son of promise
son of promise
Intro
Who has someone in their life that they believed they could do anything...
you thought they were able to beat up anyone, get anything done...
and then you realized their human limitations.
they were still impresive but they couldnt slam dunk on a 10 foot rim.
Sometimes we come to Jesus and we believe He is able to do anything.
and then we start to forget that God is able to do anything.
depending on how things shake out in our life we
can start to think
A. that God is not abel to help me
B. That He is unfair
in todays passage we are going to address both questions.
verse 1-5
teach---
Lord appeared to Him , heat of the day, by front door tent
Q. Who do you think these 3 men are?
abraham bows before them, my Lord
aknowledges their superriority
offers hospitality
read verse 6-8
instead of a morsel of bread
abraham prepares them a feast
as they rest in the shade and eat
read verse 9-10
What do we observe.
the leader of these 3 give the promise to abraham that God had given in the previous chapter.
What can we conclude about this passage as to who the leader of these 3 men are?
Pre incarnate Jesus
God has confirmed his promise about providing a son through sarah
as sarah is listening behind the door.
we see how she is going to react.
read verse 11-13
Sarah overhears and laughs to herself
as if to say within,, yea right,
I dont believe that for a minute..
They are well past the age of reproduction
and it is not humanly possible.
it would take a miricale:
Do you believe in miricales?
definition: an event that can not be explained by natural or scientific laws.
you must believe in miricales to be a christian.
can creation be explained by natural and scientific laws,
no.
therefore it is a miricale.
Noahs ark
moses parting the red sea
raising of lazarus
raising of Jesus from the dead
etc.
our faith hangs on a God who does Miricales.
So we see Sarah make a mistake here.
She thought that God was like man.
She thought of Him in human terms
explain: God is the controler and govener of all things in this world’
He has created it
and has power over everything in it.
But our God is in heaven; He does whatever He pleases.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the Lord.
of Jesus
who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
God is upholding the universe and everything in it
He is way bigger and more powerful than you can think
Now we see Gods reply to Sarah laughing at Him:
read 14-15
underline verse 14
God responds. Is anything to hard for the Lord?
rhetorical question here.... of course not.
Do you believe that in your life
Our first application point is
God is able to do anything in your life
God is able to do anything in your life
You need to believe that God is able to do anything in your life
some of us have mountains in our life
What is it that you are facing that seems impossible for God to do.
You need to know that he is able to do all things.
Q. Does this mean that he will do all things you ask Him.
no.
we want to make a distinction.
A. He will 100% do what he says he will in His word.
B. He is able to do and move in any way that you ask Him
but he wont always do what you want Him to do
the things in your life may not work out the way you want them to.
God promised a son through Sarah… It didnt happen the way they wanted.
lets look at this verse
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
What are your all things today?
is it depression, anger, anxiety, trials, joys, success, failures, adventures...
life has ups and downs …
Do you believe that He is able to work it together for your good.
We can start to doubt God when we dont see the results we want in life...
Story - Ava
God was able to heal her, but he didnt
I dont know why, but I have faith HE is going to work it for our good.
It is all about His plan, and His timing
God is able to deliver from drug addiction
from abuse
from sickness and disease
most of all He is able to deliver us from sin and death!!
Sarah didnt believe that God would give her a Son
because she thought that God was not able to do it,
yet we see from scripture that God is able to do all things
including forgive your sin and raise you up to eternal life with HIm.
read verse 16-19
we see the confermation of the promise again
I will make him a great nation.
with the condition
keep my ways , do righteousness and Justice
read verse 20-21
The thing God is going to do is destroy sodom and gomorah
for exceeding wickedness.
read 22-25
Underline verse 25
Will not the judge of all the earth do what is right.
We see God is the judge of the earth.
He will judge all people for how they lived.
God is going to destroy Sodom and Gomorah
the city where Lot has ventured to
And this is why Abraham may have been sooo concerned...
Abraham poses the question.
How cold you slay the righteous people with the wicked people.
He says , you would never do something unjust...
Here we need to make a point...
There is no righteous people on earth....
There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one.”
all have sinned and are unrighteous before God
even in this I think abraham is getting at
the fact that there must be some in the city who are not completely depraved
He states please spare the righteous ones
Q. do you ever feel like God is not fair.
Who determines what fair is. Him
If God removed everything that was evil then he would need to remove you because of your sin
but in His patience he endures our sin and sends us His son to purchase forgivness..
Our next point is
God will always do what is right.
God will always do what is right.
This speaks to Gods justice.
He is a just God meaning that He does what is right.
This is why he sent His son to the cross.
Q. Would God be just if he let people into heaven with their sin?
no ..
would a judge be just if he let a bank robber go free without paying for his crimes..
this is the point Jesus pays the penalty for your crimes against our holy God.
Even in forgiving us He is just and does what is right.
When you see injustice… It will not go unpunished..
and when you sin
let it be known that Jesus endured the wrath that was meant for you
Q. Did you know that Jesus went to the cross because of your sin.
your sin put him there
let that sink in next time you decide to rebel against God,
it should lead you into repentance.
When we view God in the right frame of mind
we see his love magnafied for us
we see His love in that He is willing to relent his anger against sodom and gomorrah if there are any who are righteous...
Read 25-32
We see here abraham and God have a discourse.
Abrahams heart is for the people in the city
in the same way our heart should be for the people in our city.
God is very patient and gracious to go down in the number of righteous people required to save the sodom and gomorah
we need to see through the eyes of scripture to understand
God is able to do anything that he wants...’
he is the God of miricales
we also need to see through the lens of scripture that
God will always do what is right. ‘
he is a righteous judge
this means at the end of the day He can be trusted
and
he is worthy of our worship
