Open up with a verse from Proverbs. This is to prove that the Tongue was spoke about even before the new testament as it can cause good and evil.
proverbs 10:31 “The mouth of the godly person gives wise advice, but the tongue that deceives will be cut off.”
Proverbs 13:3 “Those who control their tongue will have a long life; opening your mouth can ruin everything.”
Proverbs 15:2 “The tongue of the wise makes knowledge appealing, but the mouth of a fool belches out foolishness.”
Proverbs 15:4 “Gentle words are a tree of life; a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit.”
Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.”
Proverbs 21:23 “Watch your tongue and keep your mouth shut, and you will stay out of trouble.”
As we see, the tongue of man can create good words or words that can lead to ones or others own demise.
In today’s message, we will discuss how the tongue can reflect us.
We always got something to say
Have you ever been to told to hold your tongue or becareful what you say. It is Often hard to somethings control what we say. It is like it just comes out. Before we know it, words have done damage. In turn, our words can cause change, enlightment, and positivity.
James 3:3–12 “We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches. But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? Does a fig tree produce olives, …”
Sinful speech includes but no limited to harsh words, unkind words, lying, exaggeration, false teaching, slander, gossiping, hateful comments, dirty jokes and selfish boasting.
As we mature in life and spiritually, we learn how to keep our tongues under control through the help of the Holy Spirit and taking captive every though to make it obident.
2. We can hide but our tongues know us.
Have you ever told someone that your doing well, but your words and expressions say otherwise. Do you randomly start talking with no control if a person or a topic is brought into a conversation. IT HAPPENS! Remember we are humans. Remember, we only human and we sin. Remember, though what goes in must come out of us rather it is good or bad. What/who interact with determines much of our mindset and actions. Its called PEER PRESSURE.
Matthew 15:11–20 “It’s not what goes into your mouth that defiles you; you are defiled by the words that come out of your mouth.” Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you realize you offended the Pharisees by what you just said?” Jesus replied, “Every plant not planted by my heavenly Father will be uprooted, so ignore them. They are blind guides leading the blind, and if one blind person guides another, they will both fall into a ditch.” Then Peter said to Jesus, “Explain to us the parable that says people aren’t defiled by what they eat.” “Don’t you understand yet?” Jesus asked. “Anything you eat passes through the stomach and then goes into the sewer. But the words you speak come from the heart—that’s what defiles you. For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. These are what defile you. Eating with unwashed hands will never defile you.””
As we constantly absorb the world the around us, it does dictate how we act, think, respond, and emotional stability. The more we consume, it will contol us.
2 Corinthians 10:5 “We destroy every proud obstacle that keeps people from knowing God. We capture their rebellious thoughts and teach them to obey Christ.”
Romans 7:2 “But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.”
Romans 7:23–25 “But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me. Oh, what a miserable person I am! Who will free me from this life that is dominated by sin and death? Thank God! The answer is in Jesus Christ our Lord. So you see how it is: In my mind I really want to obey God’s law, but because of my sinful nature I am a slave to sin.”
Romans 8:6 “So letting your sinful nature control your mind leads to death. But letting the Spirit control your mind leads to life and peace.”
Also know who you are telling things to, know their heart and who they are.
Matthew 7:16 “You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles?”
3. The tongue can be tamed
Jonah 3:9-10 “Who can tell? Perhaps even yet God will change his mind and hold back his fierce anger from destroying us.””
The mind and heart must be filled with what is pure and righteous
Matthew 22:37 “Jesus replied, “ ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’”
James 3:7–10 NLT
People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!
We can seek wisdom from our heavenly father:
James 3:17–18 NLT
But the wisdom from above is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds. It shows no favoritism and is always sincere. And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness.
More importantly, we constantly stay in prayer with our father:
Ephesians 6:18 “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.”
Reference Matthew 7:7 ““Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.”
Matthew 6:9–13 “Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us today the food we need, and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. And don’t let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.”
