “Give us more godly mothers!” for Lincoln said: “All I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel mother.”
