CONTEXT In the context preceding Mark 16

Jesus has endured the misery and humiliation of being beaten by the Roman Cohort (Mk 15:16-21)

Jesus was crucified, mocked by the scribes and chief priest and criminals (Mk 15.22-32)

Jesus was cursed of God until death (Mk 15:33-39) and buried (v40-47)‌

TEXT ANALYSIS

I. Jesus is Risen from the Dead (v1-8)

Mark 16:1–8 | 1 And when the Sabbath passed, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices, so that they might come and anoint Him. 2 And very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 And they were saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb?” 4 And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away, although it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, wearing a white robe; and they were amazed. 6 And he said to them, “Do not be amazed; you are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who has been crucified. He has risen; He is not here; behold, the place where they laid Him. 7 “But go, tell His disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see Him, just as He told you.’” 8 And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment were gripping them; and they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid.

Takeaway: The first witnesses are not what would have been considered credible.

If they will not share the good news will we?

Deuteronomy 19:15““A single witness shall not rise up against a man on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has committed; at the mouth of two or three witnesses a matter shall be established.”

What does this text say about God (Father, Son, Spirit)

v19 Jesus is sitting at the right hand of God - the place of honor, power and authority

II. The Testimony Rejected (v9-13)

Mark 16:9–13 | 9 [Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. 10 She went and reported to those who had been with Him, while they were mourning and crying. 11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they refused to believe it. 12 After that, He appeared in a different form to two of them while they were walking along on their way to the countryside. 13 And they went away and reported it to the others, but they did not believe them either.

Takeaway: Seeing isn’t believing. Be that as it may a testimony is expected even if the audience will not believe

John 20:29“Jesus said to him, “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are those who did not see, and yet believed.””

III. The Great Commission (v14-18)

Mark 16:14–18 | 14 Afterward He appeared to the eleven themselves as they were reclining at the table; and He reproached them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. 16 “He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. 17 “And these signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak with new tongues; 18 and they will pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly poison, it will not hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Takeaway: Jesus looks down/reproaches those who reject the believer’s testimony

Luke 12:12“for the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.””

IV. The Ascension to the Right Hand of the Father (v19-20 )

Mark 16:19–20 | 19 So then, the Lord Jesus, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them, and confirmed the word by the signs that followed.] [And they promptly reported all these instructions to Peter and his companions. And after that, Jesus Himself sent out through them from east to west the sacred and imperishable preaching of eternal salvation.]

Takeaway: Because of the authority of Christ we have been sent.

Matthew 28:18“And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”
