One of the really cool things about preaching through Romans is that you get to highlight the Roman Road
Which is a tool used to present the Gospel to the world
Church because we have experienced the saving Grace, Mercy of Christ
Paul almost puts it that he is compelled to share what he has experienced about Christ with the world
I believe we are commanded and church dare I say it but because of Christ we should be just as compelled to share the Gospel with the world
This morning we begin Romans 5.
Thus far it has been Paul letting the Jews in Rome have it for basing their so called salvation on their legacy, their following of the law
and the fact that they are sons of Abraham
I am so excited because within Romans 5. is Romans 5:8, my favorite verse
Maybe your Bible has a heading or title
Mine Says at the beginning of Romans 5.
Results of Justification
You and I are justified by our faith in Christ just like Abraham was
Romans 4:22–25 NASB95
22 Therefore it was also credited to him as righteousness. 23 Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, 24 but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25 He who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.
Because of his faith it was credited to him as righteous
It wasn’t because he was a good rule follow that he was justified but rather because of his own faith in God
And because of that we have an example of what it is to walk in faith with Christ
Not that we look to Abraham as god but we look to Abraham as a spiritual giant
As a brother in Christ, as a mature believer
Because of our own faith in Christ we are justified
And because we are justified there are results of being justified
Romans 5:1–2 NASB95
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.
Because of our faith in God we now have peace
Which would lead us to believe that before our faith in Christ we were at odds with Christ or we didn’t not have peace
Church how true is that
if you can think back to before you came to know Christ
You had or experienced an unsettling
No peace
There is a sign that has been on I-70 for over 20 years
No God No Peace
KNOW God KNOW Peace
Which is exactly what Paul is telling the Jews in Rome and telling us today
That for you to know peace is to know Jesus
Which requires that you have faith in God
again a result of having faith and being justified is to have peace
Peace that this world cannot understand or know because they don’t know Christ
And because of Christ’s Grace that we can come to know Him in faith
It is unmerited favor that we can stand here today
That is what Chapter was about having faith in God
And because of that faith we stand before God justified
Just As If I’d Never Sinned
Because of the grace of Christ we are justified
Then Paul says wait there are more results because of our faith in Christ
Romans 5:3–5 NASB95
3 And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
Paul highlights the sanctification process
The Justification is instant
When you repent of your sin and trust Jesus you are instantly justified and because you are justified
God then works to refine you
To create you into the original design
He would know since He is the designer
We know that when we go through difficulties it grows us
Although sometimes we find ourselves saying that we have enough character, enough perseverance
Paul also highlights when you go through what we call those difficulties or those difficult moments
The Holy Spirit is with us
To know that the God of the universe is with us during our darkest moments or most frustrating moments
is refreshing and I know for a fact that even as believers we need that reminder daily
To know the God of the universe who spoke things into existence
desires to be with us during those moments
Praise the Lord
And maybe you needed to hear that this morning
that God is with you as a believer
Paul continues with probably my favorite piece of scripture
Romans 5:6–8 NASB95
6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Paul comments
while you and I were still helpless
Meaning there was nothing we could do for ourselves to get salvation
Christ stepped in at the right moment in all of history
He died for the ungodly
In case you didn't know that is you and I
We were ungodly, some of you may still be ungodly this morning
Because you have not repented of your sin and trusted in Jesus
The gift of salvation is there if you would just accept it this morning
You can go from ungodly to heir with Christ only because of Christ dying for the ungodly
Then Paul shows how absolutely amazing that is by saying that someone would never die for the ungodly but for a perfect man perhaps
maybe someone would die
I got news for you
I would offer an organ for you
No way am I sacrificing my daughters for your salvation
That is exactly what Paul is saying
If you and I would probably never die for an ungodly
But God
That changes the entire narrative right
But God changes us from being hopeless with no hope for salvation
God stepped in and Christ died at the right time
But God shows us how much love for us that
while we were still ungodly
for those this morning who are not saved you need to know that God still loves you and loved you so much He still died for you
He died for all people
Their salvation is done all they have to do is to accept that free gift of Christ
While we were still on the losing side and still enemies of God
He said I love you this much
I love you so much I will offer my son in place of you
By doing that God gives us the opportunity to have a relationship with God
Only because of Christ
Then Paul introduces this idea
Romans 5:9–11 NASB95
9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from the wrath of God through Him. 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only this, but we also exult in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation.
Paul introduces this idea that Jesus’s death accomplished something and his resurrection also accomplished something
The idea that Jesus’ death defeated the problem of sin that everyone has to deal with
that by the blood of Christ we are not justified
Jesus defeated sin for us and because of His death we are free from sin
We have defeated sin and because of the blood of Christ
And we get excited about that
And we should
Paul starts this idea that Jesus’s death accomplished something and so did His resurrection
See His resurrection accomplished giving us life
Paul says this in Romans 6.
Romans 6:5–8 NASB95
5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin. 8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
See the results of being made right and justified with Christ are freedom from sin
Church because of Christ’s blood you stand before God free and pure and right and justified
Because of His resurrection you are not alive
Remember God didn’t die to pay your debt of sin and then leave you there
God raised Jesus from the grave to give you life church
Those are the effects of being justified with God
This morning is a much needed reminder of who we are and what we are because of Christ
And we will call the musicians up
This morning
Because of your personal relationship with Jesus this morning
You are justified
He dealt with the sin problem you had
He took your sin and dealt with it once and for all
This morning because of that faith you have you need to know you are justified
Because God loved you so much you are justified
meaning God looks at you right now just as if you’d never sinned
How amazing is that
This morning is some much needed truth for those of you here who do not have a personal relationship with Christ
You need to understand that God loved you so much even when and while you were and enemy of God
You need to hear this morning that God loved you so much while you were still at your worst
And because of that love this morning you can come to Christ and repent from your sin and accept what He has done for you
You can be saved this morning because of Jesus’ death and resurrection
In just a minute we will stand and sing a song
It is during that time that you are welcome and encouraged to respond to the Holy Spirit moving
Maybe you need to spend sometime in prayer at the altar
Maybe it is talking with someone about salvation down at the front
The altar is open
