Do this in rememberance of me
Do this in rememberance of me
Luke 22 verse 1-23
How easily do we forget what God has done for us.
We come to church and we worship God
And it is so easy to go home and literally forget
everything that we have just studied.
Honestly try this some time…
Go home and ask what your parents favorite part of the sermon was.
We are a people that are prone to forgetting.
There is a wonderful hymn written by pastor robert robinson
in 1758
called come thou fount of every blessing
in the song he writes
prone to wonder Lord I feel it,
prone to leave the God I Love.
Now why would we ever feel the pull to wonder away from the Lord...
and Lord knows I feel it
and so does every honest christian..
it is because we can so quickly forget just how sweet the gospel is
and just how blessed we are to have Christ as our Lord and savior..
Today we are going to read about how Jesus institutes the Lords supper...
the communion that we take every sunday as a church in the main sanctuary…
open up your bibles to Luke Ch 22
starting in verse 1-6
Chapter opens up with the story of how judas has planned to betray Jesus.
As the passover feast was drawing near
the chief priests of Israel and the scribes were plotting on how they could kill Jesus
I dont know about you
but when you take a step back, these guys were cold bloded holy murderers.
this is premeditated murder
During this season of plotting
We notice a very intriguing detail found in the text
satan enters Judas.
one of the 12 disciples that was so closely connected to Jesus
he has been corupted and literally posessed by satan to
plots with the religious leaders...
We need to understand from this text
that everyone that comes to church is not born again
not everyone is a born again believer
Q. Do you know who kieth Green is??
He said if you stand in a car garage it doesnt make you a car.
in the same way, because you sit in a church , it doesnt make you a christian.
“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
make sure that you are sorry for your sin
and that you have come to Jesus for forgivness
not just because your parents told you to come.
Judas looked the part
but he was far from God
So far that satan was able to possess him to do his will..
So Judas is now looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus
lets move into verse 7 as we read about How the upper room is prepared for the passover meal.
Luke 22:7–13 (NKJV)
We read about the day the passover meal will be eaten
the passover meal is a feast in which Israel remembers when
they were set free from slavery in Egypt
they are primarily remembering when God command them to sacrafice
a perfect lamb .
to spread the Blood of the lamb on the doorpost.
and to eat the lamb.
When the angel of death came to kill
all of the firstborn children in the homes
throughout egypt
the angel would passover the homes
that had the blood of the lamb
applied to the door posts.
This plauge was instituted because pharoh refused to let the Israelites Go....
After this plauge, he let them Go..
Fastforward to this very day passover is still celebrated by the jewish people.
On this day we read in the text Jesus calls peter and John to go prepare the room for the feast.
In His omniscience Jesus tells peter and John to exactly what to look for.
when you enter the city
there will be a man carrying water
tell him that we need the room and he will surely show you the way to it.
It was kind of like when I told Jessica,
on your way home from walmart
your going to see a large sign with a chicken on it
stop there and tell the man the teacher needs a number 4 with extra chick fila sauce
He will say my pleasure....
i am just kidding,
I am sure Jesus had pre arranged the plan to have the feast at this mans house
but in his divinity,
he knew what peter and john were going to see when they walked up..
lets continue in verses 14-18
We get a peak into the passover meal that his disciples share
this is often called the last supper
we see how Jesus says with fervent desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer.
He is so eager for this time because it is
the final gathering before He goes to the cross.
It is special
He has much to say and prepare his disciples for
as His mission has pointed to this
During the passover there are 4 cups of ceremonial drinking.
Here he tells them this is the last time im going to drink wine with you
until the kingdom of God comes.
He is preparing them for his departure
During this passover meal
Jesus institutes the Lords Supper
read verse 19-20
This is so significant because Jesus fulfills the passover.
Therefore purge out the old leaven, that you may be a new lump, since you truly are unleavened. For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.
Jesus becomes our passover lamb
in that He becomes the perfect sacrafice.
He institutes an ordinance that we as christians are called to take part in
in order to remember what Jesus has done for us
and to remember who He is
The bread reminds us of His body and
how it was brutally beaten and hung on a cross
we drink the wine in order to remember the blood that was spilled
in his sacrafice.
in the same way the blood of the lamb saved the Israelites in egypt
the blood of the lamb of God saves us from sin once and for all.
The cup institutes a new covenant between God and His people
a covenant of grace and forgiveness found in the work of Jesus Christ
This is the first time the church takes communion
Q. Why do we take communion?
to remember what Jesus did for us’
This must only imply then that we are easy to forget
Do any of you remember where you were when covid hit?
—(ask them about it,,,where were you., what did you think.. etc
How many of you remember what you ate for dinner last monday?
The reason you dont remember last mondays dinner is because it
is not that important.
its mundane… average,, not a big deal
We can not let that happen with the gospel....
We need to be reminded of what Jesus has done for us
and just how big the ramifications are.....
His work on the cross and your faith in Him have eternal ramifications.
What you do with the cross determines your eternal dwelling place.
therefore we must remember Him
our first application point is to
Remember his love
Remember his love
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.
Jesus institutes the Lords supper
and says to remember me and what I am going to do for you.
Why is he doing this?
why is he going to lay down his life for his friends
its because He loves us
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
If you ever wonder, Does God really love me?
look no further than the cross.
He willingly went there to purchase your salvation.
story---sometimes I get in my head and think God loves me only because He has to.
Thats false: He wants to love you...
some of you need to let God love you.
step out of the way
When you take communion, remember that God loves you
and that He gave His life for you.
our 2nd point is
Remember His Work
Remember His Work
When you take communion
remember What it cost Jesus
and what the cross is
He went to spill his blood and have His body severely beaten
willingly
not only that but he had to carry the cross miles up the hill
and worst of all
He had to endure the wrath of God in your place.
The work He accomplished was the work of taking the wrath of God that has been stored up by you.
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
In His work
He took your sin on the cross and paid for it completely
if you would recieve it by faith....
By faith our sin is completely gone in regards to our standing with God
Great exchange...
remember this when you take communion.
Our last point is
Remember His Promise
Remember His Promise
When we take communion
We need to remember that Jesus has gone to prepare a place for us in heaven
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.
We also need to remember that He is coming Back.
Therefore when we take communion
it is a reminder of Who we worship,
Why we worship Him
And just what He has done for us…
Q. How much do you think of What Jesus has done for you?
Q. When you think of Him What do you remember?
do you understand the magnitude of what he has done for you.
remember this every day.
For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
