Luke 23:13-27, 32-53
We have been talking about the suffering of Christ, we know that as gruesome as the cross was that no man took the life of Christ...
No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
We read the passage in Luke because in connection with Isaiah 53, we see very clearly parting of our Lord.
We understand that in order for His soul to be made an offering for sin, and for it not to be left in hell, that it had to be separated from His flesh. We saw that through the sin offering in Leviticus, how that the fat, and the gaul was burned on the altar, while the flesh was taken to a clean place. The Bible definition for death is giving up the ghost, it is that moment when the soul and spirit leave the physical body and stand alone as the spiritual body of a person.
And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin.
And he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried unto the Lord, and said, O Lord my God, I pray thee, let this child’s soul come into him again. And the Lord heard the voice of Elijah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived.
Death biblically, is not a termination but a separation as we continue to exist after death, just not in our physical form.
For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day.
Luke 16:19-31
vs. 22 Angels carried Lazarus to Abraham’s bosom.
This is the place that Jesus refers to as “paradise in Lk. 23:43. and “the heart of the earth” in Mt. 12:40.
We see very clearly that the separation of the body and soul is not the removal of feeling, or understanding, memory, or sympathy.
(vs. 22-23)
Notice that the Bible doesn’t say anything about a being coming to take him anywhere, just that he was buried, and no angel involved. We then see him in hell, notice he has eyes, (he can see) he has a tongue (he can talk) and he is thirsty. He recognizes Lazarus and he knows who Abraham is.
We see that he has a detailed memory of his life on earth (25,27-28) He is even concerned about his family still in the land of the living…
Now of Jesus…
The way of life is above to the wise,
That he may depart from hell beneath.
For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell;
Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
How long was he there?
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.
The end of the Jewish day was the 12th hour, meaning that before the end of the day, Jesus’ soul stood with the thief in paradise. His spirit He commended to the Father, His body was in the grave, His soul was made an offering for sin...
And he made his grave with the wicked,
And with the rich in his death;
Because he had done no violence,
Neither was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief:
When thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin,
He shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.
He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied:
By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many;
For he shall bear their iniquities.
When God was satisfied with the travail of His soul...
