What do I believe God wants us to know? We are to forgive
Why? It brings freedom to us and them
What do I believe God wants us to do? We are to forgive as He forgives us
Why? It brings freedom to us and them
ME/WE
There are certain things in life that God calls and encourages us to HOLD ONTO
We are called and encouraged to HOLD EACH OTHER UP. IN PRAYER AND HELP THEM STAY UP GAL 6 A
We are called to HOLD onto to Jesus and the beautiful thing about GOD OUR FATHER if we lose grip HE never does
HOLD UP THE WORD OF GOD
MARRIAGE VOW “to have and to hold”
There are certain things God calls us not to HOLD ONTO…THIS THING YOU ARE HOLDING ONTO IS NOT NOT NOT GOOD FOR YOU.
ONE OF THOSE IS ANGER….not righteous anger…anger that fights against injustice and fights for love and life.
Ephesians 4:26 ESV
Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
DO NOT HOLD ONTO ANGER
NONE OF US HAVE EVER HELD ONTO ANGER IN THIS ROOM, RIGHT?
No one has been angry at someone (grudge, bitter)
Nobody in this room has been angry at boss or fellow employee
Nobody in this room has not been angry because your day or life has not gone has planned, right
Nobody in this room has been angry AT YOURSELF for not being or doing what you know you should do
Last, one…I have heard this has happened to parents…you have become not righteously angry that your kids do not listen or obey you
BUT WHY? WHY SHOULDN’T WE HOLD ONTO ANGER? WHAT IS THE BIG DEAL?
3 THINGS
It does not resolve the issue, it often makes it worse.
Jesus never says alright how you resolve anger is by getting ANGRIER…
Anybody get offended by someonone and say How has the worked with your spouse or kids
You think ANGER resovle and what happens they get angrier than you and then you get angrier than them….ANYBODY???
Some will say I got unrighteously angry and I got what I wanted…I got my kids to obey…but it broke the 4th commandment you took the name of the LORD in vain… we hurt them ungodly in the process
Lastly on this point. I like what Augustine says, “Anger is like drinking poison hoping the other person will die.”
- What makes it worse…
Sometimes the person you are angry at doesn’t know you are angry….in fact they are happy and having fun…they have no clue and their no clue makes you ANGRY
ANYBODY???
2. Anger is bad for our physical health
And see this in the medical field….ANGER IS MORE DAMAGING TO THE BODY THAN anxiety, depression, and stress
Look what Proverbs says
Proverbs 14:30 ESV
A tranquil heart gives life to the flesh, but envy makes the bones rot.
What happens when we get angry medically speaking is our brains starts to shut down or turn off and FLESHLY HEART TAKES OVER
Everybody ever witness someone who is angry and they just should a little crazy?
3. Why we shouldn’t hold onto unrighteous anger
JESUS CALLS IT MURDER IN THE HEART
Matthew 5:21–26 ESV
“You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny.
Jesus says this because WE ARE HIS CHILDREN and we are to live like HIM
He says this because we are to be know by His love
He says for our own GOOD…anger is no good
HOW DO WE STOP BEING ANGRY
By growing in love for God and others
HOW DO WE GET THEIR: BY LOVING GOD AND LOVING OTHERS
Matthew 22:34–38 ESV
But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment.
GODLY LOVE AND GODLY ANGER ARE NOT ON OPPOSITE TEAMS
UNGODLY LOVE (LOVE OF IDOLS, LOVE OF SIN) AND UNGODLY ANGER ARE ON THE SAME TEAM
That we are like Mary spending time with love and by being with love we become more loving
Love neighbor as ourselves
Let’s help bring this to practicality
Have you ever offended or hurt someone unintentioally or intentiaonlly? Have them a human reason to be angry.
- what do we want from them?
Grace and love
Here is the conundrum for us GRACE and love is what we want we mess up BUT SOMETIMES IT IS NOT AS EASY TO GIVE IT AWAY
HOW DO WE GROW IN OUR LOVE FOR GOD AND OTHERS ?
There isa practice that will help us with this
SLOWWWWWW DOWNNNNN….this is what MARY DOES WITH JESUS
SLOWING DOWN WILL HELP US KEEP OUR BREAST PIECE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS ON
HOW DO WE PUT THE BREAST PIECE OF RIGHTOUSNESS ON?
SLOW DOWN
JIM WILDER WROTE A BOOK CALLED ENEMY MODE
WHAT HE POINTS OUT IS OFTEN WE GET IN ENEMY MODE BECAUSE WE ARE TOO BUSY
LINES AND TRAFFIC CAUSE US TO GET INTO ENEMY MODE
We are angry and lash out because our spouse interupted us in our work
We get angry because someone wants to talk to us and we just want to go home or watch the BROWNS
DALLAS WILLARD SAYS RENTLESSLY ELIMATE HURRY
THEN JAMES
James 1:19 ESV
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger;
WHEN WE SLOW DOWN IT AND ARE WITH LOVE IT GIVES US TIME TO LOVE
The reason I say slow down is because slowing down gives time for you heart to listen.
HOW WE PUT THE BREAST PIECE ON AND HOW WE KEEP IT ON
NOW WHAT DO WE DO IF WE ARE ANGRY…..THE ARROW GOT IN?
WHAT IS THE THING WE MUST DO TO BE HEALED?
Matthew 18:21 ESV
Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?”
ANYBODY WONDER THIS QUESTION?
The Jewish rabbis at the time taught that forgiving someone more than three times was unnecessary, citing Amos 1:3-13 where God forgave Israel’s enemies three times, then punished them
Matthew 18:22–35 ESV
Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times. “Therefore the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his servants. When he began to settle, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents. And since he could not pay, his master ordered him to be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and payment to be made. So the servant fell on his knees, imploring him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ And out of pity for him, the master of that servant released him and forgave him the debt. But when that same servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii, and seizing him, he began to choke him, saying, ‘Pay what you owe.’ So his fellow servant fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ He refused and went and put him in prison until he should pay the debt. When his fellow servants saw what had taken place, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their master all that had taken place. Then his master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. And should not you have had mercy on your fellow servant, as I had mercy on you?’ And in anger his master delivered him to the jailers, until he should pay all his debt. So also my heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.”
UNLIMITED AMOUNT
TALENT WAS 15 YEARS WAGES: $500,000-$1,000,000

Hence, “ten thousand talents” hyperbolically represents an incalculable debt—in today’s terms, about $6 billion.

WHO PAID THE DEBT NOW? THE MASTER
$15,000
YES, THEY DON’T DESERVE IT, BUT NEITHER DO WE

JESUS DOES NOT TREAT US AS OUR SINS DESERVE
