Passage

1 Timothy 2 ESV
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time. 7 For this I was appointed a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. 8 I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; 9 likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, 10 but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works. 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. 13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve; 14 and Adam was not deceived, but the woman was deceived and became a transgressor. 15 Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.
In this passage, Paul is giving specific instructions to Timothy to instill order within the gatherings of the church in Ephesus.
1 Corinthians 14:40 ESV
40 But all things should be done decently and in order.
Through the false teaching of teachers and disobedience to God’s Word, not only was there no order, but their gathering was becoming ineffective.
God provides order and reason so that man might live in the freedom it offers!
The church is a living organism.
Think about our bodies… if you part quits working or becomes “out of order,” we are less effective...
The instructions Paul is outlining for Timothy exhort the responsibilities of men and women within the church!

The Power and Priority of Prayer

1 Timothy 2:1–4 ESV
1 First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, 2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. 3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, 4 who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
What have you been recently praying for and God has surely provided answers or clarity?
“First of all” - I do not think it is by chance that Paul begins his priorities of worship with prayer...
Yet we many times resort to prayer last… not first.
Why don’t we treat prayer like this?
*I believe in Encounter and Men’s Prayer Breakfast
Acts 6:4 ESV
4 But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”
Prayer was just as much a apart of the Apostolic ministry as teaching/preaching the Word.
Within this passage, Paul is giving us four of the seven greek nouns used for prayer in the NT.
The first is translated as “supplications”
“offering a request for a felt need”
The second is actually translated as “prayers”
This noun the sacredness of prayer- it is ac act of worship in of itself!
Thirdly, we see intercessions
Also translated as petitions
Also seen in 1Timothy 4:5
means “to draw near to a person and converse confidently with him” (Enjoying fellowship with God
Lastly, thanksgivings.
We give thanks for answers to prayers, who God is, and what He has done!
Sometimes our prayers just need to be Thanksgivings- no petitions at all! (See Psalm 103)
There is a formula here...
Prayer + supplication +thanksgiving = peace.
Philippians 4:6 ESV
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Who are the objects of prayer?

All people!
We pray for those we know and those we don’t know
saved and unsaved
friends and enemies
But we also pray especially for who?
1 Timothy 2:2 ESV
2 for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.
What does Paul mean y “quiet” and “peaceful” lives?
Quiet - Circumstances
Peaceful - our calm attitude

Why do we need to pray?

Because it is GOOD.
1 Timothy 2:3 ESV
3 This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,
the greek word for good means it is intrinsically good- not just good because of it’s benefits..
In other words, it is fair and beautiful.
Our culture has watered down this word!
“good enough” is common, but in the greek has no place. Something that was good to them is perfect to us!
It is also pleasing to the Lord...
Why can prayer be difficult?
Let me encourage you to use Paul’s outline for prayer… Make a list under each form of prayer and begin your conversation from there… Peace will be at hand!
He is your Father.. Talk to Him as so!

What is the basis for prayer?

The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Two: Service—Or Circus? (1 Timothy 2)

If the basis for prayer is the sacrificial work of Jesus Christ on the cross, then prayer is a most important activity in a church. Not to pray is to slight the cross! To pray only for ourselves is to deny the worldwide outreach of the cross. To ignore lost souls is to ignore the cross. “All men” [people] is the key to this paragraph: We pray for “all” because Christ died for “all” and it is God’s will that “all” be saved. We must give ourselves to God to be a part of His worldwide program to reach people before it is too late.

Notice the pointed encouragement- MEN PRAY
Why do you think he called out the men?
*Call for leadership...
I always has girls raise there hand or offer their service.. rarely did I have boys.
I could recruit five moms to pray for our students easily, but finding five men to dedicate their time to weekly prayer is difficult...
Paul was seeking to help Timothy call out and develop leaders...
If men don’t pray, men don’t lead. Period.

Women’s Roles in the Church

Any questions, call, email, text...
Let’s end our time in prayer...
Assign these roles...
Prayer- Thank God for who He is and what He has done
Supplication - pray for a need in our class (Spiritual/Physical) (Pray for men to seek to lead and women to continue to serve faithfully in their part)
Thanksgiving - Thank the Lord for our time together, for His blessings among this church, and for our class!
