Luke 18:18-30

Luke 18:18–30 CSB
A ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not bear false witness; honor your father and mother. “I have kept all these from my youth,” he said. When Jesus heard this, he told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell all you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” After he heard this, he became extremely sad, because he was very rich. Seeing that he became sad, Jesus said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Those who heard this asked, “Then who can be saved?” He replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God.” Then Peter said, “Look, we have left what we had and followed you.” So he said to them, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left a house, wife or brothers or sisters, parents or children because of the kingdom of God, who will not receive many times more at this time, and eternal life in the age to come.”

Luke 18:18 CSB
A ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Transition period
Mark tells us “a man ran up, and knelt down”
great gravity and seriousness mixed with urgency
urgency is tied to the question
What must “i” do?
Luke 18:19–20 CSB
“Why do you call me good?” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone. You know the commandments: Do not commit adultery; do not murder; do not steal; do not bear false witness; honor your father and mother.
“Why do you call me good?”
many have made claims that jesus did not claim goodness or sinlessness and that he was in fact sinful in his human nature
if jesus was not sinless he was not the Christ the Messiah the spotless lamb
this is not a question of deity but one of identity “who do you say i am?”
we can almost translate what Jesus is saying as “you call me good teacher but why do you call me good when you know that nobody except God is good unless you do in fact believe me to be the son of God”
“you know the commandments”
this is not the answer we are expecting
what happened to the claim “I am the way the truth and the life” we are not saved by works but grace alone
unless this is a challenge?

I have kept all these from my youth,” he said

All these you have kept from your youth?
was it not just a little while ago where we heard to hate was to murder to lust was to adulterate?
Jesus has the man set up for a correction but instead says...

When Jesus heard this, he told him, “You still lack one thing: Sell all you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

Easy simple steps

After he heard this, he became extremely sad, because he was very rich.

The task was not impossible
The man would not give up his riches

Seeing that he became sad, Jesus said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”

Camel is significant
Camel is both the largest animal known to the culture
A Camel is very useful because of its ability to go for long distances through the dessert without water making it very useful for caring goods on the new trade routes going all throughout the different regions in the middle east simply stated the camel also represent wealth and prosperity
debated whether the eye of a needle refers to a literal needles eye a small hole for thread to pass through or if this is referring to a gate that was often found withing the walls of a city that was just small enough for a single person to pass through but too small for anyone wishing to invade or infiltrate the city to use
Either way we have a visual image of something impossible trying to take place
we would be tempted after this verse to think its entirely impossible for a wealthy person to be saved

Those who heard this asked, “Then who can be saved?”

27 He replied, “What is impossible with man is possible with God

Who can be saved?
The cultural image of a wealthy person was to be one blessed by God
there was only lower class and upper class and most wealth was inherited or given to those in high position
So how can we be saved if even those favored by God struggle?
Only through the work of God and God alone can anyone follow faithfully after him

Then Peter said, “Look, we have left what we had and followed you

Lord we have made the sacrifice we have given our all

So he said to them, “Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left a house, wife or brothers or sisters, parents or children because of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times more at this time, and eternal life in the age to come.
