Baptized in Service
Baptized in Service
14 Even so the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should live from the gospel.
15 But I have used none of these things, nor have I written these things that it should be done so to me; for it would be better for me to die than that anyone should make my boasting void.
Paul is saying a minister can receive money from preaching the gospel
That preacher should live from the gospel
But for Him, there are certain things that are simply for the satisfaction rather than pay
There are certain obligations that must be fulfilled with pay
It doesn’t mean we should work primarily for money
“They should regard work not as a career of accumulation but as an opportunity of service” -William Barclay
What happened to that?
Companies used to want to provide a service or a quality product that they could be proud of
Then to make a more money on the dollar they ruin entire economies and towns
What happened to just serving to serve
We should keep teaching that
You don’t need to be paid for everything
Especially as Christians we must not always look at how this benefits us but how we can benefit others
Paul calls this a privilege
It’s our privilege to serve the kingdom
There’s greatness in serving:
Our leadership standard for this week is Servants
The way we lead is through serving
21 And He said to her, “What do you wish?”
She said to Him, “Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, one on Your right hand and the other on the left, in Your kingdom.”
The mother of James and John was worshiping Jesus
It was in order to get something from Him
How much more must it bless the Lord when people worship Him with pure hearts without wanting something in return
Paul and Silas
Paul and Silas knew that, they weren’t just praising God so they could get out of jail.
When the earthquake came and freed them, they didn’t leave.
They were actually praising God for the simple reason that they loved Him.
It was so pure that it arrested the other prisoners’ attention, and they didn’t flee when they were loosed.
This was powerful. This is what true praise can do.
Grant that these two sons of mine may sit, on on Your right hand and the other on the left in Your Kingdom
I’ll worship you with the intention of asking a favor of you
Worship is spiritual warfare
And it is an act of faith
But it should come out of a pure place for who he is
Not what he can do for you
22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”
They said to Him, “We are able.”
You don’t know what you’re asking
You don’t know what it’s going to cost you in the end
Just like James and John, we often don’t really understand what we are asking for.
It is much better for us to just hold on to the Lord, follow Him,
and trust that together, we can be victorious in whatever comes our way
Instead of trying to force our will upon HIs
Nevertheless, not my will but yours be done
Drink the Cup:
The Greek word for “cup,” POTERION, denotes primarily a “drinking-vessel”
This phrase is frequently used in the New Testament for the sufferings of Christ
Let this cup pass from me
Jesus applied this figure to Himself (see note 6 at Luke 12:50), for He was to voluntarily suffer drinking the cup of God’s judgment for our sins
Notice Servants leaders lead from the Front
They don’t wait for others to go in
1 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. 2 But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. 3 To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. 4 And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. 5 Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.” 6 Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.
Servant leaders lead by example
Servant leaders make sure it’s safe for others
They lead into the trouble not the other way around
Pastor had his wife call
WE don’t require things out of people that we don’t require out of ourselves
The Pharisees:
Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them
This was a foreign concept to the Pharisees, the only reason most of them were what they were was because of influence
If you’re getting into ministry for influence and followers, it’s not a good idea
Pray for the heart of a Shepard first
Shepards not slave drivers
22 But Jesus answered and said, “You do not know what you ask. Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?”
They said to Him, “We are able.”
23 So He said to them, “You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with; but to sit on My right hand and on My left is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it is prepared by My Father.”
Are you willing to put up with the shame and the
What are you willing to sacrifice to get there
I wonder if Jesus saw right then and there the deaths of these two men
James and John would share His sufferings even to the point of death but not in a redemptive sense.
James was the first apostle to be martyred (Acts 12:2)
John endured many years of persecution and exile
Maybe the worst persecution he could’ve faced
“You will indeed drink My cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with”
James and John sought a position of honor and authority next to Jesus,
But instead they were granted positions of suffering
Do we want to be baptized?:
The word Baptism was never used a religious term till the early church
Baptism is Bap-tid-zo:
to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk)
to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one's self, bathe
to overwhelm
Used in a few different instances:
Dipping bread in oil- change the taste
Dying cloth- Change the look
Sinking Ship - You were in the water, now it’s in you
Do you want to be overwhelmed by Him?
Nothing about on you, about you or in you can look the same
It was pride that caused James and John to seek their own exaltation,
and it was pride that caused the other disciples to be upset over this
25 But Jesus called them to Himself and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who are great exercise authority over them. 26 Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. 27 And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
God’s kingdom operates opposite of this world’s system.
Carnal rulers lord it over the people they lead or rule.
But in God’s kingdom, the great have the attitude of a servant
This English word “minister” comes from the Greek word “DIAKONOS,” which is the word we get “deacon” from.
It means to be a waiter. If we truly want to be great in God’s kingdom, we have to serve others.
Paul is Saying in:
17 For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been entrusted with a stewardship. 18 What is my reward then? That when I preach the gospel, I may present the gospel of Christ without charge, that I may not abuse my authority in the gospel.
19 For though I am free from all men, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win the more; 20 and to the Jews I became as a Jew, that I might win Jews; to those who are under the law, as under the law, that I might win those who are under the law; 21 to those who are without law, as without law (not being without law toward God, but under law toward Christ), that I might win those who are without law; 22 to the weak I became as weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.
He didn’t Lord over them He served them.
His method of ministry was not hypocritically one thing to one person and another to another
It was a matter of understanding and getting along with someone
If our first mission is to prove the other wrong, not much ministering is going to happen beyond that
Paul understood people where they were at
James Boswell speaks of “the art of accommodating oneself to others”
Being genuinely interested in people
Actually caring and having a heart for the lost
“Someone once described teaching, medicine and the ministry as the three patronizing professions. As long as we patronize people and make no effort to understand them we can never get anywhere with them.” William Barclay
“Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
