Scripture Reading - Psalm 71:19-23
Psalm 71:19–23 (CSB)
19 Your righteousness reaches the heights, God, you who have done great things; God, who is like you?
20 You caused me to experience many troubles and misfortunes, but you will revive me again. You will bring me up again, even from the depths of the earth.
21 You will increase my honor and comfort me once again.
22 Therefore, I will praise you with a harp for your faithfulness, my God; I will sing to you with a lyre, Holy One of Israel.
23 My lips will shout for joy when I sing praise to you because you have redeemed me.

Message - Our Hope
On my last visit with Betty in her home
we talked about her restless legs and inability to sleep
said kind of tongue and cheek - if you spent any time with Betty for the last while she always talked of her restless legs and lack of sleep.
this allowed us to speak about her faith in God
that we do not always understand when and why God does things
but through our faith, we have a hope that others do not have
1 Thessalonians 4:13–18 (CSB)
13 We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.
14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, in the same way, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
15 For we say this to you by a word from the Lord: We who are still alive at the Lord’s coming will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep.
16 For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the archangel’s voice, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then we who are still alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.
18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.
Christian Grieving
Why the Thessalonians were grieving
False teaching concerning those who had passed away prior to the Lord’s return
False teaching that the Lord had already returned and that they had missed it
because of both of these false teachings the Thessalonians were grieving deeply at the loss of their loved ones, thinking they would truly never see them again
the loss of a loved one is painful, we should not run from that
but we do not grieve as those who have no hope
no hope of peace in death,
no hope of life with christ
no hope of reunion with our loved ones who are in Christ
that is a serious time of grief and heart ache
but for us, those of us who know Jesus Christ, we feel the pain and loss of Betty now, but with a joy and a hope of seeing her again in the presence of God
a life where there will be no more pain, no more tears or heart break
not because we have suffered enough, but because we will be with God as his people and He will be our God
Belief in the resurrected Jesus
Christ being raised means that Christ had to die
he died for your sins, for mine, and for Betty’s
Betty believed this - so sweet, in visiting with her, not always knowing his plan, she knew that he loved her
those that have gone before us will be raised
their salvation is based on the same Christ
Hope in a reunion
this is not the end for Betty or us with her
death can feel so final… and it is in this world
but we will all meet together
this is exciting… we will get to see Betty again, united with our fellow believers in Christ
I look forward to that day, when we can see her no longer struggling with her restless legs, able to fully rest
Hope in being with our Lord
the greatest comfort is not just that we will see one another, but that we will see the Lord himself
the greek word (apantesis) is often used of an important dignitary’s reception by the inhabitants of a city, who come out to greet and welcome their honored guest
this is what makes heaven, heaven… not a wish list that will one day be fulfilled for us.
we will get to be with the Lord!
this means when we meet again, and we see Christ, it will be a time of celebration and joy.
this is why death is not something to be feared by the believer
those that are in Christ know that this is not something that fear, but long for the day when we will be with him
That is why, one a day like this, we can celebrate
celebrate that Betty has gone on to be with the Lord,
IF! That is the key word in the text
We believe that Jesus lived a sinless life
think about that for a second - the Bible teaches that Jesus had numerous brothers and sisters
I have a couple of sisters and as much as I would say that I am the perfect brother, I would guess that they would not agree
and I must admit, there have been sinful acts and thoughts that I have had concerning my sisters
never once did he do anything to them in reaction that would be considered sinful
This sinless son of God died in our place
the punishment that we are owed for our sin, he took
in return gave us his righteousness
if we believe…
Romans 10:10 (CSB)
10 One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.
