Acts 4:5–20 (NASB 2020)
5 On the next day, their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together in Jerusalem; 6 and Annas the high priest was there, and Caiaphas, John, and Alexander, and all who were of high-priestly descent. 7 When they had placed them in the center, they began to inquire, “By what power, or in what name, have you done this?” 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers and elders of the people, 9 if we are on trial today for a benefit done to a sick man, as to how this man has been made well, 10 let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. 11 He is the Stone which was Rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief cornerstone. 12 And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.” 13 Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply. 15 But when they had ordered them to leave the Council, they began to confer with one another, 16 saying, “What are we to do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it. 17 But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let’s warn them not to speak any longer to any person in this name.” 18 And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, make your own judgment; 20 for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
The Problem With The Power
Produces controversy (Personal view)
Produces contention (Community)
Produces conflicts (Perspectives)
The Perspective Of Other Names
If I teach about…
Mohandas Ghandi I’m ok, I’m a spiritual, peaceful guy
Mother Teresa I’m ok, I’m a humanitarian
Nelson Mandela I’m ok because I’m a revolutionary activist
Martin Luther King Jr. I’m ok because I’m a Civil Rights crusader
Dalai Lama I’m ok because I teach non-violent libertarian methodologies
Karl Marx (Founder of Marxism) I’m ok because I am aware of the social conflicts
Christian Nationalism you’re ok because you have a theologically-infused political philosophy or Woke
Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi (BLM) you’re ok because you are a civil justice activist with cultural Marxism views. (Inclusion, Witchcraft, Acceptance, Affirming culture of LBGTQIA2+)
Jesus Christ as a good man, prophet and teacher you’re ok, because I can live anyway I choose and no accountability, be religious, go to church, do ministry, help the community. This makes me spiritual.
Matthew 15:8 (NASB 2020)
8This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far away from Me.
2 Timothy 3:5 (NASB 2020)
5 holding to a form of godliness although they have denied its power; avoid such people as these.
The world wants the church to be people centric and not problem centric. The problem is a huge one called “Sin”. Not tolerance, acceptance, inclusion, allies, woke or willful ignorance and silence towards sin will suffice. When the church becomes people centric and accommodates to the emotions, we become guilty and complicit to contributing to sending people to hell and experience the second death in the Lake of Fire.
The Perspective Of His Name
When you call on the name
Things change based on your relationship with Jesus Christ the Nazarene
When you understand the names power
The names power has the ability to transform your life
When you understand the names authority
The names authority has the right to govern your life and its outcome
When you yield to the power/authority
This yielding means you are willing to remain under the covering of the Lord God and find refuge
When you understand when we talk about Jesus as God people have a problem with him because it mandates acknowledging:
His power
His position
His authority
His omnipotence, Omniscience and omnipresence
His mandate for holiness (This means you must change
1 Peter 1:16 NASB 2020
16 because it is written: “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
The Proclamation Of His Name
Acts 4:19–20 NASB 2020
19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, make your own judgment; 20 for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
What God has done for you is worthy of our testimony
His substitutionary death for our sin debt.
Romans 5:10 NASB 2020
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.
His abundance of Grace toward us.
Ephesians 2:8–9 NASB 2020
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
His offering of eternal security
Acts 4:12 NASB 2020
12 And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.”
Ephesians 4:30 NASB 2020
30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
What God has shown us.
Through His word
2 Timothy 3:16 NASB 2020
16 All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness;
Through the testimony of the
saints
Hebrews 12:1–3 NASB 2020
1 Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking only at Jesus, the originator and perfecter of the faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Through the testimony of the angels
1 Peter 1:12 NASB 2020
12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look.
Though our personal experience
Romans 5:1–2 NASB 2020
1 Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we also have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we celebrate in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 8:9–11 NASB 2020
9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8:16–17 NASB 2020
16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
The Testimony of the world
Philippians 2:10–11 KJV 1900
10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
That is why with all the things that the word affirms, all the things that the saints have shared, with all the things that I know first hand, I understand why Peter and John said, “For we cannot stop speaking of what we have seen and heard.”
The Testimony of Jesus the Christ
Matthew 28:18 KJV 1900
18 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
When the name of Jesus Christ is at the forefront of the world, as long as His person, power and deity is never declared we can pack churches, have allies, and affirming communities that are in direct opposition to God’s word and authority in our sanctuaries.
At the name of Jesus, declared as God we have made ourselves public enemy number one! You are labeled as a bigot, a hate group, anti-affirming, anti-woke community. I declared over eight years ago that the church would be labeled as a hate group and now the church is targeted as such. Because we won’t agree with the world. Guess what? We are not in alliance or agreement with the world but the word of God.
Our responsibility is to not become a coward and never stand before a warring world that needs the truth of God’s word and we remain silent. Paul commands Timothy…
2 Timothy 4:1–2 NASB 2020
1 I solemnly exhort you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by His appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; correct, rebuke, and exhort, with great patience and instruction.
We are to do this when its popular, when its not; We are to correct and rebuke a nd xznot be afraid of men but with the power and aid of the Holy enabling us to move mightily in environment that are in direct opposition. We are a forward facing people who are to fight onward and move in the authority of Jesus under HIS direction and His covering.
Paul tells the church in Ephesus
Ephesians 6:10–13 NASB 2020
10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm.
In what power or in who’s name, will you do this?
is your response…
Acts 4:12,20
Acts 4:12 NASB 2020
12 And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.”
Acts 4:20 NASB 2020
20 for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard.”
or do we remain kingdom cowards and quiet…
Acts 4:19 NASB 2020
19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, make your own judgment;
